I'm not your bro
I just got this message from a potential *ahem* buyer.
"Hi bro, would you be able to send one white T-shirt using this QR code, please?"
Then he provided a QR code to like his Fedex account.
There's no way this guy gets any success with this, especially since he didn't even specify what size.

*sigh This is what I get for CA public schools.
Yep, I said it.
One of the reasons ‘The Crown’ is my favorite all time shows is I would sink into and marvel at the intelligent use of the English language.

·6 months agoThis ID has Steve [real store owner] in it's name - Get lot's of "Hey Steve ..." messages and I reply 'Steve's the boss but Darlene does the ebay' - Most times second message is to me but sometime still address to Steve. If you 'steve' me twice you get blocked.
Now I have to deal with the guy who bought the 'missing parts' item and wants to return it because it's missing parts.

You block buyers who call your account by your account name?
steve_stuff
·6 months ago"You block buyers who call your account by your account name?"
Half joking - You're 'allowed' to say Steve the first time but after being told it's Darlene and you respond with thank you or OK 'Steve' then you just told me you're not reading what I'm writing and we don't want to deal with you because you're going to be a pain in the place I sit on.

·6 months agoI need white noise while I work so I often have bodycam footage videos playing on YouTube in the background. I’ve noticed the younger kids (14-20) calling everyone “bro”. Men, women, kids, the elderly… it’s also often used as a filler word, the way “like” used to be… I don’t know why but I find it slightly disturbing.
christworks
·6 months agoUsed to be? I hear it everywhere I go.
gone.c-33
·6 months agoBro, maybe I don’t hear it as much anymore, bro, because bro, every time I hear them say bro, it’s so jarring, bro!

·6 months agoWhat is an "ahem" buyer? You can probably figure out that I'm not current on all the new language and terms.
jonathanbrightlight
·6 months agoI might chuckle at being called “bro”, but it wouldn’t affect my response at all.
Any QR code or link of any type not to a eBay listing is a red flag, though. Even if that genuinely is just a link to their FedEx account somehow, I would either ignore or reject their request in a response, and would probably report the message for violating the links policy: https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-policies/links-policy?id=4248

·6 months agoSome waitresses call me "baby," and as a female boomer, I don’t find it respectful.
Being called "dude" isn’t much better, and I don’t consider either term endearing.

·6 months agoSir does not bother me. If someone messaged me with that, I'm cool. I'd even be fine if they said 'ma'am.' I would not correct them. What I do not like are casual terms being used at me online. Not by any of you guys and gals here, but buyers in messages. When I see, "Hey man, will you do $20?" on an item that is priced at $90, it reminds me of my brother asking to borrow money. It rubs me the wrong way. Part of it is when those casual terms are used, a low ball offer almost always follows.
In person, I'm definitely going to use "sir" and "ma'am" when dealing with most people I don't know. That is the southern in me. Some men get offended when a waitress calls them "sweetheart." That does not offend me at all.
policequilts
·6 months agoHow about : Hey Toots, would take $20 on that item? 😄 😄
I have a delivery guy / friend of 40+ years that I will call Toots.
He turns a pretty shade of red. 😄

😎 Love,

OP6 months agoHahaha, I like toots, I’ve never heard it used other than in the movies and such though. It’ll feel like I’m in an old timey gangster movie.
Be prepared to hear the word “bruh” more. It’s a Gen alpha thing and I’m hearing my 7 year old using it more and more.

·6 months agoBruh (and its cousin 'brah') has been around a while, descended from 'dawg/dog' ('yo, dog') so I'm thinking it'll be shucked from current slang pretty soon. Maybe replaced by 'I prithee, good sir/madam'. But, we'll see - some of this stuff has great sticking power!
gurlcat
·6 months ago@christworks LOL I was born and raised in Iowa but moved to Arkansas when I was 16, and immediately began waitressing at Waffle House, where the regulars called me the Iowegian Gal. I continued working there off and on the rest of high school and into my early 20's, and Sir, if there's any guaranteed quickest way to get immersed in Southernism, it's working at Waffle House.
I'll call any stranger (man, woman, child) "Honey" or even "Baby" if I'm in the right mood.
tarotfindsandmore
·6 months agoBroad? How bout dame? or lady? or lass? hee hee
I kinda like them all. I don't love ma'am, but even that's context dependent. If a southern gent calls me ma'am it's kind of sweet, but if some urban liberal millenial "ma'am"s me, we could have a problem.
If someone actually called me bro in real life I'd probably start laughing and pat the person on the head.

