Huge shipping cost increase?
Summary: feltfootball expressed concern over increased shipping costs for packages, noting unexpected hikes from $5.80-$6.20 to $7.86-$7.69. thriftyfiftyfifty clarified that these increases stem from a USPS rate adjustment in July and changes to discounts for rural areas. Other participants noted frustrations with the rising costs, discussing holiday rate impacts and challenges faced by sellers, particularly in rural areas. Some suggested solutions like using ShipStation to save on costs. The discussion also touched on broader concerns about whether high shipping costs could affect online purchasing habits.
I ship the same thing over and over and over. A 12x6x6 box that weighs 8 ounces. Shipping typically cost between $5.80 and $6.20.
Today I shipped two of these packages and the shipping charge increased to $7.86 and $7.69 overnight. One was to North Carolina and one was to Missouri. Is everything getting a rural surcharge now? I went to Pirateship to see what they were charging and it was the same as eBay. UPS appears to have gone up too.
What changed this week? Shipping costs already went up this year. Why again?
Thx

·4 days ago · EditedThis all brings up my point about online buying. At what point is the shipping too much? When it costs more than the product to ship? I just think mail order purchasing will slow down.

·4 days agoMy solution to this rural problem is on 4oz or less, I charge $6.95 on every package (except combined). So sometimes it cost me $5.40 to $6.05. I make at least a dollar extra. on the rural I pay $8.40 so I lose $1.45 on those. the average rural package for me is about 2 in 7. The net $ are a gain of $7 on those and lose $2.90 on rural. Bottom line is about a $4.10 net profit per 7 orders. The regular city folk pay for the poor rural folk.

·5 days agoDidn't the "temporary" holiday rates just start -- which are on top of all the other increases for the year.

OP5 days agoSomething definitely changed recently. I was hit with no rural charges until a month ago. And now it's every other one. $8.24 to ship something that cost $5.50 at the beginning of the year. Down with the USPS.

·1 month agoAn 8oz T-Shirt from New England to PA cost $7.69, the USPS has stolen the money of Americans to keep us down, and they know it specifically. USPS just collapse for Heaven's sake.

·1 month ago@feltfootball It WASN'T overnight OR Last Week. Those shipping values are the result of the 12 July USPS Increase and eBays adjustment to their Discount for RURAL and Designated "Except" Zipcodes. It has been addressed to death on these forums since July.

OP1 month agoExtremely odd. I ship about a dozen items per week. This is the first I'm seeing of it and coincidentally two items at the exact same time. The only two I had to ship. Very strange.

·1 month agoThey probably just happen to be on the designated "Rural" Zipcode List which you may not have run across yet.

·1 month agoBut we as sellers don't actually know if it is just a regular location or one that USPS deems is rural and charges the extra fees. https://community.ebay.com/forum/announcements-57928/topic/usps-rate-update-effective-august-22-2026-475514/

·1 month ago · EditedSimply look it up after the fact...eBay began providing the Rural Zipcode list in 2024 when it originally started affecting our Discounts.
