I just saw new listing photo layout ... ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE ... PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK!!
Summary: ajs_coins_and_alchemy started a discussion expressing frustration over a new photo layout on eBay, which displays multiple enlarged photos and requires extra clicks to see all images. Many participants voiced similar dissatisfaction, citing concerns about buyer confusion and the potential for increased returns. Some users described the change as inconvenient and not user-friendly, affecting both buying and selling experiences. However, a few participants appreciated the new layout, while others called for a reversion to the previous format. Despite a mix of opinions, most agreed the update was problematic for efficient browsing and clear representation of products.
Who in there right mind changed the listing photo layout and set it up this way???
First, the original with only 1 main enlarged pic is totally fine, look at literally every e-commerce site ever (that I can think of) ... there is 1 enlarged pic and you can scroll through the rest ... now I can see up to 5 enlarged photos (awkward) and the rest are hidden unless I click a tiny button saying "see all X photos". I literally almost missed it.
This is ridiculous for me as a buyer and I can only imagine the buyers that will try to return items claiming they didn't see the defects or know there were additional pics because this new layout is not intuitive at all.
This is one of the most consequential and absolutely bone-headed changes eBay ever made. I hate it as a buyer and I hate it as a seller.

·1 week agoFor multi-variant products: New design was broken, didn't work, needs full rework
For single-variant products: Looked good but needed to show all 12 photos on the page, users won't click or interact with lightbox gallerys for information. Would have been an improvement if that was considered.
Consider: A different layout for each type of listing so each type of listing can shine, not just be a jack of all trades master of none. This could even stretch to (1) single variant (2) multi-variant (3) auction with a focus on countdowns/bids/dates
ruby_c_took
·1 week agoI would have also been fine with it for single variation listings as long as you could still see all the available photos.
If they made it something you could select when listing, that would be interesting. Honestly, they could have left it in place for listings with 5 photos or less, but . . . that's not how they roll.

OP6 days agoI forgot for a while what it meant to click-to-zoom. Clicking opened the gallery in the new version ... so once the original came back and I started poking around I realized I had forgotten how basic, functional and user friendly the original actually was. I had taken it totally for granted. Using it was like breathing, you don't even realize you're doing it. I mean being able to scroll thru pics all in one spot and click to zoom in/out quickly and efficiently without having to scroll up and down a page or open a separate gallery view ... geez. Please don't ever go back to that garbage "new" version again.

·1 week agoPart of me feels like this is a stealth nerf to break multi-variant listings so more users list individual items, allowing eBay to charge more on item listing fees.
strangestash
·1 week ago · EditedNow if a multi-variant listing has more than 5x photos users just aren't going to see them, and those that do need to click into a horrendous lightbox style gallery to view more photos. This is straight up bad UX design, requiring extra clicks to a seperate gallery lightbox. What big site in the last 10 years has REQUIRED interacting with a lightbox to get the information you need? If you want to display all the images on the page as a big masonry grid on the left that's fine, but include all 12 photos. If that was factored in then yes, for a SINGLE variant product this design would be cleaner and nice, BUT ...
... there's a catastrophic impact on MULTI-VARIANT listings that hasn't been considered ...
For those of us that rely heavily on multi-variant listings, especially in the trading card category, this has now broken most of our shops.
Now when you land on a multi-variant listing it isn't clear at all to the buyer its' a multi-variant listing - before they would see the thumbnails and be able to navigate variants that way too. It NEEDS a thumbnail row somewhere to control the main image/variants - look at ANY shopify theme or site, it's basic UX best practices. The images now can't be used to to select your variant, so the UX shopping habbit you'd taught users has now completely disappeared.
If you land directly on a variant on desktop there is NO GALLERY OR THUMBSTRIP at all!
I built my store around this multi-variant setup, and now this backwards step has undone all my work on about 12,000 variants. Customers will land on the page, see one image, bounce off.
This is going to negatively impact the whole TRADING CARDS category who setup their listings this way.
Can we get an input from eBay's side @kat@ebay ?

