How to Make Cody Optimist Club a Charity
I am a member of the Cody optimist club. I want to start selling things that people donate that will be used for Charity around the community. One guy has a huge collection of 1/128 scale cars. One person has a car. Then another guy has a lot of musical instruments he would donate. The idea I have is I could list these items for sale on eBay and then the funds would go to the club other than the shipping and handling fees.
I am wondering if I need to start a special account for the Cody Optimist club or if I can use my ebay account to sell things as I have a good reputation of ~ 440 100% positive feedback rating.
I have several issues with this.
It is starting to appear to me that I would need to start a special account a new eBay account for the Cody Optimist club. ? I know that ebay has this option to donate to a charity in the listings so maybe not. ?
What are the ways forward ? Any suggestions. ? If the Cody Optimist club was listed under the places that people could pick when they sold things -( the place that allows people to donate to charity) then that would bring in revenue without any action on the club's part except telling people that they can choose us as a charitable donation in their listing. I could make a YouTube video on how they could list things and donate the funds to our club. When someone lists things on ebay and its all given to charity how is a person going to show on their taxes that this was not income ? Does ebay track this right or does the selling just get stuck with the tax bill because its an issue that has fallen through the cracks. ? Do The funds go right into the charitable place less the handling fees ? How does it all work ?

·2 years agoI am thinking there are two ways to go about this: Open a new non profit account for the optimist club or list the items on your account giving a percentage to the optimist club. If you do the latter, any returns; you will have to pay the amount given to the charity out of your pocket along with balance from moneys you personally received for selling the item(s) to cover the cost paid by buyer. The portion of moneys paid into personal (might be the same for business account) accounts for charities are not refundable.
Then there is the tax thing, you would be responsible for filing and keeping a paper trail.
