Is ebay dead 2023
Yes. All of ebay's numbers are in the toilet. It has to do with bots, promoted listings, breaking the search function, and directly abusing sellers trust, and lying about all of these things on a regular basis. It's in such a way that I assume it's on purpose. eBay will be gone soon enough, just like it's customers. They will continue to bury your listings if you don't promote. They will rip away any views or attention your item gets monthly. They will keep charging you more money.
I for one LOVED all of the bots that were on eBay. I was getting non stop views, watchers, attention, and sales. It's been the complete opposite for a year or two. 0 views on an N64,an item that sells every day,and I used to sell one whenever listing one,no questions asked. I sell them locally all the time right now. Along with my 7 views no watchers on a Wii console. They sell in the hundreds every day of existence. I sell them locally constantly. All the things that ebay has done in an attempt to destroy the average seller is working great. Even if I list it again,it gets no views.
I have been able to struggle with rare antiques and make my money on eBay. But they were very pricey and rare.
The video game category has felt the brunt of all this, one of the largest money makers in the world today, especially on the internet...
But yes, since you searched " is ebay dead 2023", the answer is yes ,ebay is dead in 2023. I wouldn't make it your main thing, sell locally if possible and find other platforms

·2 years agoTo paraphrase what Frank Zappa said about Jazz in 1975: "Ebay's not dead, it just smells funny".
Sellers are hostile. Prices and shipping are hyperinflated. Add to this the Government having a death grip on both buyers and sellers with their completely dishonest "tax your grandma's moldy bloomers if you decide to sell them here" smash-and-grab tax policies. So yes. I am IN MOURNING for what used to be one of the GREATEST platforms and a critical survival tool for me and my family during the first two decades of my eBay membership. The platform might well be propped up by the very, very "well to do" and I acknowledge that eBay doesn't care where the money comes from, as long as it keeps coming in. But I'm priced and taxed out of this marketplace, both as a buyer and as a seller.

·2 years agoThievery and stealing is what will soon run me off EBay this year in near future. I can not tolerate the scams and bad policy for sellers. My bank protects me more and that’s crazy. Closing appeals with no input slowing sellers to keep your merchandise. I look back I must have been insane. It just didn’t catch up to me yet. That’s cool cause 2024 will not tolerate that style of commerce.

·2 years ago@carlmarxx According to ebay's own stats, Enthusiast buyers currently make up about 16% of the ebay buyer base, but they account for something like 70% of GMV. (which is pretty much in line with the Pareto Rule, which is 20/80). So, in other words, about 84% of buyers account for 30% of GMV.
ebay is primarily interested in increasing the number of Enthusiast Buyers and also increasing their average annual spend.
Many businesses market more heavily to their "High Value" buyers (the term ebay used to use for "Enthusiast buyers) than to their regular buyers. ebay is taking this further than most companies.

I recently talked to eBay in person at one of their booths at SEMA and no one even on a management's level could answer any of my business related concerns. From the rising rates to the HORRIBLE payment method re-confirmation process for your bank account. No one had answers to their e-commerc policy changes and why you couldnt just spend the funds that where released to you instead of having to deposit them into you account etc, like you used to be able to do with your paypal account. SINCE FOR NO RERASON they got rid of paypal all together. IT gets more and more convoluted the mor problems you have witht hem and no real answers. NOW they take 12% even if the bulk of the cost is for shipping the item. For people like me in Alaska that hits hard. ILL BE HAPPY WHEN THEY ANNOUCH THAT EBAY HAS COLLAPSED TREATING THEIR CUSTOMERS LIKE **bleep**.......

·2 years agoSINCE FOR NO RERASON they got rid of paypal all together.
EBay did not get rid of PP.
They were forced into it by vulture capitalist Carl Icahn.
When the relationship was ended (and Icahn took the money he harvested selling his shares) eBay realized they had a chance to update their system, get rid of some persistent problems with fraudsters and hijackers, and start getting the fees on payment processing the PP branch was now keeping.
This second of those two results is why there have been so many posts complaining about difficulty in registering for Managed Payments, and fewer complaints about hijacked buyer and seller accounts.