WHAT!?!? WHERE!?!?
I haven't been on my computer in like 36 hours, then I saw your posts and got my hopes up ... I hopped on and it's the same old steaming hot pile of garbage.
Some people saw the change to the new (bad) layout slowly ... are they rolling out a change back to original slowly too?
Did you actually see the new layout and now you are seeing a change back to the original? Are you witnessing this change on the same browser? Did you do anything different?
I'm holding on to whatever shred of hope that you guys are right and there is a rollback. They desperately need to roll this back, I see zero improvement in the change they made, it was a massive step backwards.

·1 week ago · EditedSo the idea that it's inconvenient and time-consuming to view the additional photos in a popup viewer -that is non-debatable; if it's true for you, then it's true. I do lots of shopping here and I had always used gallery view anyway, so to me this isn't a big deal at all.
But as for the idea that buyers won't know there are more photos, come on. Think of all the online shopping venues you go to -you know they all have their own ways to display/advance photos, so you just fiddle with it to figure out how to see them all. And as for established buyers who were completely used to the old display, they're not going to assume the 5 (or 3) photos visible are the ONLY ones, because the layout is so starkly different -you noticed it instantly, didn't you? Then you figured it out, right? So will buyers, whether they're new or old.
BUT just in case there are some extra challenged buyers, I always say 'Write descriptions as if there are no photos, and post photos as if there are no descriptions' and when it comes to this new display layout, I will be sure to include a prompt in my 3rd photo of each listing that buyers' eyes can't miss. Easy peasy.
ajs_coins_and_alchemy
OP1 week agoOk, I may be really stupid then, because I will be the first to admit fall into the trap often where I don't realize there are more photos than there are displayed. I have to literally stop myself and remind myself there MIGHT be more photos than I can see ... or go back to listings to look. Its frustrating to find that there are more photos than displayed, and its even more frustrating to click on gallery view and find that there aren't any extra photos and i wasted my time looking for them.
When only 3 photos are displayed because there are 4 total, and eBay does the whole 3 or 5 displayed, I forget to look for the 4th. Or when there are 6 photos and only 5 displayed, but the 5 photos look plausibly like they are all of them and there couldnt be any more to photograph (im looking at things that have pretty standard means and methods of photographing, and I'm buying from the same exact people regularly, so if you hit all the plausible angles and hit your standard shots, i don't know to look for more) ... but that 6th hidden photo is the oddball extra showing something unexpected or close up of damage or whatever ... i may forget to look at/for it.
So yes, come on. I am an experienced buyer, and one extra hidden photo may be unexpected for me when ... well ... im not expecting that photo.
But yes i have never EVER used gallery view before and never found the need to. The number of listings I've looked at easily surpasses a million, the number of listings I have bid on tracks into the low hundreds of thousands, the number of listings purchased is probably tracking close to high single digit thousands, close to ten thousand. In the end I've spent near $400K on eBay in 4 years ... all without ever needing to use gallery view once ... until this change. And I hope soon I never need to use gallery view ever again.
If it works for you, it works for you. But i've done just fine without gallery view and it is extra work I just don't need.
And I'm sorry ... but as a seller I'm neither interested in adding writing to photos as you suggested (because quite frankly that's more work and if eBay has created a design that even makes you think you need to do extra work to compensate for their design that is a massive failure on eBay's part because they are truly making it more difficult for sellers) ... but I also find text overlay on pics like that to be .... i hate to say it but tacky and unprofessional.
I was very upset when this change occurred. After days of using it ... it has grown on me ... like a nasty itching burning tumor. I didn't know I could hate it anymore than I already did, but I do. I grow more irritable with every use.
My disdain for this layout is immense and immeasureable. ✌️
ruby_c_took
·1 week agoIt looks like they may have reverted it so it's all a moot point . . .
I think that I'm a pretty savvy buyer and it did take me five or six listings before I realized that the lack of the left-hand scroll bar with the photos might be something other than lack a of more photos and found the place to open the gallery. Sure, the change in the layout caught my attention, but I didn't see the place that it gave the number of photos until I was looking for it later.
Here's the thing, though. Time and again, for years, on the forums especially, I have read or been told that buyers can't be bothered to read descriptions. They can't click past the 'view full description' if that's blocking them, they can't scroll, they can't read, I don't know. People who shop online a lot should know that the description is where you can find important information and I would expect them to read it, but supposedly they don't. So if the pictures suddenly require extra effort or attention to access, my assumption is that buyers will treat them like we're told they treat descriptions.
So my reaction to this is mostly based on what I've been led to believe about eBay shoppers. If I think of reasonable people who are good at shopping online, of course they'll look more and figure it out. I've been taught that I should not put my buyers in this category. I'll admit I am actually skeptical whether this is all true or not but it seems quite accepted here. I think if you're thinking of the same buyers who can't or won't read a description to help them know more about an item, why would they look for more pictures to help them, either? Whether these people exist or not, if you believe they do, it's not unreasonable to think this change would be a problem.
That said, I do not dispense with my description as I have been advised to many times. I choose to believe more information is better. After all, I'm a buyer, and I always read the description. In fact, if there is no description or it's done by AI, I likely will not buy the item. But I also don't use the app, so I'm already a statistical anomaly. Regardless, I too always write my description as if there were no photos (and try to make the photos cover everything in the description). It's protection if nothing else.
If the change had become permanent, I likely would have done as you demonstrated, with an image telling them there were more.

