Is eBay generating automatic feedback - "order delivered on time with no issues"?
I have received several of these lately from sellers that do not normally leave feedback.

·4 months agoWas aware that eBay started giving auto positive FB on behalf of a buyer who does not leave FB for that seller within 10 days if the transaction appears to have gone well.
Don't believe I've read where a similar auto FB is being given on behalf of a seller who does not leave FB for a buyer.

·4 months agoTrue... I give ebay a negative feedback on that one. It seems I have too long given bad behavior the benefit of the doubt when there is an awkward transaction. What this means is we have to be more proactive with negative or neutral until we find out otherwise. I have always given positive when things go well, but I just checked my own as a buyer and not everyone gives positive when they get the money up front.
I just gave someone a neutral for actually telling me they are holding my positive for ransom until they see my feedback.
soh.maryl
·4 months agoAs a buyer, you can only be given positive FB, so it's hard to understand why a seller wants to withhold it until he sees the FB the buyer leaves for him. I mean, what's the point?
And, does that person know that eBay will leave auto FB for the SELLER if it appears the transaction has gone well without problems?

·5 months agoYes, eBay add automatic feedback when buyers do not leave feedback and there is no problem with the transaction. It is quite new and the best thing eBay has done in a long time.

·5 months agoWe 'love' the auto fb 'from' buyers - We're a real store and have a customer who only buys on ebay, and never left FB except negatives when truly warranted.
He said he now 'felt forced' to find/replace the auto deal ones with "no feedback left" as he just doesn't want to leave FB - for whatever reason he has. He's also not happy that he will now 'have to leave that 'no fb left' fb before they do theirs'
So his solution? He's having us buy his books so he doesn't have to deal with the fb ... and we're making 'found' money, just typing in an item number and then buying it.

·5 months ago@a-lotta-stuff
I like the Auto-FB. I was getting like 1 in 2 FBs from Buyers so was above eBay's curve they identified as 1 in 3. I've read other sources where it's like 1 in5, 1 in 8 and 1 in 10. I think a lot has to do with categories and the Buyers active in them. I have seen a few of my Buyers who have never left any FB. It is not everybody's "thing" and I get that.
gurlcat
·5 months ago@a-lotta-stuff I'm confused. So he comes into your store, points to books he physically "found" on the shelves, then you have to buy them from your own eBay account? Why when that costs you eBay fees? Or am I just totally misunderstanding what you described?
a-lotta-stuff
·5 months agoNo - He's finding the books on ebay, gives us the item numbers, and we charge him 10% over cost.

I was under the impression that, if a buyer wants to leave his own FB, but the auto has already been left, he would be able to replace it with his own remarks. Not true?
jonathanbrightlight

Even after there has been auto FB left, the buyer can still replace it with his own. You might want to mention that to him. The rest of this sounds strange about him finding books on eBay that he wants to buy, and then you buy them for him?
a-lotta-stuff
·5 months ago"Does this person realize .... can still replace it with his own."
Yes he does, but he doesn't want to have any feedback left in the first place. He doesn't want to have to replace anything, he wants it completely removed.
To him the 10% is worth not having to deal with changing his feedback.

Auto feedback awarded to eBay sellers helps to discourage buyer feedback participation
Exactly how does that work? Why would it discourage? If anything, it sounds like its more likely to encourage buyers to leave feedback, to be sure they are getting the word in they wanted, rather than let an automated method do it for them, right?
It may be helpful to review negs & neutrals left by buyers when considering making a purchase
It is always prudent to review a seller's feedback. I look at many factors, even the positives at times, as well as what they leave for others, and how they reply to negative feedback.
There are many sellers I have skipped buying from based purely on their feedback history for one reason or another. And there are some that despite having some negatives, I still bought from them, as I could see they either sold a LOT of items, or they handled negatives professionally. And I know some buyers are just complainers against sellers. You can find those pretty easy too. Their feedback left for others are often full of negatives left for sellers. So its a pattern, and then you can ignore that feedback based on their behavior. But that is seriously digging to see those things.
Hell the two negative's I got last year were both simply that. The buyer ordered an item, I shipped it promptly, they got it right away, and the next thing I got was a negative. No message, no return opened, nothing. In both cases, I addressed them and let them know they could message or open a return if they weren't happy. Neither one did.
Some buyers are just like that. They complain to complain, and don't even try to resolve the issue or give me an opportunity to resolve it and potentially remove the neg. I would be more than happy to solve a problem, but if a buyer goes straight to a neg and does nothing else, I'm already dinged at that point. Hence why in both of those, I told them to message or open a return. I'm not going to roll over and refund just because they left a neg. But if they took that next proper step, they would get helped. *shrug
Feedback is important. For smaller sellers like myself, every feedback matters with regards to the percentages. One neg hurts a lot when you sell 150 or more items a year vs someone selling thousands a month.

