Item delivered but delivery driver left item outside door which was then apparently stolen so buyer
I recently sold an item which was tracked and shown as delivered with photo proof, although the driver left the item at the door. The buyer is saying that the item was stolen and has opened a case to get refunded. Surely I shouldn’t have to refund as I sent the item, it was tracked and proof with photo and GPS of delivery. Should I be worried

·1 year agoI've only had this happen once, some years ago. Buyer opened an "Item Not Received" case, all I could do was continue to add the tracking number each time eBay sent me a reminder. I also apologized to the buyer for the loss of their package; buyer was understanding. After a week or so, got the notification from eBay that the dispute was resolved in my favor. Although they were out the item and shipping cost, buyer must've been satisfied with the way I handled it as they soon purchased another item from me. This time I offered them a "signature required" delivery option, which they opted for. Once the carrier is in possession of the item and it has been sent to the correct address, INR cases should be resolved between the carrier and the buyer; the seller can't be liable for package thefts.

·1 year agoI applaud eBay and USPS for adding the item out for delivery email. There is even less excuse for not being responsible for what is on your porch.

·1 year agoItem out for delivery is a USPS thing not an eBay thing. Does not matter who you order from, USPS tracking will show its movement including out for delivery.

·1 year agoThat's true, but eBay has made recent additions to buyer notification emails in response to those USPS tracking updates.
When USPS updates the status to Out for Delivery, eBay sends off an email to the buyer's off-eBay address under the Subject line of "Out for delivery: order 12-34567-89012" (and, in another sign of offshore programming, the mailing address is miss-ordered as City Name, ZIP Code, State Abbreviation).
When USPS updates the status to Delivered, eBay sends off a second email under the Subject line of "ORDER DELIVERED: [listing title here]" (and this time they get the Delivery Address in the correct order).

·1 year agoIn my experience FEDEX Ground never even rings the bell. They always leave the package outside.
Your credit card issuer will probably issue a refund in spite of the tracking number, no matter what Ebay decides. Skip the middleman, open the chargeback dispute, save time and aggravation.
Sellers who chose to ship by FEDEX ground do so based on price and they should be aware that that price comes with poor service.

·1 year agoFor those folks saying "add the tracking" and "you MUST add the tracking to the case", be aware that ebay changed that and now you can't add a Tracking # if it already shows delivered.

·1 year agoThey are talking about the item not received case that has been opened. Are you saying that you can't add the tracking number in the reply to that case? The shipping page and case page have had a disconnect and if a case is opened, you needed to send the tracking number to show it was delivered when replying to that case.
brightlightbookseller
·1 year agoThat's correct, they actually fixed that disconnect, so you don't need to (and can't) edit or add the tracking number if it already shows delivered. One of the few partially beneficial changes they've made recently, though without being announced or explained in any way of course.

·1 year agoI haven't had the pleasure of an INR claim recently so I can't see this for myself, but are we talking about adding the tracking number to the Order Details, or adding it to the INR claim itself?
I recall that eBay would not allow a tracking number to be added to the Order Details after shipment if an Item Not Received claim had already been opened. I assume this was intended to foil slippery sellers who would mail out a trinket with a tracking number in the hopes of forestalling eBay closing the claim in the buyer's favor.
As for adding the tracking number to the claim itself, even though it was already plainly visible in the Order Details, whether that was actually necessary was something that everyone has been going back and forth on for years. I know eBay contacts have said on the record that it was not required if the sale already had the number uploaded there, but others felt that if the claim was asking for the number anyway, it should be provided (again). Kind of a belt-and-suspenders approach, but there you are...

·1 year agoThese days, if you try to add the tracking # it will say "you cannot add a tracking # when it shows delivered" or something like that.

·1 year agoJust add the tracking number to the Not Received case and it should close in your favor.
You must add the tracking to the case.

·1 year agoJust reply to the case with the tracking number. Once delivered, risk of loss transfers to the buyer. So, if it's stolen , rained on or trampled flat by yaks it's not your problem once delivered.
No need to worry.

·1 year agoPeople (buyers, mainly), can be hard to please. Calling the police will only allow a report to be filed. The person wants their money back and will expect eBay to refund it no matter if it impacts you directly, or not. The only thing you should be concerned about is that eBay, in their infinite unfair policies, doesn't "ding" you for it. Case in point: I sold a used, working computer hard drive to someone (for $15!). I put it in an anti-static bag, sealed shut, then wrapped it with a lot of bubble wrap. The USPS left it on the buyer's porch, where it proceeded to get rained on. The buyer contacted me to request a refund for the wet package. I told him that I am not responsible for how it is delivered, then I asked if he even opened the box and unwrapped the drive to test it. He wouldn't respond. He proceeded to report the item to eBay as "Not as described" which is ridiculous, since I couldn't have known to post a disclaimer in my listing explaining that the package might be wet! I was very angry that people like this exist. I called eBay and they told me that they would have the buyer send it back to me. When I received it, the drive was thrown into a box that was too large with a flat piece of plastic that used to be 3 pouches filled with air. There were broken parts rattling inside the box. The drive was destroyed because he didn't bother package it the way I had (properly). Knowing that there was an internal desiccant pack inside the drive that would indicate if the inside of the drive had moisture, I opened the drive to find that there was no moisture. This proved the wet box had no impact on the contents since it was so heavily wrapped in plastic. What a loser! I contacted eBay to tell them about this (and I made a video of the package as I opened it to prove what was expected). eBay wasn't interested in any proof and told me they would refund the buyer and me. That seemed fair, so I let it go, and blocked that buyer from ever buying from me again (suggested action!). It was months later that I was perusing my eBay account standing/account when I saw that I had been hit with a "defect" on my seller account because of this loser. So, I would recommend that you contact eBay customer support to let them know what this buyer is up to and that you want to make sure it isn't going to impact your seller ratings. Good luck!

·1 year agoDon't forget to also add the disclaimer in your listings that the package might be dusty too 😀. I primarily sell clothing and so far had about a handful of complaints and returns from buyers saying the shirt inside the package is wrinkled (not matching the photo in the listing).

·1 year agoWhat type of case did the buyer open? If it is item not received, type in the tracking number that shows delivered and you should win the case. You are not responsible for theft after delivery. It is up to the buyer to provide a safe delivery space for their items. The buyer would need to contact their local police.

OP1 year agoIt was an item not recieved case. There is a tracking number which I provided on the order and it shows delivered and also has a gps location picture of where it was delivered which is the buyers address.

·1 year agoDid you add the tracking number to the INR case? (once the case was opened)
