How do people place orders by mistake?
I'm sorry I'm just not understanding how people place orders by mistake?
For the 4th time this week I'm awakened to find I sold something. Then 1 minute later I'm notified the purchaser wants to canceled because they "ordered by mistake."
All four of this weeks cancelers had feedback over 100 each so they aren't new. One then messaged me a second time to "uncancel" his cancellation request because he changed his mind a third time in 4 minutes.
It's not that I care if they cancel. It's I just can't see how one buys something accidentally? I have to click 2 or 3 things to make a purchase. Isn't that the same for most?
Yes, yes I know it's better to cancel etc.

·2 years agoSadly we are all just mere humans and humans make mistakes. But I understand your question as IMHO there are far more claiming this is the issue that is actually true.

·2 years agoThe ones Ive seen before on the Ask A Mentor board where the buyer is claiming something along these lines that are my favorites are:
â€my 4 year old was playing with my phone and bought this (insert expensive non child item here), and I need someone to make the seller cancelâ€. Brings up comments of “wow, talented child with broad interestsâ€
and
“my cat was walking across my keyboard and (etc etc etc)â€. Again, talented cat.

·2 years agoSee, those I actually believe given the number of times I've gotten Discord messages from friends that were things like 'fg;lllll;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;" because their cat walked on the keyboard.

·2 years agoActually it is very easy to make this mistake. If many listings of same item are being watched or in a cart is easy to get mixer up n the best deal.

·2 years agoI didn't read all the answers you've been given, but I know it was said at least once, but the simple answer is: They don't. That's simply a reason eBay gives for when the other reasons don't fit, or a customer just doesn't want to give a real reason. It's impossible to finish ordering and paying by mistake on eBay. They just can't give all the real reasons like "My kid placed the order and I didn't know" and "I found a better price and don't want to honor my commitment to you".

·2 years agoMaybe a kid ordered it?
A few months ago, my 5 year old grandson was asking me for the card.
I ask him what card and he said it was for the TV.
I went and checked the TV and he was trying to buy something he saw on TV.

OP2 years agoThank you all for your answers. I see now I was erroneously assuming the answer was truthful. It's just so silly.
The one purchaser of the 4 that I did block is upset. He now thinks he "probably" wants to buy another item now that he can't buy but will let me know in a couple days but he isn't sure. His wife messaged me. He failed to get her permission before he purchased.

·2 years agoThere is that minor problem that IPhone descriptions don't always show the comments section nor the category. I deal with model trains and nearly bought an item last week that was presented in my search last week as a certain gauge and only happened to notice at the last second it was small for the box it was pictured with. After searching off site I found out the hunch was correct and avoided a VERY expensive error.

·2 years agoi just received a Positive Feedback for an order that the customer asked to be Cancelled

·2 years agoI always add those people to my BBL. There's no reason for that excuse. I feel they should email me with the reason they wish to cancel first. There are legit reasons, just not "by mistake".

·2 years agoYes - Surely its statistical impossibility to get 4 of these in a week.
It is my opinion these are fake accounts designed to show higher activity on the site - higher buyer activity - higher unique user data - etc
Considering the virtual impossibility of this happening, the amount of posts on these boards similar in nature and complaint, and that I cannot see how activity of this nature can benefit anyone but the site itself, I am led to believe what I've opined above.

·2 years agoI just made yet another "mistake", I went to the grocery store to get linguine and I came home with spaghetti, I was positive I picked linguine off the shelf..........apparently not!
While I said "oh well, pasta is pasta", the other diner said "but I told you linguine!" to which I replied "I'm not going back, so it's spaghetti or starve".

·2 years agoI think they use it because they need to pick a reason and that one is as good as any. It kind of reminds me of this.
Employee: I'm not going to be in today.
Boss: Why?
Employee: I'm sick
Employee: I'm not going to be in today.
Me: Ok, you know what will happen if this becomes a habit. See you tomorrow
Me to my boss: Joe isn't coming in today.
My boss: Why not?
Me: Didn't ask
My boss: Why not?
Me: Because he would probably say he was sick but he would be in tomorrow (you know the 24 hour flu), which may or may not be true. So why bother asking and spend the next five minutes listening to some made up story. The important part was, He's not going to be in today and I need someone to cover for him.
My boss was the owner, I knew that irritated him but I just couldn't help myself. I would tell him I had more important stuff to do so if he had to know he could call Joe and find out for himself. A lot of times he would call them, then later tell me they were sick but would be in tomorrow, I'd just laugh.

·2 years agoI ordered something once for my husband, because he wanted it, and a minute later he stuck his head in the room and said, "Oh wait, I have that one already". So I asked to cancel the sale, ordered by mistake. It happens. (I don't buy anything for him on Ebay any more, because we've had all kinds of adventures when I do that. )
whiteyswrecking
·2 years agoThis happens when eBay shows them a better price at checkout... Actually had a buyer admit it.
So cancel yours and reorder the one eBay just showed them at a better price. * suspect promoted listings*??

It is just one of the choices in the dropdown menu aka 'pick a lie list'. Though I don't know because I never tried it, I would not be surprised if it is the first choice in the list. I think another one used to be something along the lines of seller changed the description or terms after the sale...which of course would be an even bigger lie.
As an additional bonus, if the buyer has not paid yet and they request a cancel right away, even if you decline they will never get an unpaid item strike for that listing, and they can leave feedback as well.

