That would require the Federal Government to get directly involved with taxing or not taxing your property instead of the state doing it like now. I can't see that going well in the long term.
As far as the school system goes I do get rankled when paying my property taxes to fund a broken inefficient system.
I realize I don't actually own my home even though it's paid off. I just rent it from the state and can be evicted if I don't make my property tax/rental payments.

I've had ONE SALE to an international buyer since the tariffs were put in place. Prior to that, anywhere from 1/4th to 1/5th of the comic books purchased from my shop each month were shipped to international buyers in Canada, the UK, and Australia––followed by a smattering of orders to customers in Italy and Spain.
A (now former) repeat buyer in the UK who'd spent a little just over $500 with my shop in the Spring was ready to buy another $300 worth of comics, but the tariffs took away that sale.
I just had a conversation with another buyer in the Netherlands who wanted to buy 15 books, which would have been a $115 dollar transaction. But the $70 bucks he'd now have to pay because of the tariffs––as they have now every month since they were put in place––took that sale away.
Isn't this "Great?" I mean...so. much. winning. ☹ï¸
My international sales have been the lowest in my 17 years of selling. I have to pay taxes on any value coming into the country. Now, it time to hold these Trump supporters feet to the fire when it comes to owning this screwed up Trump economy! Make them pay more this year!
@mozartbach1971 For some reason, the local groceries do not sell Canadian or Mexican celery. I have not bought any (usually California) celery since April, when the Trump Tariffs were introduced/removed/reintroduced/raised/lowered/raised again. Same with Cheerios.
We have a Cheerios producing facility right here in 'Lil ole Covington, GA - aka Dog Patch USA. In the morning one can smell them toasting. Been here since we lived here almost 30 years and have expanded nicely over the years. No stinking tariffs accessed on shipments to the USA, don't know if the export them to other countries that might assess a tariff or other type import Tax like a VAT, etc

I do lots of Australia, NZ, EU, UK sales... all 10-15% tariffs, which I'm living with as a cost of doing business.
I moved any 40-50% tariff items to my Canadian store and blocked US sales (since I don't want to live with those as a cost of doing business). I got a problem, I find a solution.
Today I made a long list of all my problems and told my business partner what I'm doing to resolve each one. There's only a few I can't resolve, one being the banner eBay puts on my listings to tell buyers they have to pay tariffs. I can't resolve that, but I can try and contradict that and hope people who have doubts will ask questions instead of clicking the back button.
It is that they are nonsensical and that the consumer has been lied to.
They are nonsensical because the purpose of a tariff is to control the import of a particular product to the advantage of the home manufacturer.
It makes sense for Canada to restrict imports of dairy products * to protect our dairy industry.
It makes sense for the USA to restrict imports of oranges to protect your citrus industry.
It doesn't make sense to restrict all products from a country, when your country badly needs some of those products -- like Canadian potash, which is thin on the ground in the USA, but makes up most of Saskatchewan.
It makes no sense to raise, lower, raise, lower, raise tariffs on an hourly basis depending on some addled view of a TV show or a bad bowel movement.
Often on high tariff US imports the items just weren't available at all, no demand due to the end price to the consumer.
The US consumer has been told that the exporter will pay the tariff.
But as you correctly point out, the tariffs are paid by the consumer.
Or the exporter finds another market.
Canadian potash already goes to Brazil, and we are selling more and more to India and SouthEast Asia.
I was going to move to Canada to escape all this chaos ... but decided to stay.

