For the longest time one of the big topics on these boards was that eBay did not advertiser enough. Posting about the ads we saw seems to bring an “at last†spring to the heart.
I have posted a few over the past week or so and received many “helpfuls†along with many return positive comments.
One of the comments was quite pointed: Since eBay routinely pushes us to spend money on advertising (i.e. promoting our listings) it seems hypocritical that they do not follow that same premise when it comes to promoting the platform as a whole.

·10 months agoI see eBay ads fairly often on YouTube Shorts.
My AdBlocker Plus is set to ignore ads, so I only get a glimpse.
But they are there.
What demographic uses YTShorts?
And -- are you in the same demographic as your customers?
If you sell- ummm -model trains, are your customers also Boomers? They will be watching the same shows and reading the same magazines you are.
If you are selling Pokemon cards, are your customers 15-35? (Seriously I don't know) They won't be watching BlueBloods or Jeopardy.
I also see a lot of specific eBay listings on MSN (MicroSoftNews?) which is my landing page. Mostly stamp oriented -- and never mine.

·10 months agoYes, it had 2 nostrils in it. I always wondered if it could have moved up and down like an elephant trunk. Oh and his one eyeball had 2 iris/pupils. You can see the right-side one in that photo, but of course the alcohol washed out all color.
Crazy thing is, you would think this combination of deformities would be a one-off, but if you search "one-eyed pig" you can see there have been others with this exact same face, even including the protruding oversized tongue. So it would seem to be a genetic defect that tends to present itself pretty consistently.

·10 months agoI got rid of cable several years ago, stream shows and movies on fmovies (no ads), and use ad blockers on Youtube, so I haven't seen any kind of commercial in ages. I'm not saying this to flex -I just suspect there are probably more people who avoid traditional commercials than ever before, so I wouldn't blame eBay if they consider the budget for them very carefully.

·10 months agoYeah, I don't watch TV at all so don't see the eBay commercials, so am glad to hear they're running them! I might see one on YouTube but haven't yet and will keep an eye out.

·10 months agoWhat makes me smile is how often I hear eBay mentioned in shows and movies, like even if it's not in its heyday anymore, it's still a hardwired part of culture. It's where everyone knows you can buy or sell anything you wouldn't find anywhere else.
I just rewatched all the episodes of Bob's Burgers (2011-present), and eBay was mentioned at least 7 or 8 times that I noticed.
Speaking of things you can't find anywhere else (online anyway) .... OMG I can't believe I didn't know this until just a few days ago, that every photo you ever share here gets archived. I thought I had forever lost all the photos of the very first thing I ever sold here (when the computer I had back then died). But apparently I did share one photo of it HERE in the Community!
This was 'Cy' my cyclops 2-snouted wet specimen piglet, sold to a darling Chinese guy in New York who specifically collected preserved piglets, even sent me a photo of Cy in the gorgeous antique pickle jar he'd bought just for him, on a shelf with other oddball piggies, made me indescribably happy.

OP10 months agoYep. I'm on Paramount + watching old reruns of a spy series called The Agency (Actually it is about the CIA)
An American spy has his motorbike stolen along with some very classified information. He wants it back. He gets a phone call from a Russian spy - do you want your bike back? Make a bid. Confused (what do you mean) conversation back and forth.
And then:
Eventually we come to a full screen shot of an eBay listing page with the bike up for auction, currently 160,000.
Don't know the outcome yet.

·10 months agoI see them frequently on Hulu and Peacock and YouTube streaming. I've seen the ones with auto parts a few times, and I've seen the ones with the girls buying used/ pre-loved/ vintage clothing a bunch of times.
I have teenagers in my house, and I have to assume that these are targeted ads based on what shows they are watching. The commercials about the clothing are young/ trendy girls, so they are definitely aimed at a particular demographic. And the ones about auto parts are all cool people who are fixing up their ride, so again, aimed at a certain demographic.
Ebay is doing some advertising right now, so if you're not seeing/ hearing it, you're probably just not watching the shows or listening to the stations that are in the demographic they are looking for.
I have never seen one when I visit my parents' house and we are watching old episodes of Matlock, lol

·10 months agoI actually see them quite often now. I hope they keep them running throughout the holiday selling season.
Weither I like the ads or not doesn't matter. Just bringing fresh buyers in is the key. One happy customer might tell another and so on. Something is better than nothing.
They should make one letting people know that it's no longer just a auction website. I have a brick and mortor storefront and inform my customers about it. People still think it's a auction site. I have to explain that it's changed and is no different than buying something on Amazon. I think it would pull a lot of the middle aged customers back to the fold. Customers now mostly want an instant purchase.

·10 months agoWell that's misleading isn't it? While you can certainly LIST something for sale on ebay , you CANNOT "sell for free".

·10 months ago@toomuchstuffagain35 yes you can "sell for free" - if you are a private seller in the UK (since last year) or Germany (since 2023), which is why I explicitly said those ads were being run in the UK.
If you are a private consumer to consumer (not business) seller in the UK or Germany, there are no final value fees assessed on your sales - though you may still pay for optional things like listing upgrades or promoted listings ads if you choose to use them.
In the UK, eBay has introduced a Buyer Protection Fee on these sales instead.

·10 months agoI have seen several eBay ads on TV lately. I saw the ad you were talking about @s13lilac . Cute yet disturbing (and not allowed) that the kid (under 18) sold the ball on eBay.

·10 months agoYup, I found the second one (with the jewelry) bothersome as well, talk about "authentic claims" when I know full and well there are MANY items for sale claiming whatever that are in fact fake. Which, it's just attracting buyers who may end up disappointed and that's never good.
That bothered me as well.
I liked the very first one.
It is good however, they need to spend money too, don't let us be the only ones.

·10 months agoI saw an ad for eBay the other night. It was either on the CBS app or Netflix (I watched both and can’t remember which show it was during). It was of a baseball fan catching a baseball at a game, then giving it to a little kid who was standing next to him holding his glove out. Later on the bus the same guy bought the game ball back off eBay.

·10 months agoIt has been a while since I have seen an ebay ad. The ads promoted fashion, automotive and luxury watches/ handbags. While ebay is much larger in scope, it was at least a start. I know tons of people that have purchased on AZ but not on ebay. It just never occurred to them to even look on ebay. That is a shame.
What I have seen in the last few weeks are Etsy ads that are very prominent. I have streaming video and every time I go to youtube (not youtube TV) to watch videos, the very first choice is an Etsy promotion/ description. I watched a part of one and it was very well done.
