It's a scam to include shipping fees in the total they charge for sellers fees.
It's a rip off when the shipping fee is included in the total charged for seller's fees. This is deceptive because it's not based on the profit made. Then you have to pay them back for the shipping fee, after they charged a percentage for it. It's a scam. They claim to take 13-15% for fees, but it has turned out to be 25-50% on lower priced items. I'll be seeking other platforms.

·6 months agoI’ve been on eBay since 2002. Fee’s are disguting nowadays. I used to list everything on eBay. Now it’s only stuff that might be harder to sell locally. I use Marketplace 95% of the time. No fees and sometimes I ship stuff if I get Venmo payment. May consider Mercari in the future. EBay is still last resort, total ripoff

Must not be 'that big' of a deal.

·11 months agoSome people have a $10 item and charge $8 shipping. Others will take that item and charge $14 and $4 shipping. Nothing wrong with that.

·11 months agoYou can call it a "rip off" if you feel that way. Then just don't use the site. But a "scam" it is most certainly not.

·11 months agoIt is blatant fraud and eBay needs to be sued. The total value should NEVER INCLUDE shipping costs.
They are also committing fraud by charging buyers TAX on used items.
One fool replied, " YOU agreed to it", in reality YOU ARE FORCED TO AGREE.

It has been Standard Practice in the payment processing industry to charge fees on the customer's WHOLE ENTIRE PAYMENT including shipping charges and sales taxes since at least the mid 1950s when the Diners Club card became widely available,
Apparently you have never qualified to have a merchant account with any credit/debit card company and never learned that.
We paid fees to Moneris, our cc payment processor * .We had merchant accounts from about 1979 until we closed our business in 2015.
https://www.moneris.com/
This is the Canadian site but the company is international.
*We took Visa and MasterCard but not American Express. Discover is only available and accepted in the USA. We had merchant accounts from about 1979 until we closed our business in 2015.

·11 months agoOkay - off you go then! No time like the present and all that! Let us know what your attorney says about what is or is not 'fraud'.
The total value fee is based on a percentage of the total buyer payment.
It is called a Sales Tax - not a New Stuff Only tax. It is a tax on the SALE and it is based on the destination state - not where the seller lives. That is the law - not something Ebay dreamed up.
If you want to sell then you agree to the terms of Ebay. They in turn have to follow the law.
P.S. Stop screaming at sellers in THEIR feedback about things on Ebay that YOU do not understand. Perhaps Ebay is not for you.

·1 year agoEbay DOES SCAM sellers on fees but what you mentioned is nothing, it's even understandable when sellers started putting 100$ items as 1$ and 99$ shipping.
ebay CLREALY SCAMS sellers by charging them fees on taxes collected buyer pays ON THEIR COUNTRY!! Just insane. Ebay collects 10$ sales tax from a buyer and the seller pays fees on that 10$. THAT is a scam.

Buyers dont pay taxes on Ebay to their country...whatever that means. Ebay collects sales taxes from buyers depending what on what their state has mandated. They then distribute those taxes to each state, and charge a small fee to the seller for processing that. Sure beats every seller from having to do that.

·1 year agoThis is deceptive because it's not based on the profit made.
It is stated explicitly in the fee schedule, so it is only deceptive if you are not paying attention.
They claim to take 13-15% for fees
They claim to take 13-15% of the total sale including the shipping. So if you are calculating the percentage wrong and then complaining that the result you get is deceptive, that is a mistake in your calculation.

·1 year agoIt just all comes down to sellers not fully understanding all the cost involved in selling from fees to shipping costs. If you don't understand the impact of costs, you will bleed out.

