I have a very hard to find OEM muscle car part listed for a pretty high price with make a offer enabled.
In the listing I mention that I have had the item sitting on a shelf for 40+ years.
Potential buyer is upset that I would be asking so much for a part that they are correct in thinking that I got really cheap in the 1980s and proceeds with a long winded rant.
I check and there are 2 other listings for this item, one listed for $700 more and one $1,800 more than mine, I wonder if they also got the rant.

This failing upwards thing is OK with me.

·4 months agoentitled people want things to be given them for free because they need to fix the car cheap so then they can flip the car for 60% over market value. scammers always scam, that's their entire ethos.

·4 months agoThis is just a variation on a theme.
There are a relatively small number of negotiating styles.
Each style "variation" more or less fits snugly into one of these negotiating styles.
This is the classic "insult" negotiator.
This type of haggler tears down/insults/maligns/devalues an item they greatly desire in an attempt to will the owner of the property to divest of it as cheaply as possible. Bullying.
An "insult" negotiator is not uncommon. I find it particularly off-putting, but it is not a rarity.
IMHO, merely say something to the effect of;
" Thank you so very much for your interest in my item. I appreciate your feedback. Have a nice day."
Block, lock & roll.
Best of luck with shop & sales

·4 months agoHonestly, after acting like that these people wonder why they can't get a 'deal' - well, duh.

·4 months agoI think some people just can’t resist trying to talk someone into bargaining with them.
Five years ago, after my house burned down, I was looking for a new piano. On FBM, I found an awesome baby grand for an awesome price. The poor seller told me that everyone except me had tried to talk her way down on the price. I told her that her price was extremely reasonable, no way was I going to try to talk her down. She said I was the only one willing to pay her full price. (It was a 1914 Cable Co. baby grand in fantastic condition for $900). The others missed out, and I grabbed a gem!

Not quite the same thing but I once got one of these numpties who messaged me because she wanted an item I was selling which was an advertising piece that was about 40-50 years old and had originally been a promotional giveaway. This lady said I should give her the item for free because it wasn't right for me to sell an item that was a free giveaway to begin with.
I don't know if these people are just stupid or if they are hoping we are. They don't even deserve a reply.

·4 months agoI kinda wanna see that, sure could use a laugh today. Can you just copy-paste the message minus the buyer's name, @bashort ?

OP4 months agoOne thing is this person is comparing a 460 ford truck manifold to a set of 428 Mustang Cobra Jet cast iron manifolds
Wow so you have had them on a shelf for 40 years? How much money do have in them? I 1986 a used set of manifolds might of cost 20 dollars? 🤔 Come on are you seriously asking 1100 for a used set of stock manifolds? I'm a small business owner too and I understand we all gotta make some money but dang do you really wanna do it by gouging the hell out of someone. I know I've probably irritated you by now and I'm sorry that isn't my Intent but I'm genuinely curious as to where you came up with this number as I've seen new old stock manifolds for the 460 go for under 100 on ebay granted that's for one side but still 200 versus 1100 for used? Is this something ultra rare like your last remaining individual that has used manifolds to offer

Wowzer. Oh, yeah... you're definitely dealing with a blocked buyer. 👎

·4 months ago@bashort I would say "No but mine are the cheapest" -and show him those 2 higher listings.

I'd argue that you just got a lecture from a blocked buyer. 😑

Tell him that when he sells his house, he should not dare to list it for more than what he paid in the 80s or before.

·4 months agoI once got one of those too. The item later sold in auction for more than the starting price. Another buyer " warned" me they would report the listing to eBay for over pricing.

·4 months agoSadly, eBay is not for sellers. They destroy sellers with their fees. There is no way to make profit on here, which is why a lot of people are leaving eBay. In fact, ive pulled 90% of my products off here. As a comic book seller, Shortboxed is so much better.

·4 months agoMore arrive than leave.
Most Ebay buyers are unlikely to have heard of shortcake which you say is better.
Paying fees to sell a lot of low cost items leaves no profit, which is why many sellers don't bother to try to sell them.

·4 months agoI make 100 percent of my living on ebay and make more here than I ever did when I had a job with a regular paycheck.
I had never once even heard of the website you mentioned. However the fees are nearly identical. Shortboxed charges the seller 10 percent and the buyer 3 percent for a total of 13 percent. Ebay charges 13.25 percent. Shifting the fees to the buyer does not make them go away, it is still a portion of the sale which is still money out of your pocket. On a $100 sale this is a 25 cents difference.
In an attempt to figure out the size of the website I searched for Groo. 19 issues listed. Ebay 7,200 issues listed.
I have always found comics to be one of the worst categories. Perhaps you should branch out?

·4 months agoIt may be impossible for you to make a profit here, but I do just fine.
Why are you keeping 10% of your products on a platform that does not make you any money?

Pulling 90% of your products off here is one of the best ways to make no profit on here.

·4 months ago@comics_from_mars Of course, there's always the other direction.
The one where you are LESS than brilliant since there are 'just a couple competitors' out there in the world (11,000,000 plus on this site alone) and has NOTHING to do with FEES (as most know- 'Comics' were over in 2004)

·4 months agoOnly 18 million sellers left.
grand-and-glorious-purpose
·4 months agoDown from a high of 25 million.
Losing more than 30% of sellers on a selling website is not quite the flex one might think.
stainlessenginecovers
·4 months agoYou are correct. I bought the part for $20 in 1982. It sat on a shelf in my barn which is assessed at $240,000 so the 18" space on the shelf it has been sitting on is equivalent to $16 a month rental space. Multiply that times 528 months and we have $8,448.
I need to raise my price.
