I think eBay has fired their IT/web development staff and replaced them with AI.
Summary: The discussion centers around frustrations with eBay's recent outages, bugs, and glitches, which one participant, quadcitypickers, attributes to increased reliance on AI for critical operations. randyshotrods shares difficulties with item visibility and billing, expressing concern over how this impacts sales. There are mentions of a potential class action lawsuit due to these issues. Some participants debate the role of AI and its implications, while others comment on eBay's overall service quality, with some suggesting that persistent complaints are common yet unresolved over time. The conversation also includes light-hearted and skeptical remarks about AI's broader impact.
More outages, issues, bugs, glitches, etc in 6 months than in the last 20 years using eBay.
It is simply inexcusable, for a website this big, this financially large, to have so many issues, so often, and to take so long to fix them.

·1 month agoAI on eBay is of little concern.
All the big AI developers agreeing that there's around a 10% chance of AI advancing to the point where it's a real danger to the survival of the human race within 10 years is just a little more concerning. The disturbing part of that is that they consider that an acceptable risk.
If they're wrong good. If not, the US putting the brakes on it won't stop others from weaponizing it. The cat is out of the bag, the beans have been spilled.
Mankind bought the ticket now we have to take the ride. ( I stole that from the late Hunter S. Thompson-RIP)...............

·1 month ago · EditedAI is good for some things - I use it to do compiling (though I have to check everything) for raw research, for instance.
But I wish people would stop trying to make memes with it - the stuff all looks alike and has 0 creativity, and it's everywhere. The whole point if memes is making new statements out of found images.

·1 month agoYes, it has happened. AI was let in the door because it was carrying an irresistable bag of money, and now we're past the point of no return.
Buckle up!

·1 month agoI can't invoice long standing International customers anymore as of about 2 months ago and last night search results have been refined down to a small amount of results I'm not even looking for. I can only imagine what this is doing to my visibility in sales. As it is , I pay to promote an extra 9.2% (what is that all about) plus pay to list in two categories. Now they are refining results in other categories I might not even be listing in because you can only list in two.
I even maintain (daily) and off ebay site just to get google hits to drive people to my ebay auctions.
It's not like I'm not trying, it's ebay throwing road blocks up everytime you find a functional route.

OP1 month agoI imagine there will be a class action in the near future over the issues of item visibility.

·1 month agoBoy we can only hope. My sales have tanked and it's hard to tell if it's the items not being desire able or them not being visible to customers searching for them. I know i have had to go to google more than once to find an item that ebay said didn't exist, only to have google return a hit of that exact item currently on ebay. That has been going on for atleast 3 years now. I know for no reason I will all of a sudden have all my listings sell one night, when the night prior with similar listings had no interest.
I've really been looking for a way out lately. I would love to have free evenings again. (best time to have listings end historically for what I sell) and not have to deal with the B S selling on this site has turned into.

·1 month agoSpeaking of visibility. I was browsing ebay this morning (as a buyer) looking for a particular pair of slippers. I saw one brand new pair and another preowned (slightly beaten up) but identical pair.
I bought the new ones, then thought well ok, maybe I'll JUST wear those inside and get the other pair as a backup for when I have to go outside for something and it's snowy or wet.
Think I can find that other pair now? Of course not.

·1 month agoeBay has been using AI for longer than 6 months.
AI is not new despite being the new hot topic.
quadcitypickers
OP1 month agoI know that, but they seem to be using now it in critical day-to-day operations such as database maintenance, website development, page coding, etc.

·1 month agoThey’ve been doing that for years.
Coding pages is one of the few fields AI is good for. It’s repetitive and basic, with nothing left to interpretation. If you see a bug in a page, its most likely a human that tried to go in and modify something.
Asking AI do to basic coding > asking AI to answer questions.