·2 years agoI have no problem doing a cancel. But I wait until my "available funds" are in my banking first.
A refund shouldn't have to come out immediately from past payments of other buyers.
stephenmorgan
·2 years agoAll the cancel request I have received have been before the funds are available. Once the funds become available I cancel and refund. This way the money is not going into my bank account and then being taken out of my bank account.

·2 years agoI sell a lot of stuff for kids and I think it's 50/50.
Half the time it's because ebay showed it to them cheaper after payment, and the other half it's, "oops wrong toy" or "oops, they already have this one".
Annoying because it's more bookkeeping entries to keep track of, and also make sure it gets added back to active listings.
I also refund when the payment finishes processing.

·2 years agoHow about when you cancel/void a shipping label.
Of all the reasons, the "real" reason is not there.
"I screwed up."
stainlessenginecovers
·2 years agoor how about when 'cancelling' an order because you, as the seller, KNOW the buyer is buying a part that does NOT fit their vehicle (proof is previous orders)-
So, 'Item will not fit vehicle'
Especially since eBay has spent $2,442,004,004 on commercials that state 'IT FITS- WE GUARANTEE IT!
I really wish eBay would remove that ridiculous reason.
Bought by mistake or accidentally.... horsefeathers I say!

·2 years agoI shake my head and ask myself that every time I get a request to cancel for "purchased by mistake".
Then the other day I ordered 20 items from a ebay seller that I can no longer get from my regular supplier.
About 3 minutes after placing the order, I found out that I CAN in fact still get them from my regular supplier.
So I had to cancel my ebay order and I used the excuse "ordered by mistake". LOL
I'm wondering now if i've been blocked by that seller.

·2 years agoI get plenty of 'ordered by mistake' cancel requests, but for me it *usually* ends up being:
1) Buyer noticed they order to old address, only after completing purchase
2) Realized they want MORE from my store, and cancel to re-purchase in bulk or across items instead of just the one item they thought they wanted.
90% for me end up being those two, and 10% I accept the cancel and then never see them again.
stainlessenginecovers
·2 years agoWhen a buyer says 'by mistake' does NOT mean they "Accidently proceeded with a sale and didn't intend to"..
many times it can mean (and we all know buyers should read/decide/ask questions BEFORE they buy but...)
"I read 'more' about your item and saw that it wouldn't work for me"
"I didn't see/comprehend that your item is for xyz or does xyz"
etc.
I know this because I ask people when they 'cancel' or open a refund "why" and they tell me reasons that make sense for it to "be an accident"
- none of which said 'I accidently pushed a whole lot of buttons'.

·2 years agoPretty much. The last one of those I had was the buyer saying "I bought the wrong character." I'm guessing they were getting a gift for someone and weren't familiar with that particular show themselves.

·2 years agoI had one last month where the item got all the way to the buyer and on the day delivered opened up a return for "ordered by mistake". Not only did I pay to get it back, but when I opened it, it was evident they never opened the package as it still had all my packaging just the way I sent it. They could have a least done a girl a solid and just returned to sender lol. I WOULD have sent back the full return as it was free shipping for them anyway.

·2 years agoThey "order by mistake" if they buy from you, and then 1 minute later are presented, courtesy of eBay, with a list of sellers from whom they COULD have bought at a cheaper price. (That, according to a post I read here a few days ago. I personally have not had that experience because I do not buy on eBay.).
stephenmorgan
·2 years agoI can tell you that I personally have this experience often. I will keep receiving offers after I already recieved the item.
kensgiftshop
·2 years agoThat happens.
Last item I bought, after purchase, they showed a few other cheaper listings, then sent me an email showing cheaper listings.
Saying I could have saved money with these other items.
jg.mason
·2 years agoI can't figure out what ebay is trying to achieve by doing that, besides pissing off sellers and buyers. Sellers by having people cancel orders and buyers thinking it's a little late now to be telling me about a better deal after I already payed for my item.
That's worse than the annoying emails amazon sends out after you buy something, telling you they found something you might like and it the same thing you just bought. 🙄
toomuchstuffagain35
·2 years agoThe "doesn't fit' being an auto remorse return has been wrong from the start. So many buyers got screwed over by choosing that when it 'didn't fit' because the seller sent the wrong size, part, model etc.
They should have had TWO 'doesn't fit' selections. But then knowing ebay they would have still screwed up the wording.

·2 years agoTruth is you can't "order by mistake". It is just eBays way of coddling irresponsible behaviour from buyers.
slippinjimmy
·2 years agoMY truth is that it CAN happen, I know from personal experience when I have made a mistake.
Mistake #1 - Not paying attention
Mistake #2 - Not paying (a different type of) attention
Mistake #3 - Not fully understanding what the listing said until AFTER I had already bought
Perhaps buyers think that "made a mistake" will go down better than "I changed my mind".
I've only had a couple of these cancellations (in 25 years), one was "I just realized I already have this" another was "I really can't afford these right now".
I figure buyers are allowed to make mistakes to at least the same extent that sellers make mistakes.

·2 years agoNot necessarily true. My brother did actually pocket buy something that was saved in his watch list. He couldn't believe it. He went through with the purchase as he knew the seller would never believe him. He said he wouldn't believe a story like that. So there we go!