Our prime minister's house is mouldy and has rats. The last prime minister relocated, they were supposed to do a big reno on the house to get rid of the mould and rats.
Many international countries shoot themselves in the foot by charging VAT or import tax on all items coming from the US..some as much as 100% while they send their stuff here paying only a fraction of if any to import into the US....Don't blame the US for levelling the playing field...blame your own country...example some International countries charge their own people as much as 100% import duties/VAT on products that US sellers sell to them while we charge US residents 15% to import their products for US buyers.... which basically stops of slows greatly US sellers selling to that country...intentionally., So when the playing field is level and equal % going both ways is just and fair. About time someone did something.
It's wierd to me that more people aren't/weren't aware of the tariff situation years ago. Living and working abroad I faced traiffs as high as the 100% you mentioned on some items I wanted from the US. This was in the early '70's to the late '80's or so. Not recent.
Just a taste of what most of the rest of the world has been doing to us for decades has so many in a panic. You can’t block freight forwarders. Are you saying you blocked a buyer who was using a freight forwarding service, and that buyer has circumvented your block with a new account?
To get back to sales and such...UPS eliminated 48,000 jobs this week, FedEx won't confirm the number of jobs eliminated so it must be high and Amazon first mentioned 30,000 and then stated 13,000 so we don't really know the figures...as not everyone is honest.
A lot of sellers on eBay are drop-shipping from Amazon...so this should be interesting.
Why Amazon is cutting thousands of jobs and yet hiring thousands for the holidays should be a fun holiday event.
I just don't think artificial intelligence is there yet to take over all these job cuts.
I guess customer service will take a 'hit' during the holiday rush.
Just cancelled three shipments which were going to the USA, because Canada Post cannot send anything into the US without pre-payment of import fees.

Problem with Canada Post is that if it's CUSMA they don't acknowledge that.

If there's only X amount of discretionary income, and Y is the cost of necessities, as Y goes up, X goes down. I'm not great with math, numbers, economics and all that... so not one to point those things out since I don't fully understand this stuff myself.
As for the ballroom, the tariffs being collected are paying for it.
I stopped buying from my favorite International sellers totally...and I did a lot of buying before September.
It's just scares me not knowing how much more the final cost will be...I buy auctions.
Today the tariff on China buying from them is 47% tariff...which should hopefully keep some fake garage being bought by USA buyers.
I'm trying to do some sourcing because I have lots of UK buyers now... one of my sources is in the US (and he buys up inventory when dealers pass away or sell their shop), I noticed everything he's getting that's imported by his supplier or that he imported is expensive now, and I wouldn't be able to shop there and compete with other international sellers who aren't paying tariffs from the source.
I did some sourcing in Canada, but they kind of scammed me... (I say kind of because I should have walked out of the store when they were wishy washy with their discount, then gave me a sum for everything I picked without telling me how much the discount was when it was a key negotiating point). That's OK, I'll tell all my friends and they'll stop buying from that dealer. Word about the last dealer that pulled a fast one on me (as a buyer) went through many channels online and everyone found out.
Even if the items you sell aren't subject to a Tariff Tax, the OTHER items your Customers must buy that ARE subject to a higher price AFFECT their extra SPENDING MONEY.
We only buy 99% lean ground beef...which is more pricy.
80% ground beef will have a lot of grease-like stuff in it...whatever it is...I don't know.
I think most meat is icky... I wouldn't know the difference between one beef or another... unless it's something awesome like tenderloin (which we used to get cheap from a local butcher, but he passed away a couple of years ago). $12 for a tenderloin steak (CAD funds), couldn't beat that.

My two cents on medication is that I had learned medication in the US is very expensive. My partner is type 2 diabetic and has to take Ozempic which is $277 CAD per month in Canada. I found out it's $1400 CAD (or $1000 USD) for a month's supply in the US.
My migraine pills are $85 each, but thankfully covered by insurance and they're so restricted I can only get 6 pills every 2 weeks.
Most these people are buying and selling used stuff so it wont effect them. It also appears everyone on this forum is older and set in their political ways and will go out of their way to defend their political ideologies, even if it means paying higher taxes.
I can't say for certain whether the tariffs have affected my own sales specifically. But overall, Americans have less disposable income this year than they used to, as many of the non-ebay things they already purchase are being hit by tariffs.
Additionally there's the loss of SNAP benefits, and cutting of ACA subsidies right around the corner, so that's going to reduce disposable income even further if the Republicans don't stop holding our government hostage.
Tariffs have been around a long time - with that said never did sell internationally - too much can go wrong didn't want the hassle - just to the 50 US states, APO/FPO/ US Protectorates (Guam etc.), Puerto Rico. Enough shoppers/buyers there and all with tracking delivery service by the USPS. Had a few Canadian buyers that had items shipped to a US address near the US/Ca border near Canada to avoid shipping cost into Canada. Canada has a population of about 12% of the US with a lot of wide open spaces from coast to coast..

