I don't understand ebay logic behind my shipping fees?
This is starting to get annoying.. Without talking your heads off and going into too much details, my story goes like this..
I sold something for $300 + shipping. The estimated shipping for the buyer was arond $75 (which is crazy for the item that was sold!). I think the buyer paid around $375 total. I got a payout of $323 for this listing.
When I went to purchase a shipping label, I noticed that the USPS label cost around $73 and some change, so I looked at the UPS and FedEx options instead, because the box was bigger than what I can picture the USPS dealing with.. My package was about 20 pounds, and the box was 30 inches wide, 30 inches tall and about 15 inches from front to back. The FedEx label for those dimensions cost around $33 and some change, so I took that route rather than the USPS label, since a package of this size seems more like a UPS/FedEx thing anyway as I can't picture a mailman delivering a package of that size.
Anyway, it clearly states in ebays policy that any remaining funds left over after purchasing a shipping label are left to you and awarded to you as part of your payout... The item gets shipped by FedEx, gets delivered, the customer is happy, all is good.
Two weeks go by, and I get a notification from ebay that my card is being charged for $43 and some change... What? Why? I looked into it a bit more, and it was most definitely because it was taking the $33 and some change that I paid for the FedEx label and adding on the leftover amount totaling up to around $75 (which is what it wanted to charge me for the USPS label that I didn't purchase).
I measured my box. I manually entered the dimensions on the label printing screen for the FedEx label and THAT is the price it gave me for the label.. So why did it charge me the extra funds?

·1 year agoThe price Ebay shows for FedEx and UPS is just an estimate.
Ya don't get the real price until the carrier has it and tacks on their extra charges.

·1 year agoUser error. eBay didn't charge you more. FedEx did, probably because your dimensions were off.
And it was bad form to switch shipping services and attempt to pocket the extra $40. A lot of sellers would have refunded the excess charge. Lucky for you, it wasn't actually excess. The buyer paid what it cost you to ship. You're not out anything.

·1 year agoOh man, I missed that part! OP is lucky they didn't have a much higher price adjustment! I've heard of massive ones before!

·1 year agoYes indeed. The dimensions that were entered for the label purchase are for a box with volume of 8778 cubic inches, whereas the dimensions provided by FedEx yield a volume of 12,586 cubic inches, i.e., almost 50% larger. So the dimensional weight would be much higher and perhaps FedEx has surcharges based on length as USPS does.

The additional charges FROM FedX are not the result of anything having to do with the initial purchase of the label, (you received those 'extra' funds initially) what you were paid, or what you paid. It is an "adjustment' made by FedX that was applied to the shipment, and subsequently billed to your account. There should be an explanation accompanying the charge.

You messed up in your measurements and/or the weight of the package.
You also erred in changing the shipping service because your listing offers Ground Advantage without an option for UPS or Fedex. You can't change shipping companies.

·1 year agoDid you get a message saying there was an adjustment to your label? If so, can you post a screenshot with the details of it?

OP1 year agoI was a bit off with my numbers, but here's the explanation.. I get that my dimensions weren't perfect, but charging an extrra $41.56 for shipping because of a few inches seems outrageous..

That's an adjustment and a penalty.
I've not called FedEx for an itemized breakdown when this happens. But, I have seen quite a few of these adjustments.
My best guess is $30 of the increased cost is the penalty fee. And the remaining difference is the actual adjusted cost to what it should have been initially.