·2 years agoJupiter_collectibles (mesage 83) is correct. I wonder why anybody with good business on eBay even worries about ever looking up messages like "eBay is dead"? What's the point? Are they paid eBay trolls? It feels like they are.
I suspect eBay's algorithm picks random sellers who do not perform or perform below their secret mark and bury them deep under. This is why you get some sellers with steady sales and others with zero sales.
To me, eBay is: a dry desert with an occasional tumbleweed passing by. One could say so sell water. Sounds like a good idea. Now tell me, how many townies will travel to the desert to buy freaking water? eBay is an illusion.

I don't think you know eBay. I don't know how old you lot (again I'm sticking you ina group, sorry) are but I doubt you can remember when few eBay ads had pictures (few people had cameras). When eBay was purely auctions, there were no buy-it-nows, highest bids etc.

·2 years ago@stuffyoulikealot The red highlighted phrase above pretty much parrots my experience. Since the beginning of 2022 when PLA was fully launched and the Views counting changed sales began to decline.
In the last 18 months ONLY 2 have set new sales records ... and October isn't looking much better either.
BIN sales are lagging way behind and to your point about Promoting, the ONLY campaign I ran in the last year where a PLS campaigned performed well (like they did prior to 2022) is because I jacked up my ad rates as a test ... I used to sell 2-3 items per day on a 30 day PLS ... then in 2022 that dropped below 1.5 ... then my Test PLS with a rate HIGHER than eBay's suggested rates put me beck in the 2-3 sales per day range. But giving away that extra money pushed profits for those items below my target margin ... not good.
At present, Selling on eBay is not sustainable for many Sellers ... sell through rate has extended out to AT LEAST twice what it once was.
The site's thrust for high end luxury items, sneakers, jewelry, purses, high value items, etc. and using PLA for competing for the top spots on a returned search has ruined the normal search algorithms for Sellers in other categories ... IMHO. And while I say this is my opinion I know from my own declining sales there must be some truth in it ...

·3 years agoLowering prices to a bare minimum or even beyond it (such as selling at or below cost)is wrong strategy. You will make much less money and will have to work a lot of overtime just to make ends meet while sales will not increase much, because the cause of economic crisis is not pricing, but inflation, grocery price and living cost increases causing consumers to spend less on "luxury" goods and collectables. Especially damaging to any industry is selling at or below cost. The one who does this thinks they will outsmart others, but not for long. This kind of strategy is very damaging to everyone incluidng the one who's doing it. Soon consumers will realize low prices means items of no value, not worth purchasing and collecting. The long term solution is to CONTINUE SPENDING, keep on spending, to prevent a disaster to your own business and your job loss down the road. Imagine if everyone stopped spending, that would create an unprecedented crisis and destroy the economy for many decades and even centuries to come. It is very important to continue spending as you did for as long as you can. Keep your business and hobby alive.

There are lots of people making lots of money out there.
People don't come to the boards complaining that they're doing well.
People come to the boards and complain they their sales are slow.
Think about this....
If you were selling the exact same things at the exact same prices as a seller who is consistently making $100,000 a month on ebay, would your sales be slow?
How about if I concede to this, ebay IS dead, for some of us.

·3 years agoeBay IS DEAD !!!! YES !!!!
After 23 years on eBay ( and do not look only to this account profile... ) Worked for years for others as well selling with shooting star accounts... eBay wants to become the new Amazon, they want you to sell sneakers and shirts... all the pioneers that made eBay have been put aside. They care only for their shareholders. I saw the evolution of eBay, they never stopped making bad decisions one after another over the last couple of years. They killed themselves. Selling Paypal was a huge mistake as well. What made eBay alive was collectibles ! And now they do not care anymore about collectible sellers, that's it... simple as that.
Others can try to argue that their business is good on eBay, ebay staff can comment with an account just created for that purpose with 1-5 feedback... LoL What a mess they made with their platform. So disappointed with them. I had at some point an anchor store subscription. I downgraded it to Premium, I created my own website, without paying for any adds and guess what, It happened more than once that I got more sales ( even for a couples of hundreds of dollars ) in a weekend when I did $20 of sale on eBay ( including shipping... and I did not steal my items, I had to pay for it of course so... )
You want to tell me otherwise, well you're never gonna convince me. Sorry ! This is the end for the collectible world on eBay, I tell you...
Good luck to all.

