Incredible idea to actually make ebay comps and suggested prices actually useful.
I am sure most of you have either made listings and had a suggested price pop up, along with a percentage of those that were free shipping. You also get the same thing when using the research tab.
The sheer fact that they are mixing free shipping data and pay shipping data makes that information almost worthless. The lower the true value of the item or the heavier the item the more worthless that data becomes.
There are two extremely easy ways to fix that. Split the data into free shipping and paid shipping or calculate the shipped price (either to the seller's location or to a static location such as the ebay international hub in Chicago).
That would actually make that information useful. I imagine simply splitting into average free ship and average pay ship would be much easier to both implement and much less processor intensive, and more useful to most sellers.

·1 year agoHaving been involved in buying and selling since close to the beginning, I take Ebay sales prices with a grain of salt.
They have always been highly volatile, condition dependent and biased by the differing knowledge, experience and listing skills of the sellers. Not to mention the seller desperation for the money to pay their bills.
They often are lower than the sales history or higher than the sales history on other sites.
Reporting the mean sales price often masks the true value of the item because of the stupid factor. (Both buyer and seller stupidity).

OP1 year agoWhile I totally agree with you, splitting off "free shipping" would make the data much better, particularly on the research tab where it is possible to fine tune your search and options so precisely that you can filter out most of the incorrect hits.