·1 week agoI agree! The new photo layout on ebay is horrible!! (I only just realized there were more than 5 photos in 1 listing!! for an item listed for over £1000 may I add!)
The description is also hard to find. I already find it irritating that on the Mobile site I have to click ''See Description'' & I actually decided to delete the App long ago due to multiple issues.
I was starting to have faith in eBay again now that there is free listings but I just had to google/use AI to figure out where the description has gone!?! & tbh I am still unsure if the listings I am currently looking at just don't have a description or whether they are actually hidden somewhere?
It's really frustrating & is just getting worse & worse at this point. Its just bad. :(
Don't get me started on the search function still not working properly...
Just an idea but surely there should be an AI assistant incorporated into the search by now? At least then the results eBay thinks I'm looking for might actually be a little more accurate. Or maybe just search for the words I'm actually typing in the search bar...
I don't know why this is all so complicated for eBay team to understand. At this point I only use eBay because it is still very popular.

·1 week agoAnother annoyance I've found when browsing listings with this new layout is that now it's more of a burden to skim the photos while reading the description. If something is noted in the description and there is a photo of it, I am forced to open gallery mode to find the image, which then completely hides the description I was reading until I exit out of it. Then if other things are noted in the description , I am forced to do that over and over again. The previous layout made it easy to do this, and I didn't have to enter gallery mode to see the images, which then didn't hide the description I was reading.

·1 week ago · EditedIt's ok for single variant items, but it needs to display ALL photos not just five. Buyers are NOT going to interact with a lightbox view to see additional photos, if it isn't in the first five photos it just isn't going to get seen most of the time.
For multi-variant items, it's completely broken our stores; no thumbnail navigation, no click to select variant on images, no big gallery to make it clear there are 200+ variants. It's flat out broken the UX.