·3 years agoAbsolutely dead for me as well. Gotta be very niche if you want to sell anything it seems and even then you'll get problems.
Thankfully another classifieds site i sell on is seeing steady growth after they implemented mobile payments which made it so much easier to sell and buy, on top of that our postal service made shipping cheaper on a national basis for smaller packages. Oh and the site is free to use, connected to the bank and social security number so no chargebacks or returns a month later. Buyers have a window of 1 day to make a return. Feedback goes both ways so easy to see if you are dealing with shady people and thus protect yourself.
ebay will have to give sellers some slack if they want to remain competitive, the monopoly they once had is falling apart thanks to their short-sighetedness. We are seeing markets pop up left and right which are specific for the items in question and in todays social media age it is not hard to gain traction.
Will ebay change? I have not seen anything that would indicate them making it easier and cheaper for sellers, rather i am certain they will make it more difficult.
Quite fascinating to observe in real time actually. Many of the youtubers i follow are diversifying at the moment.. they see the writing on the wall.

Just like that super model may look ultra skinny & unattractive to me; someone else probably thinks she is gorgeous. For myself, personally, eBay has become next to useless. To someone else, it is a money-making machine. That is not great for me. It does not help me in any way. For 20 years, I was selling the right things & now, during the last 1 1/2 years, I'm selling the wrong things? Give me a break! I'm not selling more because I have a lack of exposure. Period. People in this community cannot accept anyone saying it's eBay's fault. Of course it is! It is NOT a conspiracy that eBay interferes with how people do business on their site. Just accept the fact that some of us struggle & it is a legitimate reason. If you think everyone should be successful on eBay & it is only the seller(s) fault, time to check reality. Sorry - I don't have 1980s toys to sell. No $10 banknotes for $5. No old or new video games that are worth $$$. No gold for 60% of market value. ·3 years ago@sakic92710 Because IT IS NOT. Please stop making excuses and blaming Ebay for something totally under YOUR control. You are the seller so it is up to YOU to make changes: lower prices, change inventory etc. Do whatever you have to do to get that buyer to want your item.

