Inability to respond to responses to my own comment re: ebay fee increase
I find it odd that either comments are turned off for the original post from ebay or my ability to respond to my comment has been turned off with the outrageous claim that it is due to me not confirming my email address after having used it for YEARS NOW and the fact that it is INDEED CONFIRMED. Just seems as though the folks here dont like to hear any of the pushback on outrageously high fees. I pay on average about 22% in fees alone. NOT including packaging costs that to date I have chosen to cover as a benefit to my customers in a time of avoidable inflation that we as sellers and consumers have no control over. Am I the only one who feels this way? As an example of what I would have liked to respond to was a comment that pointed out how I only charge for the actual postage cost instead of ripping off my customers and charging more than the actual amount. Reason should be obvious, but perhaps being honest is a dying characteristic or perhaps it was never there in the land of resale and I am the fool for trying to make it popular?

Other than the fact that some categories have different final value fees than others the fee structure is not complicated or difficult to calculate.

Complain all you want. Ebay doesn't mind.
You either accept the fees and sell here or don't accept the fees and don't sell here.
I pay on average about 22% in fees alone.
You are paying 13.25%. Anything more than that is a EXPENSE not a FEE.

Thats the truth, op's sometimes overestimate the importance of their posts about Ebay.

We've resigned to hearing of the pushback; we've committed to the fees. Big difference in the two.
Am I the only one who feels this way?
No... search the mountains of "outrageously high fees" posts.

Here's where we part company. I profit a tiny bit on shipping, considering my time, supplies, etc... but I never, ever rip off.
... and I am the fool for trying to make it popular?
No, you're an idealist. And it takes all kinds of kinds. I lean a bit toward realist, it appears.
Whatever you decide to revisit, I hope things turn up for you. Good luck.

OP2 years agoWell to profit off of shipping is deceptive charges in my opinion and I personally dont do that. Thats is certainly where we differ and I assume less profit for the benefit of knowing I offer the best fair service to my customers whether they know it or not. Stupidest thing Ive never quite aligned with was the idea of a handling charge when the seller is in charge of the item price to begin with. If you intend to add extra over the top fees on shipping, I would just ask, why not just add that amount to the upfront cost of the item rather than kinda hiding it in overage charge on shipping. It confuses many who dont expect to have to pay more for something other than the price of the item (which many assume that you already built in your time cost). adding your time to the shipping and adding your packaging fees and such to the shipping charge in this respect in my opinion is deceptive. why all the stupid fees on EVERYTHING just to bump up profit, KNOWING that is just a tactic to slip in a higher cost. You know it, I know it....its a slimey business tactic to upcharge what should ordinarily be built in the the price of the item. Or perhaps I just have a superior business pricing model structured around morals and clarity. The less math a customer has to do to figure out what the actual final cost of the item is that they purchase, in my opinion is worth the cost to me to be as open and honest and upfront about what I am pricing my items for. When you buy say a 5$ item and you get to the point of submitting payment and it asks for 12$...thats the no. 1 turn off I have to any purchases I make. I prefer to have all the costs built into the item price and keep postage as postage as the actual cost. Everyone who adds more to the cost of postage than the postage costs...knows they are doing this only to upcharge and therefor it is a bit deceptive, if they are honest with themselves. Shipping and handling is the stupidest obvious upcharge that was only drummed up by a greedy individual that figured out how to hide a little extra profit.

OP2 years agobefore you lecture me on how business finances work....let it be known that I went to school for both business and accounting, so the double talk to my standard of pricing doesnt register with me. I can only double down on the, YOU AND I BOTH KNOW WHAT YOURE DOING when you upcharge for shipping and handling.

OP2 years agoIT DOESNT HAVE TO BE SO COMPLICATED WHEN IT COMES TO PRICING!!! The only reason for the complication of added fees everywhere is ONLY intended for up charging and adding profit which could be added to the price of the product initially, but people have figured out that if you just tack on these extra fancy worded fees you can easily confuse people, especially the elderly to pay more for an item than they would had they had a more clear view of the actual cost to begin with. Sometimes putting a simple concept into understandable words is more challenging than it should be. That says something about society in a whole and its slimey.

OP2 years agoexample...why would someone who claims to offer a special discount if you purchase shipping labels from them, tack on a fee to buy such postage, which takes away from that saving they claim to offer and just confuse and make the water murky on the actual discount they receive. Ebay can offer a discounted shipping due to the volume of sales they provide to the shipping companies. Its a you scratch my back Ill scratch yours and to add fees to the cost of shipping you charge a customer...that charge is pure profit and has no other purpose. That fee does not pay for ebays expense to provide the postage. If you believe that to be the case I would ask you explain to me how....oh POS sales and the fee the carriers charge....bla bla bla, no it doesn't have to be like that as its a mutual benefit collaboration in which the only one being taken advantage of is the customer. Any honest accountant knows this simple fact.

·2 years agoa little upcharge for some is business 101............. your opinion of that may vary
I did not go to business school.
I just know how to add to see if I am making money or losing money.
Paying "fees" on shipping, and not covering at least part of that cost is not in my "business model". YMMV
Buyer sees what the total cost will be. They have to option to use the back button.
On eBay the idea for me is to make as much profit as I can on an item, not to see how many friends I can make. eBay is business. YMMV

·2 years agoThere is no fee charged for purchasing shipping labels.
a_c_green
·2 years agoTrue. I think what the OP is referring to is that eBay's Final Value Fee is charged on the buyer's full payment, so if you're charging the buyer for shipping, the FVF for this payment to you includes a percentage of your shipping charge.
It's kind of a roundabout argument, as the fee is not charged at label purchase time; it was already charged (in effect) at buyer payment time. Conversely, if you're offering the buyer Free Shipping, there is no portion of the FVF being attributed to the postage, regardless of whether you then purchase the label via eBay or anywhere else.

I noticed some of your previous posts are on the Mentor board. Only select members can respond to those posts. I would assume that the original posters can reply to their own posts, but I am not sure.
As far as fees go, in order to even push 22%, a sellers account would have to be below standard or rated as very high in Seller Metrics for INAD returns or INR cases.
I never see anything above 13.25% or thereabouts and some of my items are at 9% due to the category.
How are you managing to pay 22%?
thebohemianvagabond
OP2 years agoI am referring to my total sales cost minus packaging. That would include the shipping I buy from ebay with the additional fee ebay charges on shipping above the price I pay for the shipping plus final value and what ever other sales fees. It averages 22% plus whatever other cost for packaging which is quite expensive on its own even for decent cardboard or envelopes. OR....perhaps I am just doing it wrong on am too committed to making sure my customers get a good deal. Its hard for me to sale something for more than I believe its some ballooned price just because of artificial inflation even it that means I am sometimes taking a loss. Im a bit different though when it comes to my intentions selling here as most the time I develop some sort of relationship with my customers and it usually ends up more like the passing down of family heirlooms and all Ive got to do is decide who gets what.
