Is anyone else annoyed by this UI workflow "feature"?

The Item Specifics section in the Listing workflow allows you to add details about your item - this is great. In most cases you select your item's characteristics using a dropdown control and a prompt to search or enter your own. The annoyance (for me) is when I need to "enter my own value" .. you have to type in the value AND select the value you just typed by clicking on the plus sign or the checkbox, and it's really easy to NOT do the selecting part, then the list closes, and you have to retype the value. I know it probably sounds dumb, but I do this all the time and it annoys me. I'd prefer to have the dropdown assume that when I enter my own value that I want to use it.