·5 months agoeBay's positive automatic transaction feedback is a rebuttal presumption, drafted & sent by eBay & likely viewed by manny buyers as being a nice convenience
mr_lincoln
·5 months agoHi @joycecooperjoyce
Auto-feedback was launched on September 5, 2025. eBay leaves that generic Positive FB on a Selling account about 7-10 days after a confirmed delivery and as long as no issues are detected on the transaction. Buyers can still leave their own FB which will then replace the Auto-FB.
Regardless of Auto-FB or natural FB from customers your FB count goes up and if the Buyer never leaves and FB you still retain the Auto-FB and the associated count on your profile.
On a side note, Sellers who sell multiple items to one Buyer and subsequently get an FB for each item will only be credited for ONE FB on their annual percentage calculation but on their FB history they can see the total of all FB received.
gurlcat
·5 months ago@mr_lincoln Aint it something how, if a person is going to be upset about auto-feedback, it's only when they first learn about it, regardless of whether it was before they started (just an announcement of them on the horizon) or after many months of them already in action?
And is it just me or doesn't it seem like if they were going to ruin eBay they would have done so by now?
mr_lincoln
·5 months ago@gurlcat
I agree. Since it was launched (and announced in one of the monthly Seller publications) I have seen different reactions to it. eBay never makes a change like that on a whim. Apparently, there was enough complaining from Sellers NOT getting FB from Buyers that eBay implemented it. But that didn't happen overnight.
On one level eBay may be trying to adjust to a trend that has happened naturally with people not leaving FB for others. I think our society is worn out from everybody wanting to know how our "experience" was ... I mean I have postal clerks still circling the survey link at the bottom of postal receipts, when I make a purchase or payment I get a follow up "how was your experience" email or text or if I phoned in am asked if I would take a short survey at the end of the call. It is just too much and I think people are sick of it at this point.
I check FB from my Buyers from time to time and am often amazed at the number of them who have never leave FB for Sellers, the Left for others folder is empty.
I am of the opinion that eBay's FB system has morphed into something they never expected. There are seven (7) Help pages has some issues ... that is a bit overkill in my view.
gurlcat
·5 months ago@mr_lincoln Well hang on now, are you sure they REALLY never left it for others? There is a troubling (and I believe growing) glitch-or-something that many of us have noticed in the past year or so. Where a buyer's FB left for others does show a NUMBER they've left, and there are the appropriate number of pages at the bottom, but many of the actual comments are just missing. It appears totally random, like maybe page 1 will have only 3 comments, then page 2 will have none at al, then page 3 will be fully-populated with 25, etc.
And in some cases NONE of the comments show on any page.
And on the pages with none, it says 'This member has not left any feedback comments' but that's just not true!
Right now one of my auctions has 3 bidders that I'd sure like to know a little about, but can't because their FLFO pages are blank or nearly so.
This one for example, has left 1322 FLFO's, but not according to pages 1-6 (with 200 per page selected):
But then finally on page 7, yippie, I can see one actual FLFO. ONE.
Incidentally when these are visible, they are shown in true chronological order (no sorting options). So this buyer has been on a buying SPREE, if their oldest FLFO out of 1322 was in the past 6 months.
mr_lincoln
·5 months ago@gurlcat
I have seen that too but I will have to check for the ones where there is nothing there and no long list of pages.
gurlcat
·5 months ago@mr_lincoln Oh and to be very clear, automated feedback has nothing to do with this problem. It was occurring long before auto's started. And the number shown never reflects autos anyway, only real hand-written ones.
Wastingtime101's theory is that eBay is probably going to get rid of this feature altogether, so they're not tending to maintenance of it. I hope he's wrong .... but I bet he's right. In eBay's eyes, all it does is stop sellers from accepting offers from some buyers and/or cause sellers to cancel orders from shady-looking buyers. And there probably are sellers who are TOO easily spooked by seeing negs left by buyers. But my god, I sure would hate to never have any idea what ANY buyer is like.