·1 year ago@shereeunderwoo_0 left this FB for one of their buyers : "The buyer was great, but I think it's wrong for Ebay to add shipping in the value of the item. It's misleading about how much is taken out. When shipping is added to the value, Ebay actually took 25% from the actual value of the item. I'll probably use other venues now."
Why on earth would you write about your dissatisfaction with eBay in a feedback left for your buyer? You should be thanking the buyer for their purchase, not complaining about the platform. They had nothing to do with the fees that eBay charged. And I'm sure after reading what you left them, they couldn't care less where you sell because they won't be buying from you again.

selling costs are shown in the seller's hub under performance.
Performance - eBay Seller Hub
The graph breaks down those costs. Shows fees/other expenses.
Hovering on the graph shows the costs/%ages
At the moment my "selling costs" are 30%
Lower price items have a higher selling cost %age. That's how math works.
$10 item my costs %age is higher.
$100 item my costs %age is lower.

·1 year agoYour buyers will be happy when you do.
That feedback you left them is a policy violation.
Perhaps you should READ ebay policies, instead of calling things a scam.
Smart buyers read feedback and will steer clear of buying from sellers who neglect to follow or understand ebay policies.

·1 year agoeBay fees are more than reasonable.
This topic makes the thread lines daily.
The fees/CODB are fully & transparently outlined.
I would NOT, however, be opposed to more direct/plain language that articulates the "effective" per transaction fees accompanied by more examples.
This would explain a lot to the myriads of sellers that come to the boards seeking clarifications.
IMHO.
buyselljack2016
·1 year agoAs would be expected the "selling costs" are a bigger chunk of the overall sale on "lower price items". It's basic math. The cost of selling is expected to be higher, but it should not be confused with "fees".

So much misunderstanding.
Isn't profit kind of defined as earnings after deduction of all the fees and costs, etc.? Google told me this: profit is "a financial gain, especially the difference between the amount earned and the amount spent in buying, operating, or producing something." eBay's fees are an amount you spend for operating your business of selling on eBay.
The confusion over shipping costs seems rampant in this eBay selling forum. If people took a few quiet minutes to think through the process, they would see that "you" do not "have to pay them (eBay) back for the shipping fee."
Reading this eBay Selling Community Forum often, two or three times a week, maybe more, can be very educational for eBay sellers.

You obviously have no clue to how Ebay 'works'. To think that they would actually employ, and pay for 'ringers' on the boards, when they couldnt care less about any sellers complaints is hilarious.

·1 year agoYeah but it's an ingenious method of preventing sellers from listing an item for $10. and charging $80. shipping to avoid paying eBay fees isn't it?
That was happening... This was the "fix"
That said you are welcome to go sell anywhere you please..
All and I mean ALL selling platforms have fees some are VERY high. EBay's are fair for the most part.
a_c_green
·1 year agoAn incomplete fix, but yes; they charge a percentage of the buyer's full payment (more so if you're buying into Promoted Listings).
It would have been more fair to deduct the actual cost of postage first (which they can see if purchasing the label through eBay), and then take their percentage from the remainder as usual. That way, those sellers trying to avoid fees such as in your $10/$80 example would not be successful, but likewise the sellers of heavier items needing higher postage prices would not be penalized by paying a proportionately higher Final Value Fee than those sellers needing only a little postage to ship something light.
It's not a "scam," and the rates are out there for anyone who cares to look, but it's certainly less fair to sellers who need more postage. For example, a seller of a $100 bowling ball who charges $20 in shipping gets billed FVFs for a $120 payment, even though he actually receives only $100 after postage. A seller of a $100 watch who charges $5 in shipping pays FVFs on only $105 (but actually receives the same $100 after postage). In either case, deducting the actual postage paid first, before applying the FVFs, would bring both sellers down to a level playing field by billing on the same $100 sale for each.
This correction would also work for those sellers offering Free Shipping. Using the same examples again, the seller of a $100 bowling ball would actually receive $80 after buying the postage, but would pay FVFs on $100, and the seller of a $100 watch would actually receive $95, but would pay FVFs on $100. By deducting the actual cost of the postage bought through eBay, the bowling ball seller would pay FVFs on $80 and the watch seller would pay FVFs on $95, in both cases the charges reflecting what they actually received.
But we do not live in a perfect world, and eBay charges a percentage based on what the buyer paid vs. what the seller received. That is not likely to change anytime soon.
