I know it annoys us all. But Ebay has been doing this for years. And no you can't stop them. They own the site, they have every right to do that.

eBay doesn't care if sellers get any return on this, just that we pay.

·11 months agoI would venture to say that you are well positioned to deal with that competition.
I checked a few of your listings and on some, your price is more aggressive than your competitor's ad. On others none of the sponsored ads is the identical product and is likely to be purchased by a buyer who found your listing with the product you are offering in mind.
More often than not, the sponsored listings are not direct competition to my item. But that is because of my merchandise selection. Seems to be the case for many of your listings. Merchandise selection is one of the best tools in our toolboxes.

·11 months agoJust because it was added to the user agreement doesn't mean its still not **bleep**. Paying for store space and then the landlord putting up advertisements to a direct competitor inside your store that you pay for is pretty shady.

·11 months agoIf that was all eBay did, I would say it's only as shady as what all the other landlords do.
............. but at least all the other landlords aren't complete idiots about it. -Their ads for other items are entirely down-page, beneath all the details of the item currently opened for viewing. On eBay they're all mixed in between the various parts of a seller's listing, making it a ridiculous mess and very difficult for the buyer to find all the info they may want or need about the item.

·11 months agoI don't buy or sell on any of those sites so its news to me. Explains why ebay does it. If I am renting store space whether it be brick and mortar or virtual I should have the right to refuse advertisements in my store space that directly competes with what I am selling in my own store. I cannot advertise another competitor to ebay on this site nor can I even advertise my own site (if I had one) in my own store on ebay. Sooner or later the craziness needs to be reeled in.
The other day on my laptop I logged on ebay and went to scroll down to go to the community boards and it just kept loading ads every time I scrolled down. Never got it to stop loading ads long enough to click the ebay community link.

·11 months agoThe only reason the selling platforms would ever stop doing it would be if it stops working. You're not going to like this, but I myself sometimes find it easier to find what I'm looking for in the "other listings" on a listing than in the raw search results.

·11 months agoI agree. I don't think the main info (picture, price) and item description should be split.
There is a potential buyer looking at my listing, yet ebay tries to actively steer the buyer to other ebay listings.
I fail to see how this is helpful to me or even ebay for that matter.

·11 months agoI doubt that was her intent of the post. It isn't shady. Ebay is up front about this and because someone decides not to read the User Agreement doesn't then make it Ebay's fault. They are doing exactly what they say they are going to do.
IDK any sellers that like this. But it isn't going anywhere.

·11 months agoSure it does. Shady implies they are trying to hide something or do something underhanded when they are not. The fees on Ebay aren't the highest in this industry nor are they the cheapest. But they are calculated like many other sites do. Facts are facts whether we like them or not.

·11 months agoI don't believe the word shady necessarily means what you think it does. You can be upfront with your shadiness and still be shady. They don't have to hide what they are doing because they are in a position of power. The act of putting other competitors ads in a store I pay for is in fact shady.

·11 months agoIt's rampant, though, and eBay's program is by no means the worst. At least here there's choice. As far as I know, on Etsy there is NO choice if you gross over $10k/year, and it's not hard to do that. Poshmark has a voluntary system (like here) but it's very pricey. Mercari has something, too, but I haven't explored it.

·11 months agoDon't forget that this landlord also comes looking for handouts (tips?) when you get paid for shipping your items. He wants his cut for the money you are paid to mail items. While you are packing & traveling to get your orders out, he is sitting in front of his TV - waiting to add to his pockets. lol

·11 months agoThe landlord analogy was kind of thin to begin with, but "tips" is really stretching it. Is that supposed to be seller fees? Wouldn't that be more like paying our rent?

·11 months agoSellers' fees are legitimate. Taking a portion of the shipping cost is not. If someone pays me $20 for postage, why should eBay get over $2.50 if it? "It's how they do business" is horsebleep. I will NEVER change my view on that.

·11 months agoIt is a normal thing for marketplaces to do. Ebay is not the only one. Sellers need to consider ALL their costs when developing their pricing. It doesn't matter what your viewpoint is, it is simply a fact that you have to deal with. Not wanting to only hurts you, not Ebay.

·11 months agoWell how would do it? I'm sincerely asking you, if you ran eBay and didn't want to charge FVF's on shipping, how would you stop millions of sellers shifting their item prices into shipping prices, to pay less in FVF's?
This coin I sold last night for example.
$19 + $4.66 shipping. If eBay didn't charge fees on shipping, I could have priced it $1 + 22.66 -the buyer would have paid the same amount, but you (eBay) would get your fees from only that $1.00.
And that's EXACTLY WHAT SELLERS WERE DOING before fees started getting applied to shipping as well.
So then, how would you solve that problem?

·11 months agoWhat ebay should have done is punish the small percentage of sellers who were obviously abusing the system. Instead, what they did was take advantage of the situation and use it as a convenient way to increase profits by punishing everyone. From a business perspective and not caring about your seller's its smart.

·11 months ago@agnesandjo Nope. We're all stuck with endless other advertising on our listings - they're even cramming in store names above our listings for things similar to what we're trying to sell.
There's a chance that your listings will show up in someone else's listing ranging from infinitesimal to maybe once in a while, depending on what you're selling.

·11 months agoNot necessarily. Most of the thumbnail modules are promoted (AKA "Sponsored") listings.
But the 'You may also like' one includes non-sponsored listings (note the lack of that word underneath). These are chosen purely by similarity to the currently-open listing.
