I thought direct messaging was turned off to prevent this scam
Summary: Participants discussed ongoing issues with direct messaging (DM) as several users reported receiving fraudulent messages, despite a previous DM shutdown to prevent scams. tobaccocardyahoo and albertabrightalberta discussed the reporting function available for flagging messages, while others noted that some scam messages were not flaggable. devon@ebay announced that DMs were re-enabled but without hyperlinking features for security reasons. Although efforts to identify and neutralize the source of scams continue, several participants, such as powell-collectibles, still reported receiving questionable DMs and are advised to flag them for review.

Hey @nyr134 ! Can you flag this DM so that way we can review it?

·1 month agoI did flag both. They each had what appeared to be a link (highlighted in blue where the curser changed when hovering over it).

·1 month agoDevon ... you are asking members to post something that I did ... mine got removed from the forum for naming and shaming and one of my other posts about the same thing was heavily edited. I asked the mods for a public apology. Nothing. What gives eh?
devon@ebay
Hey @grann-4629 ! I do apologize for that. I will let the mods know to let these screenshots be shown for this instance.

·1 month agoThank you ... just trying to help. I could tell this was a scam right from the first message I received.
devon@ebay
@grann-4629 Thank you for helping! This is doing a great deal of help for us on our end to identify the root cause of the issue.

·Sep 9, 2026 at 10:52 PMInterestingly, at about 3AM today, I saw that we once again had DM available. Then this afternoon saw another of those scam messages from e_b_a_y_h-15. Reported this at that time.
devon@ebay
Hey @bashort ! Just wanted to share with you that DM's have now been enabled once again and for security we have now removed to ability to add hyperlinks within DM's.
Any DM's from before with links will still exist as Bevy did no have a way of removing any of those but moving forward, this will no longer be the case.
Thank you all for your patience and please continue to report any suspicious activity to us.

·1 month ago@devon@ebay Devon; so shouldn't the 'sticky' that was at the top of the forum be simply 'edited' to include that information instead of just deleting the sticky??

·Sep 9, 2026 at 9:04 PM@devon@ebay Is this a temporary move or will we no longer be able to send links in DMs.
devon@ebay
@mam98031 As of now, we are focused on finding the root cause of the bad actors sending fraudulent DM's.
mam98031
·Sep 9, 2026 at 9:23 PMOf course. A big task I am sure. So the turning off of being able to post links is temporary, until the bad actors are located and neutralized, correct???

·Sep 9, 2026 at 10:58 PMI just received one. Not sure if your fix worked.

·1 month agoYou can just tell from the whole 'tone' of this message that it's not from ebay.
"Fulfill your part". Really? LOL Even ebay isn't THAT draconian.

·1 month agoMy fake message from 9/1 also just reappear - and it doesn't have the three dots to 'flag' - our three dots are to block, mute or hide.
dhbookds
·1 month ago · Edited@steve_stuff someone told me how to flag so am passing along.........look way to the right of the poster name.................there are very faint 3 dots and that's where the drop down with flag is........
You also may have to pass your cursor over the area for it to show up.......
steve_stuff
·1 month agoOur 'dots' are right next to the poster name - nothing on the right

·1 month agoNaming and shaming is not allowed here ... my post that first discovered this was very similar to yours and it was removed by the mods.

·1 month agoThe three dots you want are not the ones at the top, but here where the text of the message is.
If you don't see them at first, hover your cursor in that spot.

·1 month agoare you sure that is a NEW message? I still have the old ones showing under DM section.

Did you get that message through your account (as an ASQ) or through the community?
Never mind! I got one too!

·1 month agoYou would think they would have at least implemented a reporting function while DM was down.
albertabrightalberta
·1 month ago · Edited@tobaccocardyahoo
It's reportable. I just "flagged" my message by clicking the 3 dots at the upper right side of the message:
grann-4629
·1 month agoReport it to who, and do you think whoever that is will do something or just toss your report into the round file where all the other reports are?