I'm going to throw out a viewpoint that may or may not give you a different perspective on this, but who knows.
It seems that the biggest "gripe" some buyers might have with the system is that its leaving seller a positive when they feel they shouldn't get one. If that's the case, then leave your experience appropriately if you must, but don't seek to hurt a seller because you don't like the system.
Now, to expand on this point a moment:
My view of the automatic feedback is that its mostly worthless as a performance metric. For one thing you can hide them from the view, so you can ignore those.
My take though, is that perhaps the seller wasn't good enough to bother leaving a positive feedback? Maybe they didn't make enough of an impression?
But I also know that many buyers are simply lazy and aren't going to leave a feedback unless its negative to begin with, as then they have something to complain about or to vent about something.
Another fact to keep in mind. If there is any issue with the transaction at all, no feedback is going to get left.
This includes:
Not to mention, the buyer will ALWAYS have the option to leave whatever feedback they wish, including positive, neutral, and negative for up to 60 days after the transaction.
So before you think leaving a retaliatory feedback is a good idea, keep in mind how the transaction went and leave feedback appropriately, good or bad. Or don't and let the seller get the boring automated one that really doesn't mean anything, other than they completed the transaction.
I leave feedback if the seller impresses me, I might let the auto do it if the transaction was okay, and I will say something if they did something wrong. Its as simple as that.
So take a deep breath and relax, its not as bad as it seems.
😁
az93
·5 months agoYes, that's exactly what they say. Makes them easy to pick out. Only problem is sometimes I intentionally do not leave positive feedback, but eBay steps in and leaves it anyway.
soh.maryl
·5 months agoYes, eBay is leaving auto positive FB if it appears that the transaction went well.
If you do not agree with their assessment, you are free to leave neutral or negative to replace that auto feedback.

magnum1986
·5 months agoThere is a reason why I don't leave feedback at times. It is usually because the seller screwed up. Most of the time I don't want them to suffer from a negative review, so I don't provide any feedback at all.
And now Ebay just overrides MY decision by giving the seller a good feedback?! **bleep**!
Ebay is yet again screwing this platform up with every change!
Alright. From now on EVERY seller gets a negative feedback from me when they screwed up. As a matter of facts, I have one case open right now. Will get a negative out right now.
No more compromises from me. Say thanks to Ebay.
kibble-net
·5 months agoSorry to hear you had a bad experience here.
Here is a point of view from the other end - 90 to 95 percent of buyers don't bother leaving feedback, and it makes it difficult for sellers to build up a feedback score. It's especially difficult for new sellers to establish a reputation here when most transactions simply wouldn't count at all.
As a buyer you have never had the option to leave negative or neutral feedback for a seller revoked. But as a seller, we are restricted from leaving negative or neutral feedback to buyers.
I think this is a welcomed change. Not all may agree, but Ebay can't please everyone.
magnum1986
·5 months agoEbay is increasingly disappointing buyers with those changes and pushes - I had this discussion with several people, because at some point I too thought about selling my products on ebay. We are talking high 7 figure sales a year.
When buyers get pushed around they will stop buying in that shop or on that platform. My desire to keep buying on ebay has been going down. I used to love it 20 years ago.
Ebay is compensating by selling China crap much like Amazon. That will run its course too.
No buyers = no demand = no sellers. Never forget that.
soh.maryl
·5 months agoEven though eBay is now leaving auto FB for a transaction which appears to have gone well, the buyer is free to override that FB with his own remarks. You know that, right?
magnum1986
·5 months agoI don't have time for that nonsense. Also, the bad intent counts for me.
The entire feedback system was screwed up and manipulated by ebay. When I want to buy something, I check the feedback from the seller. I have to click through a bunch of nonsense before I finally get to see recent feedback.
Then there are countless offers from hacked and new accounts, offering new product at a fraction of the price, obviously being a scam. Thousands of people fall for this each week, yet when you report those scams, ebay's useless Ai system tells you that the offer is legit.
I could write DOZENS of examples how ebay screwed up a once great platform!
In the end, eBay can do whatever they want with their platform. And I'm going back to ordering from independent online shops and cut the middleman, aka ebay, out. FAFO