·1 week agoHi all. So I'm a 25 year buyer and seller here on eBay. I agree with all who dislike this photo change.
I am a power shopper looking at several thousand items a day. As the searched items slide by on the results page, I right click to open a tab for each interesting item and then come back to them to view the whole listing. Since sellers no longer do a description or worse, rely on stupid AI to blather useless nonsense, the photos ARE the description.
I want to share a couple of thoughts.
1) You better have a REALLY FAST / POWERFUL processor in your phone or computer because this new photo layout forces open a new window which takes that much more time to view the listing. Using a old banger to shop is going to become very frustrating.
2) Is slowing me down a good thing? You might think so BUT, this new photo window completely HIDES the info about the item, the price, and the seller and if I don't see anything in the photos that interests me, I'm going to literally leave the whole listing WITHOUT LOOKING AT WHATEVER ELSE YOU MAY HAVE ON OFFER, without ever seeing your name or feedback. As a seller, you're out of luck. I'm sure this will affect seller page views overall.
ruby_c_took
·1 week agoIt opens a whole new window/tab for you? That's interesting. For me it's just an overlay. It does fill the whole window which I agree is super annoying functionality-wise, but there's virtually no additional performance hit except that now your browser is caching all the images, which it did upon page load in the old version. Now, I suppose, that could be a rationale behind this new format, quicker page loading . . . I hadn't thought of that. Hmmmm. Still hate it.
I just want to throw out there that as a shopper, I do still check descriptions as I find pictures rarely completely adequate and there are some sellers (like me) who do still write descriptions. For me, the lack of a description means I'm less likely to buy it. Apparently data shows that I'm an anomaly which is why many sellers have dispensed with descriptions (I include using the AI summary here--it's as useful as no description, so that's how I classify it) but I do find that a pity.

OP1 week agoBesides some people's opinions that its more visually appealing, or how it is apparently better if you have literally 2 pics on your listing ... I'm still waiting to hear someone argue how it has any improved functionality or what was fundamentally wrong with the previous version?
I don't find it visually appealing at all especially with the different sized/orientation pics ... and the functionality is greatly lacking and seems to be a step backwards in UI and software design on multiple levels. Having to click in, not being able to scroll, orientation of pics ... no hover to zoom, etc etc.
I just don't know who thought up this idea and then who approved it. Why? Just why?
Lastly ... look at like every other e-commerce site. Does anyone else do anything like this? Not that I'm aware of. They all do practically the same thing ... what eBay's previous pic set up was. Hmm. Why does every big ecommerce site do the same thing? It works!! So why the heck did some low level IT person at eBay change something so fundamental and so basic in such a tragic dysfunctional way?

·1 week agoViewing the page code, it's because it has to size to fit the overlay box, which is much smaller than the boundary of the box they have on the original page. Yet another drawback to this approach. It appears they made the photo container boundaries bigger to accommodate the grid view, though, so at least there's that. It was sort of hard to compare the old and new layouts side by side, though, because it would shift between the previous layout and the grid view when I made the developer tools window bigger and the page more narrow, but that also changed the size of the box somewhat.
ruby_c_took
·1 week agoInteresting that there's no hover to zoom. I assume it's always been that way in full gallery mode, but since I never used the gallery, that could have changed as well and I wouldn't know the difference.
In a reply to another comment, I did think of a potential reason for the change. Theoretically, gatekeeping all the pictures behind the overlay could improve page loading times and marginally improve performance, since the page wouldn't load and cache all the images when initially opened.
But it's 2026 and I can't really seriously entertain the idea that the loading time is going to be that much faster for most people opening pages, since most people have fast enough Internet that it would be barely noticeable. Maybe a decade or more ago, something like this would have had an effect, but it seems odd to implement a change like this for that type of reason now.
Regardless, this change is really annoying and troublesome as a buyer. As a seller, I'm wondering if I need to check my photo order on my listings so the most important ones are in a favorable order for the new layout--I assume it's done by listing photo order, but I haven't checked yet to make sure.
Now, sites like Poshmark don't let you hover to zoom which I've always found horribly annoying, but yes, they do have a similar left scroll thumbnail layout. Sites like Newegg and some other big box stores have long made you open a gallery view to see more pictures and zoom, and I've never liked it. Been that way for more than a decade, too--so this isn't even eBay being innovative or trying something new.
Sadly, no one from the design team is going to come in here and tell us why they would take a step backwards functionality-wise.
I wonder how many people on mobile use the website instead of the app.

