invitation for research interview
The other day I mentioned on a thread that decades ago I was flown to Ebay headquarters to sit on a panel and remarked that these days it would be Zoom.
So what happened but I got an email inviting me to participate in a Zoom interview. Unfortunately I have never used Zoom before. They are even paying $100 via a VISA gift card.

·8 months agoI had never done Zoom calls before until this past year. The eBay mentor meetings are through Zoom and this was keeping me from attending. One of the other mentors walked me through it. Easy peasy! I bought a little camera that sits on top of my monitor and the computer already had a microphone. My cat loves walking by the camera and everyone loves seeing him!

·8 months agoJust don't let any family members schlep nekkid past you (I've participated in a lot of Zoom and Teams meetings. The things I've seen).

·8 months agoBe aware that what is behind you if you are on camera will also be on view. So, do as many others do and replace your copies of Mad Magazines with Caro’s The Power Broker (ideally with the cover facing out). That will establish your intellectual bona fides to the rest of the participants.

·8 months ago@keziak Zoom should be easy enough to use even if you're unfamiliar with it. You don't even have to install the app, it should work right in your browser, though I guess if you had a computer without a camera and no smartphone or tablet (I think I remember you being one that didn't, though if you do that's an easy device to use Zoom with), that might be an issue.

OP8 months agoI think what I have is an older PC with no camera, a laptop which I don't know, and a droid phone.

·8 months ago@keziak, you don't need a camera to participate in a zoom meeting. Without one, you will still be able to see the meeting presentation, they just won't be able to see you. But most of the participants will not be visible anyway, just whoever is talking/presenting at the moment.
As long as your PC has a speaker and microphone, you will be able to hear and speak in the meeting. But a lot of the time in Zoom meetings, they mute most of the participants to keep the ambient noise level down, and to prevent people from inadvertently interrupting whoever is presenting at the time.
You should go for it, and give it a try! Just keep your expectations on the low end, because even if they try to allow all participants to speak, in my experience, a few more outgoing participants tend to dominate the conversation.
One thing with Zoom (or conference calls in general) is that only one person "online" can speak at a time. One person's voice is broadcast, and when that happens, everyone else's voice is muted automatically. So the people listening, and the one who is talking, may never realize that someone else was trying to speak as well.

OP8 months agoSo I guess what I need to find out is if the laptop has a microphone. thanks!

·8 months agoIt would have to be a very old laptop indeed to not have a microphone, or probably a camera, unless there are models I'm not familiar with that are missing those. I suspect you'd be fine, and you can likely use the Android phone you mentioned instead if needed!

·8 months agoI suggest that you look up "Zoom Tutorial" on Youtube, it's easier than you think.

·8 months agoWhy is that "unfortunate"? And is it unfortunate for you, or for eBay?

OP8 months agoUnfortunate in that it looks like it could be interesting but I've never zoomed. Could be a reason to finally join the present century.
