year or so back eBay was requiring new sellers to have a cell (or such) to set up a selling account.
I myself, a seller of 20 + years, was threatened with "no payouts" if I did not provide a "cell number". Claim was that they could not verify the "landline" that they used to contact me, and reply to me for the past 20+ years.
Eventually, for some reason they dropped that requirement and paid me,
Scientific American magazines are only selling for about $2 and after EBAY deducts "selling fees" you will be lucky to get "one dollar". But if you still interested in selling you need to follow the steps below.
Before you can sell on EBAY you need to register as a Seller. You must provide your checking account# and social security# (EBAY reports your income to IRS). NAME on your checking account, social security card and EBAY profile page must be EXACT MATCH (or your application may be denied).
You can register by "right click" on weblink below
I do not have a cell phone. I am trying to sell Scientific American magazines online.
eBay is an online service used by online people to make online sales. They are a technology company that relies on technology to operate.
It would not surprise me at all if eBay required sellers to have basic technology like a smartphone, an internet connection, and an email address.
You don't need a smartphone though. A laptop or desktop is fine.
I have no idea, which I why I did not make a definitive statement.
I guess I just expected that by this time, eBay would probably require a response to a verification text to your registered phone number.
@luckythewinner They do. For new sellers, part of the verification process requires a cell phone. It's been questioned to the eBay reps many times & always comes back that it is a requirement. I don't remember exactly which piece of the setup requires it, but if memory serves me right it IS a verification part. I just asked AI & it told me yes, it's needed for "verifcation & security". There are ways to get around it, I think you can get a Google VOIP number & some other weird workarounds.
@geoja-59 If it's a new account, you do need one for verification. If it's an existing acct, you don't. You don't need a smartphone to actually list the item.
New accounts do need a cell phone as simply-best posted, even a VoIP phone won't work. However, it doesn't need to be "your" cellphone and it is just a one time thing. So ask a friend if the code can be sent to them.