·1 week agoMost annoying is that the close up I'm looking for is never in the collage of pictures that you can see initially. I could previously just scroll to find it, and now I have to open the gallery. As a buyer, my laziness is surely going to win out and I'm not going to bother to look at all the pictures that are now hidden--so as a seller, this is highly concerning since we're expected to rely on photos now as we are longer assuming people can read.
It is more immediately visually pleasing, I will grant that, but I think it presents some pretty serious negative consequences for both buying and selling. Why eBay keeps pushing people to buy and sell with less information, I don't understand. The more someone knows what they're buying, the less they will be likely to be dissatisfied or return it.

·1 week agoInteresting. I don't mind the look...I am seeing a 3 Photo Collage on Chrome and a 5 Photo Collage on Win Edge. Nothing has changed when viewing on Firefox for me...still the single view.

·1 week agoIt is more visually pleasing, and as a buyer I was briefly impressed until I realized that there were pictures that were essentially hidden and then I became annoyed. Stop hiding relevant information, including pictures. If they wanted to implement a collage highlight with a left scrolling sidebar or something, that would be fine with me. It's the lack of ability to instantly see if another close-up or angle is available that's inconvenient.

·1 week agoThe big ol' "See All 17 Photos" balloon button is good enough for me...

·1 week agoI'm going to be honest and say that I'm lazy and I don't appreciate having to click to see more pictures. Now, obviously, I'm doing it now that I have to and will forget that it annoys me within a few days. My concern is that it will discourage buyers from seeing all the photos. I didn't think that the 'see a x photos' button was that obvious tbh. Once I was looking for it, I saw it. I feel like anything that puts even more information behind an action on the buyer's part is likely bad for sellers.

·1 week agoThe photo layout has not reverted on my account. This is what I see on one of your listings.

·1 week agoFunny , when I go look at it, its the old way. All my viewing is the old way, and yesterday was the new look. So who knows? But thanks for looking.

·1 week agoIt's happening on Google Chrome as well. Yet another thing that eBay pays someone to "fix"... that wasn't even broken. Not an improvement. FRUSTRATING!

·6 days agoYes... it is now populating as it used to do... except that it now directs potential buyers to listings to other sellers... and NONE from my own eBay Store. Granted, they can click on my Store's name... but it's the page full of photos leading to other sellers... that is so unexpected. Who decided THAT was the right idea? Now my listing is just an advertisement for dozens of other sellers...
ajs_coins_and_alchemy
OP5 days ago..... it has always been that way .... ??????
The people who decided THAT are the people who are monetizing their website (i.e. eBay) .... people are paying eBay to have their ads placed all over eBay including on your listings. I have some of my own ads showing up on my own listings.
It may not be a popular opinion, but my view is that if you feel so threatened by other sellers' listings showing up and being advertised on your listing, then you need to make better listings that you can be more confident in, create your own website to sell on, or just get over it. Unfortunately you don't own your listing page, eBay does, and it's their right to monetize it.
The prospective buyer saw tons of other listings in search before clicking on yours, why is it so different that they see tons of other listings when viewing your page? Its just like shopping any other e-commerce site. Serious buyers ignore the ads and focus on your listing details/pics. Only window shoppers (IMO) are paying any mind to those other sellers' ads and window shoppers were unlikely to buy your item anyway ... so its not like you "lost" ths sale.

·1 week agoI also suspect that eBay downgrades the quality of photos.

·1 week agoThey 100% do. Been that way for a decade
bohcaci
·1 week agoVery bad! Why eBay did that? Risky for sellers if buyer's skips to view all photos with details.
Please revert the layout back to the traditional single main image with a standard thumbnail gallery.

·1 week ago · EditedSo far I'm only seeing it in Safari. But I can't wait for it to come to Firefox because it's GORGEOUS. You people who say it looks awful are crazy or just don't like change even when it's good, LOL.
So you prefer the current layout, with promoted ads for similar listings crowded in next to your policies, etc? Seriously??
And no, you don't have to click that "See all ____" thing to see the rest of the photos. Just click any photo and it goes to gallery view.
Yes this will be problematic for variation listings. As a buyer when I click those choices from the pull-down menu, I want to see that photo display. So if you sell in variations you should bombard them with feedback about this. Otherwise, I love the new look.

