Is This a Scam? New Seller Would Love Advice
Hello everyone!
I listed an item and a few days later I had a short back and forth about price with the buyer. I just made the sale and then I got this message from the buyer. The names and email have been censored for privacy but everything else is verbatim copy/paste including all punctuation:
"Done , if possible can you send me a simple receipt with the Name : [different name] .
To **************@prodigy.net.mx
Thank you , I apreciate all your help and sorry for all the trouble , regards
[name which is included in the user's username, and which was used in all previous messages]"
The buyer has 47 item entries, 100% positive buyer feedback with a couple entries in the past month, been a member for 12 years, and listed as located in the USA. The shipping address is to Mexico though, and the email address appears to me to be from Mexico though, with that ".mx" suffix, right? The buyer has purchased items from the same category as the one I sold.
It's a $170 dollar item and to me that's high dollar. I would be gutted if this is a scam and I lose the item and the money. What should I do? I think it's strange that the buyer wants a receipt from me with a different name. Is this a variation of the wrong address scam? The fact that it's going across borders makes me even more suspicious or uncomfortable. Advice would be appreciated so so much. Thank you!

·2 years agoAs far as the sale goes: You’re covered by eBay. What are you worried about? As for the receipt: Just explain to the buyer that you will not alter or fabricate (a)nother receipt as a packing slip etc., should suffice for record keeping purposes. That’s all. You are not obligated to perform any other functions. Just sell, pack and ship. ***Keep in mind sometimes families (and businesses) in foreign countries (especially poorer areas) use ONE account for the ENTIRE family or operation for purchases.***

Basically, you are required to ship to the address that eBay supplies for you in the order details. There is no way for you to send any sort of "receipt", much less on for a different ID etc.
The buyer can print out any sort of receipt they want and tweak it as they so desire. It is not something you should or can do for them. When they pay, ship. If they don't pay, cancel the sale on day 5 for non-payment and be done with this person.

·2 years agoTo be honest, I don't see how a receipt with a different name on it is going to make any difference to anything. You just need to ensure that the buyer pays through eBay as usual, and that you ship to the address you receive with the payment.
However... your listing shows First Class Package shipping direct to Mexico. Unless I'm mistaken, you will have no Delivery Confirmation on that $170 Mercedes part, as Mexico is not one of the e-DELCON countries that share First Class Internation delivery data with the U.S. It would be preferable to ship either via Priority Mail International or eBay International Shipping. PMI will give you Delivery Confirmation, or eIS will take responsibility for the international delivery if you go that way.

A Mercedes hazard light switch doesn't strike me as a highly-scammed part. It might be that your buyer is going to bill the expense to his customer for a car he is repairing.

I might also add that ebay will let them print out a receipt for this transaction.
