In order to sell on eBay I have to provide personal banking info? That's a deal breaker for me.
It's been a while since I sold on eBay. I don't like giving eBay my banking info. Paypal or a credit card would be okay, but not my banking info.

Giving banking info to eBay = Bad
Giving banking info to PayPal = Acceptable
Giving banking info to PayPal when eBay owned PayPal = Acceptable.

You can get a EIN number from the IRS and use that instead of your Social Security number.

You bet they will, and the state doesn't make it easy, either. I am going through this right now with some unclaimed money with my name on it. Believe me, they don't just hand over the money; they want all kinds of documents and personal information. It's a long, drawn-out process, not quick and easy. Not fun.

·1 year agoAny chance the eBay money processor will wind up the same way?
mam98031
·1 year ago@Anonymous
NONE. As I've repeatedly said to you there are Federal Laws that ALL Money processors have to deal with. It seems very important to you to make it seem like something it isn't.
What is your goal? Clearly you don't want to learn the truth as you keep tossing that out the window to post nonsense. So what is it that you are after? Scaring others that may not know the rules like some of us that are trying to correct this stuff you spout off with? Is it your goal to hurt others?

In any case, judging from some of Adyen's other clients shown here:

·1 year agoI thought you can sell a few things before they nab you to enter more personal info?
Then if you don't the money you earn eventually goes to the state treasury the person is in. Later maybe 8 months to a year he can claim that from treasury.
Problem solve 🤣😂🤣😂

No. Ebay is our Money Processor now. Without the information they can't process the money to the seller. They just have no way of doing that without the information. Plus Ebay now must adhere to the laws that control Money Processors. Both Federal and state laws.
You are talking about escheatment. When the Money Processor can not process the funds after a certain period of time to the seller, they then send it off to the seller's state to their unclaimed funds department. The seller will then have to check with that state department and then apply to get the funds. That is a whole new process for the seller and they will have to prove that is their money.

Each state has their requirements.

If you choose not to sell on eBay because of the way your earnings are handled here, that's good. There are already something like 13 million sellers here, way more than the # of buyers.
Thanks for letting us know.

·1 year agoYou're welcome. The banking account info thing is only one reason why I don't want to sell on eBay.
The other reason(s)? Just read these forums!
mam98031
·1 year agoDo you think that somehow all 18+ million active sellers worldwide are or should be happy with everything Ebay does, all their rules and never have an issue? The members that come here with complaints or issues are a small fraction of the number of active sellers on the site. Sometimes they have very legit concerns, other times they made a mistake and need to learn how to best work through it.
You want to make it seem like something it isn't. If you are looking for an internet outlet that is perfect for you to sell on, no issues ever, no rules you don't like, it is likely you just need to start your own site. However, when you select who your money processor will be, you are still going to have to give them the SAME information that Ebay, Amazon, Etsy, Poshmark and the rest of them require because it is FEDERAL LAW.
an-57470

·1 year agoOMG you are just on a mission, aren't you.
For whatever reason Ebay has they have not made any public announcements, that I'm aware of, on the number of active sellers worldwide for years. The last one them made was 18+ million active sellers worldwide.
Google AI says: As of 2025, there are approximately 17.6 to 18.3 million active sellers on eBay.
"eBay hosts approximately 17.6 million active sellers worldwide as of 2024, according to verified industry analytics. This represents a slight decline from 18.1 million sellers in 2023, continuing a gradual downward trend from the platform's 2014 peak of 25 million active sellers."

an-57470

·1 year agoAnd I agree with everything you say about selling on-line and eBay's successes and failures, and that's why I have no interest in doing it.
I know I have bugged a lot of you guys, and I am not trying to be funny. It's just that the world is in such a mess, people are getting stupider, and that orangutang running the US isn't helping matters by being a total idiot and making things really difficult for you.
If you can't beat them, join them. So that's what I've been doing for a couple of weeks here, and based on some of your comments, I have been successful.
The stupidity role is getting boring tho ...
It's been a hoot folks - thanks for the laughs and stories that some of you have told here and on companion forums. Might be a chapter in my next book.
I've been having fun on eBay, but selling on any platform is just not for me.
Bye now ...

·1 year agoI don't think a soul here was trying to convince you to sell on the site. I agree, I don't think it is for you just from the way you talk to people that have decades of experience selling on line. I'm not just talking about myself. You pretty much are disrespectful across the board.
I do wish you well for the future.

