ironic situation when phasing out inventory
I have about 2 weeks left for my store subscription to end and I delete all my FP listings. Just over 1700 now. I've removed quite a lot of FP books and DVDs to lot up (lke Osprey military books).
By not listing for about 3 weeks I expected sales to peter out but I"m looking at one of my best weeks in a long time. For one thing I am accepting just about any offer and just left bargain basement offers on about 25 books. Might as well get something versus the possibility of having to pay to have the books taken away (but not before I have people here buying what they want by the box).
I'm also accepting offers on some auctions but that is business as usual, not really deeply discounted. Two offers were for asking price and $7 over asking price. Go figure.

Ironic ... or somewhat expected?

OP4 months agotrue in part but a bunch of sales that weren't from offers either by buyers or me. Even some not covered by my current sale.

·4 months agoThe way the search works here, sales beget sales.

OP4 months agoI always thought it was listing that generates sales so I expected them to fall off due to not listing anything but auctions these days.

·4 months agoSales also generate sales. The way this type of search works is that a sale will raise a cohort of similar items in search - this isn't some secret algorithm, it's just how this type of search works. For instance, I'll sell a computer mouse, then get three more sales of computer mice. This may happen because I list a lot of mice all at once, or it may happen because I sold a mouse and suddenly the other mice that have been sitting in my store get a temporary boost in search and I'll sell at least another one right away, even if it has been listed for quite a while.

Someone is trying to convince you to cancel closing the store and I think it's eBay.😀

·4 months agoBook buyers are a pretty safe lot. If it were selling high end jewellery, electronics, luxury, etc., then it would be a whole different scenario.

·4 months ago@keziak Did you see I sent you a PM yesterday?

OP4 months agoI'm not sure, did I write back? I think maybe I did but do not recall what I may have said. Probably the opposite of this thread knowing me.

·4 months ago@keziak No, it was about your Depression glass that you mentioned in another thread. It was only yesterday that I wrote you (in private messages, not in that thread).
keziak
OP4 months agoHmm, did I respond? Sad that I can't remember a private message a day ago.

·4 months ago@keziak No you didn't respond. I don't think it's that you don't remember but you just haven't read it yet. But it's still there. Do you know how to get to private messages? It's the little envelope icon in the top-right of the screen, next to the notification bell.

·4 months agoThat's where volume really helps - it extends the effective time of markdowns.

OP4 months agoCan you explain what you mean? that sales work better the more listings you have?
I am starting to cave in a little in the sense of maybe buying the store for JUne to see if I can move more books. My absolute hard deadline is July though. Hubby doesn't want to be home when I have strangers here to go through the books, assuming I find any on Marketplace. He is sort of OK with me doing this when he's out of town in late July. If I have people in as soon as he leaves I will have 10 days to wrap things up.
I often see MP ads for "we'll pick up your books for free!". I left a message for the only one I still saw, who is supposedly in this town but no response. The ad was pretty old. Why doesn't he take it down if out of that business?
I am reaping the benefits now of not listing FP. I spend maybe an hour some days listing auctions. Otherwise it's only the mail since I don't spend time scouting anymore. I do miss the fun of finding books to sell.

·4 months agoThe more you have on markdowns (and the more variety you have), the longer it it takes to exhaust your sale because of the time it takes for more people to find you on search. With my little store, a sale might be good for maybe a week, if that. When I had 600 items (the most I've had when I was doing this full time), I could run a sale that would pretty much take a couple of weeks to peter out.

OP4 months agoI'm running a sale but also giving steep discounts for books on watch lists. Just want them gone.

·4 months agoThat sounds so strange to me. My husband would want to be home if I'm having strangers in to look at something.
keziak
OP4 months agoThat makes sense but.....different folks I guess.

·4 months agoSounds like you are on the right track. Allowing "best offer" if a good way for you to get rid of your books. At least you will make your money back and hopefully get a some profit.