As to be expected sellers based in china are lying about where there stock is and tricking the system.

I'm totally in the same boat as you, and if you want to join us over in the Canadian forum you will have lots of company with the same complaint.
Packages shipped with Canada Post are "duties paid", I ship with Stallion which is also "duties paid". The description of my listing says so. Every once in a while someone asks for clarification and I have to tell them the banner is applied by eBay, I can't get rid of it, and this is how I ship... I like your banner. I have verbage in my listing, but the buyer has to click on the listing and actually read past the banner down to the description to see it.
I'm adding "no tariffs" to my titles (not all, some are too long, but it's something I'll work on this weekend) so that atleast if buyers aren't screening for "US only" listings and browsing so my listings show up, they can see that I'm advertising no tariffs before having to read the listing (and my verbiage reinforces it).
eBay.com put the banner there, and it's on all non-USA listings when the shipping location is USA.
Please join us in the Canadian eBay sellers' forum... you'll make lots of friends there who feel the same was we do about the banner.

I would do this, but unfortunately it's $4 for me to mail a stamp to Japan/Australia/UK. I can give good shipping rates on coins and stuff like that (compared to Canada Post rates since I use a shipper who does international shipments with NL Post).
If a buyer purchases 3 or 4 stamps on cards, it will be cheaper an shipping than me adding $4 to each item and offering "free shipping".
I suppose with more expensive items I can offer free shipping.

I thought it was 3.65 (not nit picking, but is important if I apply stamps to the package).
I can get mint unused postage at 60% FV, so $2.19 CAD. I have lots of 99 cent and 1.99 type lots, so postage won't be covered. I also have to cover the cost of the item at minimum.
I can review the shipping prices for international orders, but there's a lot going on right now. I'm off to dinner shortly to sit and discuss things with my eBay business to get some feedback on my ideas.
Its' hard to tell since most of the items I sell are unique, however sometimes I feel like I'm getting less international orders then previously.
I am definitely getting more international orders than I am used to.
Before Ebay Global Shipping, now EIS I would not export.
If I went back to no exports, I would probably lose most if not all of that business. Some would ship to Freight Forwarders. Might cost me 3 - 5% of my sales.
This article on the 2024 (2025 to be provided later) operating loss just might shed some light on why the increases.. Just a few years ago the operating losses were a mere -3 billion each year. What a difference a day makes EH? - Guess those high dollar van purchases are really breaking the USPS Check Book or spend like a Navy finishing their basic training at Navy Pier in Chicago during the late 60s/70s - they were all over Rush/State/Division street sthey like to hang out at Barnaby's (now a long time parking lot)

·10 months agoThe problem is not the tariffs as such.
It is that they are nonsensical and that the consumer has been lied to.
They are nonsensical because the purpose of a tariff is to control the import of a particular product to the advantage of the home manufacturer.
It makes sense for Canada to restrict imports of dairy products * to protect our dairy industry.
It makes sense for the USA to restrict imports of oranges to protect your citrus industry.
It doesn't make sense to restrict all products from a country, when your country badly needs some of those products -- like Canadian potash, which is thin on the ground in the USA, but makes up most of Saskatchewan.
It makes no sense to raise, lower, raise, lower, raise tariffs on an hourly basis depending on some addled view of a TV show or a bad bowel movement.
Often on high tariff US imports the items just weren't available at all, no demand due to the end price to the consumer.
The US consumer has been told that the exporter will pay the tariff.
But as you correctly point out, the tariffs are paid by the consumer.
Or the exporter finds another market.
Canadian potash already goes to Brazil, and we are selling more and more to India and SouthEast Asia.
* From the entire world, btw, not just the USA.