·6 months agoIn the 60's you would hear a lot of "man" or the surfers would use "dude". I grew up in Venice California, and I can't count the times that replies were followed by "man" or "sure dude." No big deal. Just popular vernacular.
I personally would prefer any of those mentioned except "chick". Always made my feathers wonky.
gurlcat
·6 months ago@mommaknows Do you prefer "broad" then? 😆
policequilts
·6 months agoActually, I sorta like that word.
I have been working on a book with the title

None of these words discussed offend me in the slightest.

·6 months agoespecially since he didn't even specify what size.
I would assume he would specify the size when he paid you, so that would be the least of my worries.
My worry would be that if the buyer controls the shipping account, I believe he can redirect the shipment - negating your seller protection against INRs because the address would not match.
sin-n-dex
·6 months agoThat's why I don't use anyone's shipping account, I don't control the shipping anymore.
I'm called Sir, Bro, Man, Friend, etc, etc, etc. Often times by non-English speakers. I have a female avatar, but people don't look at that, and 90% of people dealing in coins were male (when I started dealing in coins 20 years ago, that may have shifted with more women coin dealers). In my making friends online to exchange coins I only ran across one woman who was serious about her collection, the rest were guys.
C.
iamalwaysright
OP6 months agoLol, paid??? Who said anything about paying? This wasn’t mentioned in his message so I just assumed he was just looking for a free handout. That was the real point of my OP, the “bro” was just icing on the cake.
But now that I think about it, it’s possible he could have just been asking if we could use his fedex account for shipping when he purchased so he wouldn’t get charged for the shipping fee. Of course it’s something I don’t do. Was I in the minority that didn’t happen to see this? I likely also got distracted because he had to tell me upfront that he wanted the “white” shirt (the listing is various colors and sizes) but the size had to wait until after purchase? He could’ve just also told me the shirt color upon purchase too. Honestly I didn’t even figure he actually wanted to purchase a shirt, haha.

·6 months agoI have no problem with being called "bro". On FB marketplace I'm probably called that once a day.
It's usually younger guys and never had an issue with any of them. Some have become regulars.
"Man" and "boss" I usually here from buyers 40 and up more, but "man" is more common.
I'm turning 66 , so I still say "man" too!
After workings 30 years in the building trade unions in NYC, I guess I have thicker skin than most here.

Those are all words that signal to me I don't want to do business with you. Though, full disclosure, they are terms I might use when doing ministry work with felons or street guys. I'll put it that way. Those are not terms I would use in a business setting, especially when discussing business with a seller or buyer.

Honest question, because I'm curious -- Why is "Hey Man" a problem?
To me, it's a greeting spoken in the vernacular of that person.
I put bro, dude, all those words in the same category.
Maybe it's a Beavis and Butthead way of looking at life, but they're pretty funny, so...

Not sure why, I but I'm often mistaken for a dude here despite my frou frou user name and inventory.
christworks
·6 months agoInventory don't mean nothing. lol. I'm a dude and the other night I was sitting here listing dolls. When I did HBC, I often had several "ladies" products, too. I had a friend over one day when I was listing HBC and one of the products in the pallet box was Vagisil wipes, like sample packs. He gave me a hard time about it. Well, a week later a doctor's office bought $200 of wipes from me. My friend has not laughed at me since. 🤣

·6 months agoSo there is absolutely NO possibility that a "dude" could ever be selling those items?
tarotfindsandmore
·6 months agoOf course a dude could, anyone could, but it would be rather unusual. If we were playing 20 questions and the person you were questioning said yes in answer to all of the questions about whether the person sold them, and no to all other types of items (car parts, team jerseys, tools)...it would be extremely unlikely the seller was a "dude".
This is why profiling works, even if folks find it offensive.

Heck, if I see a stack of purses at a sale, that's where I'm headed. I made some ladies mad one time because I got to the purses before they did and scooped up two Coach bags and two with tags Veras. They made some very unbecomming snide remarks for a couple of 60-ish old women. 😆

·6 months agoActually, yeah, I was sitting on a public bench with my foot tucked up under me (which should have been the first clue that "junger mann" wasn't applicable) and this big beast in grey came up and abruptly told me to put my foot down in german. Had no clue what it (I think it was a frau) was saying to me. When I looked at my dad, he just pointed at my leg and made a "down" gesture.
Of course, even "I love you, my dear" sounds abrupt in german. Can't imagine what the "bro" equivalent would be.