·1 year agoMy question here is what is the problem then? To get paid you need a bank account attached to your Ebay account. You don't want to provide a bank account number so you can't get paid and sell. Great so you don't agree to terms with what ebay is requesting so don't sell. My suggestion then is sell stuff at a yard sale or swap meet then so you can get cash only. Online selling is not for you.

·1 year agoI am not aware of PayPal ever acknowledging any of the security breaches which have occurred there over the years. And you can be sure there have been some.
Frankly, one less seller is probably going to be a benefit to Ebay's reputation and the ease and safety of buying on Ebay.
johnrj1226
·1 year agoSeem to recall sellers had to provide that info when eBay was hooked up with PayPal as the Money Processor.
But if you don't want to do it now that is just fine but don't expect to be an seller on eBay.

·1 year agoDoes it really matter today = No
But seem to vividly recall a discussion I had with a PayPal rep and what previously I stated was "spot on" correct - in a case where their was a fund refund but seller's PayPal Debit Card had ISF to cover the total refund amount, PayPal would try to work with the seller if the got nowhere PayPal would charge their PayPal credit card IF they had one or "bang" their on file checking account even if the charge resulted in an NSF charge fee and let the seller handle all the pending issues including credit rating..

In the summer of 2020 Ebay started bringing Managed Payments site wide. Over the next 18 months they onboarded all the sellers to Ebay's money processing system, so sellers no longer can use PayPal. Buyers can but sellers can't. Ebay also has a bunch of new FEDERAL LAWS to adhere to.
Please review the below link carefully. It contains very important information as to how Ebay needs to see the information you provide them on your account. It is likely easier to change your Ebay account to match your bank account if you find there to be a difference.

gone.c-33
·1 year agoYou mean like post 17 where stainlessenginecovers pointed out the only selling platforms with actual buyers required sellers to provide banking info to receive payments, to which you wrongly replied “not trueâ€? mam98031
·1 year agoWe can name other sites here without getting posts removed, deleted or edited UNLESS you are telling someone they should go sell there instead of here. So if you got posts removed, it wasn't just because you mentioned Amazon, it was due to what you said.
As to post 14 & 17 that you seem to like so well. It is great advice. Advice that I often give to new sellers and advice I followed my self. I have a personal checking account set up at my bank of choice that all my internet sales feed into. From that account I will transfer the money where I need it to go, but I never use my main bank account on any Marketplace. This is just an added layer of security for my personal finances. And I think it is great advice for other sellers.
a_c_green
·1 year agoThe only time I'm aware of that happening is when a merchant processes a refund (including here). I buy with my Discover card, and whenever I receive a refund for whatever reason, the money goes back to my card.
But that's for refunds only. Proceeds from your sales here go through the Automated Clearing House system into your checking account, the same as any other payment you might receive from elsewhere.

·1 year agoWhen I first started on EBAY years ago I had to get a PO Box, wait for personal checks and it was a lot of work and time. Now EBAY pretty much handles all transactions between buyer and seller. They send your money to your account at a time you request. I think it is a good system.

As I don't know any of those 13 million people personally, I'm still a bit leery!
I guess I'm old fashioned - I don't like the idea of handing over control of my money to a 3rd party ( venue, as they used to call it) when I'm dealing with another person.
I long for the old days when payments were made directly to sellers from buyers - we didn't need a middle-man taking a cut to make the transaction 'easier'.

eBay used to call itself a 'venue only' when buyers and sellers got into arguments and asked them to help. They often compared themselves to a newspaper selling want ads and 'for sale' ads.
Would you give them your banking info to protect you?
I agree that time has passed and changes have been made. Now eBay is fully involved in every transaction, thus no longer a 'venue only'.
It works perfectly for me as a buyer, but the rules are too onerous for me to sell there.

an-57470
·1 year agoThat's the same advice I got when I thought about selling comic books and trading cards on eBay. I thought they could apply any sales money I made to my buying credit card as credits, but apparently not.
Giving eBay access to any of my bank accounts, in addition to what I've already given them is just a little too much for me.
a_c_green
·1 year ago@dancerighter, @Anonymous : As was noted already, no one requires you to use your personal checking account; in fact it's preferable to open a completely separate account to use for eBay business only. That way, if things go seriously sideways, your personal accounts will be untouched. It also makes things much simpler for reporting at tax time.
For example, I have a credit union account for eBay sales only. I transfer the funds deposited there into my other accounts as needed.