theteamsetguy
·3 years ago@sakic92710 ,
There's also not billions of items on FB. A good measure of how popular your items are on eBay is by looking at the number of impressions your items are getting. Every time your item one of your items comes ups in a search it is counted as an impression.
Your goal as a seller is to get the item to come up on the first page of the search results. Most buyers will not got to the second page to look at results. How do you do that?
1. Competitive price your items. A lot of buyers search by "Lowest price"
2. Have a high conversion rate. Ebay likes sellers with high conversion rates meaning if a buyer takes a the next step to click and VIEW your item there's a better chance of it selling. Also, usually sellers with LOWER prices have higher conversion rates. Good pictures and good detailed item descriptions will also increase conversion rates. Many sellers complain they are not getting any "VIEWS". It is up to the seller to give the buyer to "View" your item versus your competitors. Ebay can give a seller a million impressions but if the seller doesn't have a competitive prices or good pictures the buyer isn't going to take the next step to "View" the sellers item. Sellers need to get the buyers to take the next step after being shown the their item by clicking their mouse on their item to "VIEW" it.
3. Complete all relevant items specifics.
4. Good title for your items
linus.hux72fe
·3 years agoI dont want to get into this old argument but there is a middle ground here that the sides seem unwilling to acknowledge.
Yes, many times a PART of the problem is the seller-choice of goods, changing consumer tastes, incorrect pricing, incorrect shipping, poor photos or listing habits, inflated expectations, and human error etc.
But I also believe Ebay is part of the problem. Just off the top of my head:
1. Failing to recognize the importance of quality, directed, consistent, and timely Advertising.
2. Failing to provide an easy to use, accurate, consistent, and intuitive search that can be done without checking many additional boxes or "learning the 'correct' way to search."
3. Failing to maintain a fresh look.
4. Failing to thoroughly test updates prior to launching the updates.
5. Failing to prevent or at times quickly correct glitches.
6. Failing to recognize too much foreign junk listed on the site is a major source of dissatisfaction for consumers and causes problems for Ebay as well. (INR, clogged searches, incorrect listing categories,-in my experience vintage clothing and jewelry are just awful to shop for example-one seller has over 400 listings all the time and none are vintage as well has over 250 negatives for INR on average. It's been that way for 3+ years.)
This fight wouldn't be continuing for years if their was some recognition of the person's points and concerns rather than snark and hubris by both sides.
I dont know when this country decided one side must be all wrong so the other side can be all right. Is compromise dead?
Now before one of you responds that we cant do anything about Ebays decisions and actions, while that's true, it is also true that people sometimes need to express their viewpoint and frustration and arent asking for you to solve or correct Ebays actions.
As to the question "Is Ebay dead?" My answer would be it's old and tired but not dead, yet. I took 6 months off listing and just didnt really miss it. I did a bunch of shows large and small as well as focused my listing time elsewhere. Yes I am once again listing here but that is because my current primary sales areas are all caught up.
Sadly while I was focused elsewhere 3 of my favorite sellers of antiques and primitives have stopped selling here.
Best everyone!

You do comprehend what this number means?
Simply put: The amount of merchandise that has been sold on Ebay has fallen 17% in 2 years.
So when sellers complain about slow sales? They have all the proof they need in Ebay's own numbers.
When sellers get on here to brag about their "great" sales? Hooray for them.
They're an exception to the trending decline.
For now.
Not my problem that they're not bright enough to see it.
sakic92710
·3 years agoThe people who have 'great' sales are in these groupings :
1. They have 50,000 listings; are a business & have 8 employees steadily posting for them, sorting, mailing, etc. & get anywhere from 600-1000 sales a month. Good for them.
2. Someone who thinks of it as a hobby & wants extra cash. They have 600 listings; get $300-400 per month on 25 sales & are thrilled with that.
3. Someone who doesn't buy to resell but, picks things around the household; gets 3 sales a week & just likes unloading 'stuff.'
If you can think of anyone else who isn't desperate for sales & thinks any incoming cash is awesome, just tack on to the list. lol
The people who come here with their complaints, like I do, are work-alone individuals who are relying on a measly few $100 a week to survive in this sh***y world of greed & money hoarding. A world where the rich just add to their stockpiles of cash & are not happy until they soak every nickel out of society. This also includes banks & government officials wanting to line their own pockets. Trying to get ahead on a site whose ever changing policies & systems ONLY add to the hardship. Hope I cheered everyone up! lol Good luck to all. 🙂

·3 years agoEbay has one simple, stark metric they release every quarter that states EXACTLY how sales are doing on Ebay.
It's called GMV.
And it is simply the amount of merchandise sold on Ebay that quarter.
In dollars.
GMV doesn't care about your personal opinions of how Ebay sales are doing.
The numbers state that Ebay's sales are down almost 17% over the last 2 years.
That's an average across all categories for all sellers.
So when sellers come on here to say sales are down on Ebay?
They're right.

·3 years agoGotta say something here...
When I hear someone respond to a long-time seller who is clearly seeing a downward trend with "my sales are good, great, steady..etc", I cringe a little. Why? Because one's sales are relative to one's personal expectations based on any number of factors. If you are a hobby seller, or perhaps just received your eBay seller wings, then the sky is the limit. We're excited for you.
But, when a long time, traditional eBay reseller enters the room and says "something is wrong", you might want to listen, learn, and prepare to adjust your expectations for the future, instead of negating his concerns.