I went to an event there some 30 years ago. It gets refurbished but has had the same decor for about 150 years.

Fixed that.
Those import taxes are charged to their nationals on the goods whatever country they come from.
And VAT is a sales tax on all goods (and sometimes services) wherever they are produced including domestically.

·10 months agoMany international countries shoot themselves in the foot by charging VAT or import tax on all items coming from the US..some as much as 100% while they send their stuff here paying only a fraction of if any to import into the US....Don't blame the US for levelling the playing field...blame your own country...example some International countries charge their own people as much as 100% import duties/VAT on products that US sellers sell to them while we charge US residents 15% to import their products for US buyers.... which basically stops of slows greatly US sellers selling to that country...intentionally., So when the playing field is level and equal % going both ways is just and fair. About time someone did something.

·10 months agoIt's wierd to me that more people aren't/weren't aware of the tariff situation years ago. Living and working abroad I faced traiffs as high as the 100% you mentioned on some items I wanted from the US. This was in the early '70's to the late '80's or so. Not recent.
Just a taste of what most of the rest of the world has been doing to us for decades has so many in a panic. Often on high tariff US imports the items just weren't available at all, no demand due to the end price to the consumer. If I wanted certain items I would have to stock up on visits home and pay the duties upon my return.

·10 months agoHelp greatly by strangling all the counterfeit chinesium parts that were priced below cost to produce, as well as setting up satellite stores claiming USA and flooding same product with different seller ID's...very easy to pick out with low feedback, and strange use of language....and not knowing exactly what they fit...Definite increase in sales despite ebay induced issues.

·10 months agoFreight forwarding takes much of the risk out of shipping internationally.
It was designed as a Seller Protection programme, and has nothing much to benefit any buyer.
It might be useful to actually read the policy.

·10 months agoNo. The fact that eBay does not enforce their own policy on not allowing freight forwarders from primarily Doral, FL and Wilmington, DE and the surrounding area to open multiple username accounts in violation of their own policy who export items and then open INAD or payment disputes sucking the time and money from small business owners that are American owned is perhaps the bigger problem. Especially for those who are required to offer "free subsidized" shipping. That is what cuts into margins. It's less of a political problem and more of a business practice problem within this platform.

·9 months agoSeller blocks a known problematic freight forwarder, they open another username to bypass that block. That is against eBay policy. They also lose coverage under the money back guarantee, with INAD and INR claims, again which is an established policy. Couple examples for you @slippinjimmy are attached. Perhaps should read up on existing policies more prior to commenting or ask for a pay raise for your "advice" on this board?

·10 months agoTo get back to sales and such...UPS eliminated 48,000 jobs this week, FedEx won't confirm the number of jobs eliminated so it must be high and Amazon first mentioned 30,000 and then stated 13,000 so we don't really know the figures...as not everyone is honest.
A lot of sellers on eBay are drop-shipping from Amazon...so this should be interesting.
Why Amazon is cutting thousands of jobs and yet hiring thousands for the holidays should be a fun holiday event.
I just don't think artificial intelligence is there yet to take over all these job cuts.
I guess customer service will take a 'hit' during the holiday rush.

·10 months agoJust cancelled three shipments which were going to the USA, because Canada Post cannot send anything into the US without pre-payment of import fees.

Problem with Canada Post is that if it's CUSMA they don't acknowledge that.

·10 months agoIf there's only X amount of discretionary income, and Y is the cost of necessities, as Y goes up, X goes down. I'm not great with math, numbers, economics and all that... so not one to point those things out since I don't fully understand this stuff myself.
As for the ballroom, the tariffs being collected are paying for it.

(Not trying to argue, I actually agree with you, since all of us foreign sellers who are paying tariffs have increased our prices).

