I refunded a buyer too early. He won't respond.
Summary: rycieci0 shared an issue where a package was incorrectly marked as delivered by USPS, leading to a premature refund to the buyer. Despite USPS confirming the package was eventually delivered correctly, the buyer hasn't responded. gurlcat advised that the money might be unrecoverable and suggested seeking help earlier in similar cases. ryry-jj mentioned potential recourse through contacting customer support, and noted discrepancies in the USPS tracking details. mam98031 provided general advice for handling package tracking issues, and authentic*vintage suggested reporting the buyer for potential misuse of returns.
Late on August 31, a buyer reported his item not delivered to eBay. He correctly noted that the USPS tracking data showed the item was delivered to the wrong town.
I hadn't dealt with this issue before. First, I confirmed that I had attached the correct shipping address to the package, and therefore, the mistake was on USPS's end.
I incorrectly assumed that this meant the package was lost, so I refunded a buyer for $46.05 (plus taxes). I was willing to absorb the loss because I expected to repaid by USPS's insurance.
The next day, I spoke with USPS over the phone. The USPS worker said that the package was scanned "delivered" at the wrong location, but then it was internally marked misshipped and sent back to a distribution center. It was then rerouted to the correct PO box and a customer picked it up that morning.
--
So USPS verified that the eBay buyer has his package now. The problem is I've already refunded him, and he isn't responding to my messages.
The buyer has been on eBay for over 25 years and has 100% positive feedback from his 1000+ ratings.
It's now over a week later without a response. Does anyone have any recommendations?

·Sep 11, 2026 at 2:11 AMYou can TRY to report the buyer for misuse of returns.
The buyer knows they are being dishonest; even if they can technically get away with this, they are, in essence, stealing from you.

·Sep 10, 2026 at 6:17 PM@rycieci0 This is something I share with sellers that are having a tracking issue. Some of it may not apply to you, but in general it is good information to save for a later time as it will happen sometime. This is specific to USPS packages.
There are things a seller should do immediately when they see that a package is not moving like it should. A seller should do this even if the buyer has not reached out to them with a delivery issue or filed and INR.
First go to USPS and call up the tracking number.
https://tools.usps.com/tracking/
Once you call up the information, now sign up for the UPDATES you can get via Email. This act alone for some reason will shake a package loose from time to time. IDK why, but it has been known to happen.
After you take care of this. Now go and file for a TRACE on the package. You can file these after your package is delayed more than 7 days.
https://www.usps.com/help/missing-mail.htm
If your buyer has NOT contacted you about a late delivery, do NOT contact them. Gather the info and try to get the package moving and delivered. Do not create a problem where none currently exists. You will likely pay a price for doing that. However if your buyer has reached out to you, be transparent and honest with them. Tell them what you see on the tracking and that you have filed for a Trace on the package. It will typically take USPS 48-72 hours to reach out with an update. Assure the buyer that you will keep them updated as you gather information. This will go a long way to keep the buyer calm.

·Sep 10, 2026 at 12:41 AM · Editedyou might have recourse....does tracking show delivered, and did you ship on time with a label purchased on eBay? and did the buyer actually file an INR case?

OPSep 10, 2026 at 1:32 AMThe tracking shows "delivered," but to the incorrect address. I do have an email from the local USPS explaining what happened: "Thank you for contacting us regarding your package. After an investigation into the tracking breadcrumbs, looks like it was accidentally scanned "delivered" to a po box in [WRONG ADDRESS] on 08/29/2026, but then scanned misshipped and sent back to a distribution center. The package was routed correctly to [CORRECT ADDRESS]. It was delivered successfully to the Po box. A customer picked up the package from the PO Box later that same day, around 09:14am.
I'm sorry for the confusion that delivered scan caused, looks like it was accidental. "
I added the brackets to keep the customer confidential.
Yes, I shipped on time with a lebel purchased on eBay. The buyer did file an INR case, which was closed after I prematurely refunded him.

·Sep 11, 2026 at 1:16 AMOk, contact CS on Instagram, you will need that letter, hopefully it is accepted. Typically , eBay needs to see tracking show as delivered, and that you shipped on time with a label purchase on ebay to get reimbursed for the refund you sent. Not sure how the wrong address will come into play, especially if it is a wrong zip code as well
What does tracking show as the full tracking on USPS site, not ebay? Does it show being sent to the correct address s the final delivery?

OPSep 11, 2026 at 1:48 AM · EditedThe full tracking on the USPS site is still incomplete. It stops after the first "delivered," when it's at the wrong address. Thank you. I will contact customer service. Do you recommend I do it through Instagram? I don't have an account.

·3 weeks ago · EditedCouple questions that need to be addressed...how does the USPS say, scanned "misshipped", but that doesn't show in the tracking? Or even know it was delivered correctly & picked up by some customer without tracking showing that is what happened? Something is funny with that letter and the USPS account of things.
My gut tells me the package went to the wrong location and that is where it sits. For eBay to help, you need tracking to fully show delivered to your customer. I think you have a stronger case that the USPS didn't make the delivery and the letter just supports that they cant prove they delivered it correctly

·Sep 9, 2026 at 10:15 PMSorry but that money is gone. We could have told you precisely how to handle this if you had asked when they first filed the INR, but now it's too late. Next time please come ask for help at the first sign of trouble.

Thanks for your time.