What a particular collector buys at any time varies based on many factors
How much money do they have this month
What they already own
What other choices for their spending exist beyond your offers.
This is the heart of summer. There are vacations, there are flea markets and other outdoor sales venues.
There have been some major collections liquidated at auction in some areas of collectibles.
There are a lot of other sellers who are hungry and dropping their prices.
There are buyers feeling financial pain which earlier times when selling collectible items dropped substantially.
My sales are off but I have a more diverse assortment of items than other similar sellers, and do not list items which do not meet my personal criteria for extent of competition or acceptable price. ·3 years agoHey ! eBay changed the way you get your visibility this year. Now, not only you pay for your store ( which was giving you all the visibility needed in the good years... ) then they started as you know to make you pay if you wanted to be really visible with your entire store listings on other eBay sites such as eBay UK, eBay European network, Australia site etc.... Then started the system pushing you to promote. The more you add additional % of fees to pay them, the more visibility you get... and they follow that path to be more and more greedy for their shareholders.... Now this year, as for the Google model, if you wish to get more visibility and to be higher in the eBay search engine pages, again, you need to pay extra... So at the end, the store, the promotion, now this... how much % would we need to give to them to get stable visibility ? 50% ???? People think that eBay is still charging 12.5 %... depends on the categories but over that you have to count your monthly store fees on top of that and additional promotion fees if you use it... at the end, the reality is more like 18-20% ( this without paying to promote... so )
For a big platform, the reality is: as soon as they have shareholders, the good customer service is gone... people at the top of the chain are establishing the rules over the first responders from the customer support department.... ( OH, I know where you come from.... we are sorry, we do understand your concern... bla, bla, bla.... )
People from some other big platform like E.t*s*y.y have shareholders now and sellers are complaining for the last 3-5 years now.... customer service has dropped a lot...
Simple as that... Now if you are not part of the big ones, there is no room to make a living really for small and medium companies with eBay. And to make $50 000, you would need to sell at least around $300 000 so a lot of money, what a lot of people cannot afford.
Good luck Sir !

·3 years agoNo, eBay is not dead.
You need to sell better, more desirable, quicker selling items. The majority of the items you have listed are not desirable or quick selling by any means. They require a niche of niche buyer that is willing to pay the price you have listed. The categories you're selling in are slow moving & non desirable by most unless they are the niche of the niche in that category.
I sell in what most people say is a saturated category and I average 12 sales per day. Except that in my category when you break it down, the "saturated" part is the majority of what doesn't sell because it's non desirable, slow moving, priced to high etc...
You need to find items that have a fast sell thru rate that you can buy low and sell at a good margin/a margin that you are comfortable with.
If you continue trying to sell what you've been selling then don't expect to get the same results you may have gotten a decade ago selling the same types of items.
eBay is far from being "dead" and isn't going anywhere anytime soon despite what most people say, in my opinion anyway.
Take ownership, adapt to change, stop worrying about things out of your control & do better.
Good Luck.

·3 years agoHave you been to a Dollar Store ? There are very few items for one dollar. if everything in the store was really one dollar they would be out of business. It's a great name because it lures people into the store.

·3 years agoDollar store…
I went into a dollar store on my block’s corner because it has been hazy hot & very humid 90degrees here lately & I have history of fainting in such weather. Fainted maybe 30x in 25 years and didn’t want to try making it 5 blocks to the supermarket where I always buy my laundry detergent for $5.50.
I was shocked dollar store charged $8.00 for exact same identical product!
Got angry but didn’t buy it!
Waited for next cool very early morning where I made Kamikaze raid on supermarket to get it!
Dollar store here rip off…

·3 years agoYou need to sell better, more desirable, quicker selling items.
Which often means paying more for your inventory, and making less profit.
It also means higher risk of holding unsaleable merchandise when your Ebay buyers move from novice collectors to mid-level collectors to advanced collectors.
Better and quicker selling are often unrelated characteristics. There are fewer buyers who can afford the very best, and sales are often slow but highly profitable.
I wish there were simple answers.

