What do the details matter, though? He took the transaction off eBay, either to avoid eBay fees or because he actually believed the "pregnant wife" story.

Because details would dictate more specific assistance to the seller including:
- Advice to avoid a repeat situation
- All the avenues that should be taken to report the scammer
For example, was any of the off eBay communication done through email? If it was, reporting to the email host (google, yahoo, etc) could be one of the most effective report options.
Was the check delivered in person via local pickup or was payment/item exchange done through USPS? If it was a pickup situation then the local police should be involved. If it was done through the mail then a report should be filed with USPIS.
Sadly, this is what happens when you accept payments off the eBay platform. Perhaps you should try to read a bit more as a seller to avoid these of incidents. Sorry for your situation. Lesson learned.

Yes it was a good lesson learned I forget the people for the most part are good but there's some that are very dishonest and what they scam out of people won't make them happy and they'll lose 10 times that much someway guarantee you I can live with out it if they live with it I messaging on eBay and they messaged me back and that's how we set it all up I guess where they just didn't pay through ebay what got me but he said he had to hurry cuz he had a pregnant wife that was going to the hospital so I don't understand why people would use such absurd excuses to do things like that

Unfortunately they found a good target, you. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hope you did contact the Police and file a report. If you haven't and if you want to try and get your money back, you really should contact the police.

Giving you a sob story and rushing you along are both common scam tactics. The goal is for you to feel sympathy and to not have enough time to think before you act.

Anyhow, you saved eBay fees but you gave up what eBay seller protections there are, so your only recourse now is to take what information you have to your local police department. Even if they cannot help you directly, the normal procedure is for them to take a report and give you a case number, which you will find useful as you pursue this.

This is so unBEARable. Now you know why ebay requires online payments. I agree with the poster that stated to get a copy of the check and file criminal charges in the buyer's cities. Hopefully, this can be done online or by phone.

@jaduvall-94 : Please hit the Reply button and give us more details on what happened. Right now I see a whole bunch of completed but unsold listings from you. A lot of them have way underestimated Shipping charges - there is no way you would be able to ship the big heavy items for the Shipping cost you are quoting there.
So aside from whatever happened with a bad check from a buyer you really need to work out what it will cost you to ship each item. A lot of what I see in your unsold listings would be better offered for Local Pickup Only for cash.
Is the bank keeping the check? If the check is returned or if you can get a copy of it you can notify a police station in the city where the buyer lives if it is the USA...It is a large amount. You can google the address you mailed the item to...to see where the buyer lives....I would ask eBay to refund the fees on the sale if you declared the sale. If you didn't declare the sale...you might get a demerit or even worse.

·3 years agoWhy would you accept a check from anyone you don't know and give them some kind of product in exchange? That is a bad idea from the start.
I take it this was a local Pick up. You could have required them to pay in cash or via electronic payment.
I certainly would file a police report ASAP. Have them locate the buyer and sue them in small claims court.

eBay doesn’t allow payment by check unless you sold something on eBay motors.
Why on earth would you accept a check from a total stranger in the first place?

Check his Completed listings rather than his Sold listings and you will see a lot of them. At least one got a bid but was Reserve Not Met. He had another post in the Mentors group asking how he could lift the Reserve and sell to that bidder.