Got anything else useless to say?
soh.maryl
·5 months agoWhat nonsense is it that you don't have time for?
A question was asked, basically, if eBay was now leaving automatic FB for buyers if a transaction appears to have gone well.
My reply was that eBay now leaves auto FB for SELLERS if a transaction appears to have gone well, but not for buyers. Also pointed out that, if a buyer disagrees with eBay's evaluation, the buyer can override that B with their own.
Not sure why you found that offensive, but oh, well . . .

jonathanbrightlight

joycecooperjoyce
OP5 months agoI am a SELLER - perhaps I needed to put that in my query?
jonathanbrightlight
·5 months agoYes, it makes a difference as you've seen from the responses.
eBay will automatically provide feedback from buyers to sellers, though it is not displayed with any connection to the buyer's account on the feedback page (so it is not being misrepresented as being from that buyer), provided there are no issues identified with the order. That means that if it arrives on time, with tracking, and there is no cancellation request, no claim filed or case opened, and the buyer does not leave their own feedback, eBay will provide the generic feedback you've seen for those orders. If the buyer later decides to leave their own feedback, they are not shown that eBay left automated feedback and can leave their own feedback normally, and it will override the automated feedback.
eBay does not provide automated feedback from sellers to buyers, though they do offer sellers the option of automating feedback to their buyers if they choose. You can customize the feedback provided and give multiple options so they're not all identical if you choose, or you can choose to leave it not automated and only provide feedback to your buyers manually. If you do not provide feedback as a seller to your buyers, no feedback is provided at all for those orders.
Hopefully that helps clarify!

Yeah, I already knew that. Instead of dismissing the original post, I was simply going with maybe they had added a new feature in where auto feedbacks are going both ways. But I hadn't heard otherwise, or of any changes, so was being open minded is all.
As far as I knew, it has only been for sellers to get automated feedback from buyers, if the transaction went without any issues. And so far, it seems to still be this way, so the original post may have been mistaken it appears.
a_c_green
·5 months agoI may be wrong on that point, now that I think about it some more, as it's a given that buyers can only receive Positive feedback anyway, so there are no feedback percentage mathematics to get skewed by a calculation of one Negative against only a partial number of Positives.

·5 months ago@grann-4629 You keep saying this, and we keep explaining why it would be disastrous for eBay. It absolutely is not "meaningless." It helps avoid a lot more problems than it creates. -Helped me just last night, when I almost purchased something from a seller with a good price, but then read negatives from buyers who had problems after buying that exact thing from them. So I avoided that problem by buying from a different seller.

I have never read the feedback policy nor do I intend to, although I have used it on every purchase I have made. If it was to disappear, it would have zero effect on me. Please don't suggest I read it - I hate trying to wade through a bunch of CYA statements 🤓 I hope the policy clearly states the rules of who can do what and procedures to follow for removal.
I also hope sellers and buyers read them and understand them, but ....

The space in which I buy has a wide range of quality sellers – folks that have no clue what they’re doing, folks that grade very well, packaged very well, etc. And, I sell in a difficult category. At least from a grading standpoint. I like it that people can leave comments they give clues to other buyers about my items and how well I pack. So many of my competitors are lousy sellers – I like it that there is feedback that shows a real difference to buyers.