·1 week agoI kind of like it too.

OP1 week ago · EditedSorry @gurlcat
I'm going to take what may be the really frosty fringe view ... but I have never once complained about other people's promoted listings on my listing page, and every time I hear someone complain about other ads popping up I cringe so hard ... If a seller feels threatened by someone else's listings or ads then they need to create better listings themselves or find a way to overcome it. Ive never once felt threatened by this...
If you want your listing pages to be all about you then you gotta create your own site because unfortunately you don't own your listing page.
So I respect your perspective that you just gained all this space dedicated to you, so it solves your perceived problem, but as a buyer, it has created tons of problems for me.
Now I need to click and open effectively a new mini-window to view images ... and then to place my bid I need to close that window to return to the Bid Button. Its extra clicking and maneuvering I don't need to do when I'm already filtering through & bidding on LITERALLY 500-1,000 auctions per week.
My entire business is filtering and bidding on as many eBay auctions as I can as quickly and efficiently as I can. I've spent years refining my work and looking for how to improve or get any edge or efficiency I can. These extra clicks and maneuvering and new photo layout has severely hampered those efforts. Not to mention the extra awkward scrolling and the fact that the pics are different sizes and in varying layout patterns of 1 big and then 2 side by side and then another 1 big,it makes it awkward for your eyes to follow ... its not a smooth transition ... It's cumbersome, awkward, ubnoxious and not user friendly. I'm not being a dinosaur afraid of change, eBay is forcing me as a buyer to do more work to look at the same pics and it's eating up my time and effort. It's a bad move. Don't make buying harder for buyers. Period.

·1 week ago · EditedI do my sourcing here too (EDIT: and I mean auctions, including ones with only seconds remaining), as well as a fair amount of 'household items' shopping. I tend to open gallery view on most listings anyway. Even if you don't normally do that, it's really not a big deal. A split-second transition.
ajs_coins_and_alchemy
OP1 week ago · EditedI mean ... it's far from split second and all those (not) split second transitions times hundreds add up to extra time wasted each and every week. Also I used to be able to scroll the photos with my little mouse wheel, click through them much easier and zoom them much more easily. None of that seems to exist in the current set-up. So it's not just the transition ... all aspects of the ease of use are gone ... that's more time wasted trying to view photos in a cumbersome way. I'm looking to save an hour or two per week, not add an hour or two. I'm not a casual eBay buyer ... but if I were a casual buyer, I'd be very annoyed by this to the point of being less inclined to shop on eBay. UI is very important to me in my casual buying experiences. I will go out of my way to avoid either sites or apps that are not user-friendly, even if that means entirely choosing not to shop a certain site. Anyways, I think the majority has already clearly spoken on this issue, don't fix what ain't broke, and this definitely wasn't broken.
But I'll agree to disagree. You think my UI issues are not really a big deal and I think the promoted ads taking up "your" listing space are not really a big deal .... PS you must not use promoted ads because I often see my own promoted ads along other sellers' in those spaces on my own listings. So some of my listing ad space goes right back to myself.

·1 week agoI think it can be distracting and overwhelming to have other people's items in your listing - especially for those of us who fall down rabbit holes. You start clicking on other listings wondering what you were even looking at in the first place.
ajs_coins_and_alchemy
OP1 week agoTo the distracting/overwhelming argument I'd argue darwinism
A buyer easily distracted by all those other things is still just browsing and window-shopping and easily distracted by shiny things and wasn't likely to buy your item anyways. If your item was good enough to buy they'd have bought it or would search hard enough to find what they were looking at in the first place.
Something occured to me ... much of this argument of "it takes up more space and pushed promoted ads out of the way" I believe is not a direct intent of the photo layout but a "happy consequence" for you guys. There could be other ways to proverbially skin that cat but this layout and system carries too many issues that they need a new solution.

·1 week agoWait how are you getting 5 pictures, i'm only getting 3.
gurlcat
