Is ebay going to butt in?

I have an INR case that will expire at midnight tonight, but I shipped a replacement out as per buyer request (they didn't want a refund). The replacement is still in transit. I tried to put a hold on this case but was unable to because the CS said I had to wait until the grace period is over in order to put a hold on it. Is this true?

The buyer knows to not escalate the case, but sometimes I get "bots" doing things for us on their own. Like sometimes I miss the time period to accept a return and issue return postage, and ebay's "bots" chime in and accept the return and issue the return postage to the buyer for me once the grace period expires. That way the return doesn't get turned into a case. Do you guys know if the "bots" would do the same for an INR that will expire? Will it escalate for the buyer without notice?

E-commerce isn't about doing the right thing.  Its about serving and transfering wealth to the trustless owners.

I have my own website where I engage in e-commerce by selling items directly to buyers.

Does that make me a "trustless owner"?

No, the INR will not auto-escalate. Either you or the buyer would have to ask eBay to step in.

If that does not happen, the INR will eventually time out due to inactivity. I believe it's after 21 days (biz days? or calendar days? I'd have to look up that detail to tell you for sure.)

If there's a delivery scan, that will cause the INR to auto-close in your favor within 24 hours. That's because the INR was opened before there was a delivery scan. If an INR was opened after there was a delivery scan then it would not auto-close and would hang open until either timed out or escalated.

Now if you put the INR on hold, that's equivalent to escalating to a case and when the hold period expires, INR will be found in buyer's favor if no delivery scan.

Did you write the tracking number in the Claim?
That usually gives you some breathing room.

    However.

The bad news is that eBay has a Money Back Guarantee.

    Not a Replacement Guarantee.

    MONEY BACK Guarantee.

I doubt the buyer meant to scam you, but the MBG says that the seller must refund when they get the unwanted item back or abandon the item and refund.

    Nothing about replacements.

So you are about to be out two items plus the payment.

    MONEY BACK.

Sorry that you have had this learning experience.

    Everyone hates those.

Yes, but tracking status isn’t to my benefit. The scans seem to be incomplete as there’s no more updates after “in transit” a few days ago but the package got returned to me with a No Such Number sticker on it. The buyer admitted to not putting his unit number down and preferred the item over refund so he paid me to re-ship it out correctly.

Yes I understand sending a replacement in lieu of a refund is unorthodox. I’ve done it numerous times for buyers who prefer replacements. Typically those times I just call eBay to close it out in my favor once the tracking on the replacement shows delivered.