·10 months agoI stopped buying from my favorite International sellers totally...and I did a lot of buying before September.
It's just scares me not knowing how much more the final cost will be...I buy auctions.
Today the tariff on China buying from them is 47% tariff...which should hopefully keep some fake garage being bought by USA buyers.

·10 months agoI'm trying to do some sourcing because I have lots of UK buyers now... one of my sources is in the US (and he buys up inventory when dealers pass away or sell their shop), I noticed everything he's getting that's imported by his supplier or that he imported is expensive now, and I wouldn't be able to shop there and compete with other international sellers who aren't paying tariffs from the source.
I did some sourcing in Canada, but they kind of scammed me... (I say kind of because I should have walked out of the store when they were wishy washy with their discount, then gave me a sum for everything I picked without telling me how much the discount was when it was a key negotiating point). That's OK, I'll tell all my friends and they'll stop buying from that dealer. Word about the last dealer that pulled a fast one on me (as a buyer) went through many channels online and everyone found out.

I ask because Ground Beef is $9 a pound where I shop, $8 a pound if you buy a great big pack of it (too much for my household).
My roommate buys ground chicken, turkey or pork because it's so much cheaper (and we farm cattle in Canada, where I live).
I don't buy meat unless it comes in some frozen thing I'm buying to heat up in the oven. But I don't cook with meat. Too expensive here.

We only buy 99% lean ground beef...which is more pricy.
80% ground beef will have a lot of grease-like stuff in it...whatever it is...I don't know.

I wouldn't know the difference between one beef or another... unless it's something awesome like tenderloin (which we used to get cheap from a local butcher, but he passed away a couple of years ago). $12 for a tenderloin steak (CAD funds), couldn't beat that.

I just picked up a new scrip from the Pharmacy. 30 pills for $755.32
or about $25.18 per pill once a day.
Now how is a U.S. citizen supposed to have any spare $$
to spend on non necessities?

·10 months agoI'm curious what kind of pills cost so much (but it would be impolite for me to ask).
My two cents on medication is that I had learned medication in the US is very expensive. My partner is type 2 diabetic and has to take Ozempic which is $277 CAD per month in Canada. I found out it's $1400 CAD (or $1000 USD) for a month's supply in the US.
My migraine pills are $85 each, but thankfully covered by insurance and they're so restricted I can only get 6 pills every 2 weeks.

Since I own all the products I sell, it will be some time before I need to restock.

·10 months agoI can't say for certain whether the tariffs have affected my own sales specifically. But overall, Americans have less disposable income this year than they used to, as many of the non-ebay things they already purchase are being hit by tariffs.
Additionally there's the loss of SNAP benefits, and cutting of ACA subsidies right around the corner, so that's going to reduce disposable income even further if the Republicans don't stop holding our government hostage.
You do the math.

·10 months agoTariffs have been around a long time - with that said never did sell internationally - too much can go wrong didn't want the hassle - just to the 50 US states, APO/FPO/ US Protectorates (Guam etc.), Puerto Rico. Enough shoppers/buyers there and all with tracking delivery service by the USPS. Had a few Canadian buyers that had items shipped to a US address near the US/Ca border near Canada to avoid shipping cost into Canada. Canada has a population of about 12% of the US with a lot of wide open spaces from coast to coast..

·10 months agoI am in the UK and ship to the US, ebay puts a blue banner on top of non US listings warning about tariffs, the banner contains a link to a page that has not been updated since august and is WRONG! its putting buyers off, from the UK we have to pay the tarrifs when we buy a shipping label but ebay say the tariffs have to be paid on arrival in the US by the buyer, which has decreased my sales to the US. ebay say I should update my item titles to say this but its not possible in 80 letter heading. As to be expected sellers based in china are lying about where there stock is and tricking the system.