·2 years agoThis is a good advertising response for ebay. I don't think it helps folks. I have an entire garage of antique books, art, autographs etc. I made no real sales in three months & ebay buried my store with one review that was a lie. I had over 500 good reviews that didn't matter. I contacted ebay. No response. I don't think ebay has any real workforce behind the name, so sellers die. I will be okay, but many will not.

·2 years agoIf everyone sold the most popular items that move on ebay, than those items would go down the drain, because competition would bring down the profits margins down, and the market would be for bottom feeders, you see they have us running after are own tails, and after a while you get dizzy, and drop.stop play there game.play your own game.

·2 years agoeasy to sell goodwill rejects for $7.00 but you won't last long selling that junk. the smell and condition will doom you. Been there done that 10 years ago. my anchor store sells 1300 items a day. I have 13 employees and amazon is what pays the bills the 1300 items on ebay make the light bill be paid. amazon is where you want to sell if you are a seller. but what I see here and read here NONE of you folks are sellers. just closet sellers that the IRS will introduce to capital gains tax, since your hobby business is not allowed to write off expenses. the new bidennomics

·3 years agoHi @stuffyoulikealot
I don't know whether this will be good or bad news to you ... but to paraphrase Mark Twain: "The rumor of eBay's death is greatly exaggerated." [I believe I've been seeing posts about it for at least 18 years.]

·3 years agoYeah....
"The rumor of K-Mart's death is greatly exaggerated."
"The rumor of Enron's death is greatly exaggerated.
"The rumor of Lehman Brothers's death is greatly exaggerated."
"The rumor of JC Penny's/ Bed Bath & Beyond/ Hertz/ Compaq/ Circuit City / Texaco's / death is greatly exaggerated."
Thinking that Ebay's management is somehow immune from destroying their own platform with poor decision making is naive.
And in many cases such as Enron, Bear-Stearns, and Lehman Brothers, they hid their inner rot right up to the time they collapsed by artificially propping up their stock.
But, by all means....carry on.

·3 years agoI have been having great sales within a week. Don't know what I did. I don't use promoted listings anymore.
I looked at some of your listings....and also those that are sponsor on the same page. The sponsor items are less expensive than your items on the same page. So, I think you might have overpriced your items compared to other similar items your are selling.
I try to stay within the same price or lower with competitors.

·3 years agoIt is dead for "some" sellers. It is about the same for "some" sellers. It is very good for "some" sellers. It all depends on the item, the asking price, and the demand. Being a low volume seller, I am very happy with my last 90 day results (85 items shipped in 90 days) too me is very good. Maybe take another look at your prices. They look VERY high for Ebay. Compare to SOLD listings and adjust accordingly.

·3 years agoGlad you branched out locally. First year I have searched for local options as well. Refuse to ship large items for fear of forced return. The standards and rules have for sure driven buyers and sellers away. eBay has long since repelled their antiques and collectables sellers. eBay killed the art market a couple of years back by changing the search engine. Heck, my items were getting banned for listing nude artwork. Thousands of years of nude art being part of history yet king eBay decides what is considered descent. Oh well, eBay's loss. Brought the nudes to local art auctions and have done pretty well.

·3 years agoDo I think ebay is dead? No.
Do I think multi channel---continuing on ebay, but adding other channels as well---is a good idea for at least some sellers? Yes.

·3 years agoThe AI bots must've been self-aware, had fat wallets and been some major horders, because they were buying up a storm...where the bleep did they store this stuff.
A post from last week got it right:
Ebay attempted to reconcile bot views versus actual human views due to the imfamous, impending pay per click model. But, they tweaked things too much. As many of us know, we often have solds on items with no views.