I'm totally in the same boat as you, and if you want to join us over in the Canadian forum you will have lots of company with the same complaint.
Packages shipped with Canada Post are "duties paid", I ship with Stallion which is also "duties paid". The description of my listing says so. Every once in a while someone asks for clarification and I have to tell them the banner is applied by eBay, I can't get rid of it, and this is how I ship... I can only imagine how many others skip past the listing when they see the banner, so my sales are down because of a misleading banner on my listings, not because of tariffs, since everything is duties paid, so the buyer doesn't have to worry about charges on delivery.

·10 months agoWhen eventually managed to contact ebay customer support, the first time the said they did not know what PDDP was, the second time I contacted them they told me to contact Royal Mail in the UK to get the blue banner removed, the third time I contacted they told me it was now federal law that ebat had to display the blue banner. Governments around the world make laws which form a framework that we all hve to work with but misapplying the law is wrong.
I made these up to send after buyers have purchased to reaasure them, I was going to add them to all my listings but A: I cant be arsed and B: ebay will probably delete all the listings I add them to.
Ebay yields very little for me, I have my own websites as well and at 28% fees its not worth me spending much time doing much on ebay.
As always, no matter what the rules are the rules are that you accept ebay on and As Is basis take it or leave it.

·10 months agoI like your banner. I have verbage in my listing, but the buyer has to click on the listing and actually read past the banner down to the description to see it.
I'm adding "no tariffs" to my titles (not all, some are too long, but it's something I'll work on this weekend) so that atleast if buyers aren't screening for "US only" listings and browsing so my listings show up, they can see that I'm advertising no tariffs before having to read the listing (and my verbiage reinforces it).
eBay.com put the banner there, and it's on all non-USA listings when the shipping location is USA.
Please join us in the Canadian eBay sellers' forum... you'll make lots of friends there who feel the same was we do about the banner.

My International Buyers are a lot now...more than ever.
I never had so many buyers from Japan...even Canada is still buying from me like crazy.

·10 months agoI would do this, but unfortunately it's $4 for me to mail a stamp to Japan/Australia/UK. I can give good shipping rates on coins and stuff like that (compared to Canada Post rates since I use a shipper who does international shipments with NL Post).
If a buyer purchases 3 or 4 stamps on cards, it will be cheaper an shipping than me adding $4 to each item and offering "free shipping".
I suppose with more expensive items I can offer free shipping.

Technically it's $3.61 (+GST) which is $$2.53USD for our American colleagues.
But as a sometime stamp dealer, you may have access to mint never hinged stamps which are still valid for postage -- and can be purchased at a steep discount.
I reckon on half price for the postage I use from DH's 40 year stock from the now closed shop in Ottawa. Which is probably too high.
Oh and there is no GST on those stamps. That was paid on purchase years ago.
While eBay prefers tracked shipping, we non-US sellers can qualify for Global Top Rated Seller without it. Of course, tracking is only important in case of complaints or Claims from the buyer. We are encouraged , strongly, to track, but we are not required to track.

·10 months agoI thought it was 3.65 (not nit picking, but is important if I apply stamps to the package).
I can get mint unused postage at 60% FV, so $2.19 CAD. I have lots of 99 cent and 1.99 type lots, so postage won't be covered. I also have to cover the cost of the item at minimum.
I can review the shipping prices for international orders, but there's a lot going on right now. I'm off to dinner shortly to sit and discuss things with my eBay business to get some feedback on my ideas.

Before Ebay Global Shipping, now EIS I would not export.
If I went back to no exports, I would probably lose most if not all of that business. Some would ship to Freight Forwarders. Might cost me 3 - 5% of my sales.

·10 months agoThis article on the 2024 (2025 to be provided later) operating loss just might shed some light on why the increases.. Just a few years ago the operating losses were a mere -3 billion each year. What a difference a day makes EH? - Guess those high dollar van purchases are really breaking the USPS Check Book or spend like a Navy finishing their basic training at Navy Pier in Chicago during the late 60s/70s - they were all over Rush/State/Division street sthey like to hang out at Barnaby's (now a long time parking lot)
