How do I opt out of seller offers just because I looked at their listing?
Just because I glance at someone's listing doesn't mean I want to be bombarded with offers. It's not on my watch list. If I wanted it I would buy it or message the seller. Please help! It is the most annoying problem tons of messages every day. It does seem desperate on their part, it's out of hand now. Stop stalking!

Go to this page:

Under Buying Activity, uncheck "Offers to buyers" near the top. Uncheck "competing offers" at the bottom. Save changes.

So tired of this.

·1 year agoHey did you notice (in the replies added since yours on Tuesday) that it seems some buyers are now rolled-into changes -I assume related to the ones we sellers are seeing, where 'promotions' is now 'advertising' or whatever?
Looks like maybe eBay is taking away buyer's ability to opt out of this kind of harassment. Brilliant as ever. 🙄
Anyway I'm also concerned that this thread will be killed any moment due to 'age' even though the topic is still relevant and evolving. -Isn't there something you've done in the past to prevent that happening?
wastingtime101
·1 year agoAdvertising Preferences and Communication Preferences are 2 different things. Not even sure if that's what you're referring to.
I don't know if the posters saying they can't find the option are looking in the correct spot. I'll re-post the instructions and tag recent responders that had an issue.
I have no way to prevent mods from closing an old thread. If someone reports it, mods will lock it.
wastingtime101
·1 year ago@beautifulsky1 @adamsmt1976 @statusonestatus See above. That's a direct link, but you can easily navigate there. On the website, upper left corner where it says "Hi [yourname] - click on that then select Account Settings. From the account settings page select Communication Preferences and that will take you to the page I linked above.
@pluchem239 If you have everything unchecked and are still getting offers, I suggest checking the boxes and saving, then going back and unchecking them and saving again. Essentially, turning it off/on again. Another poster I suggested try that said it resolved the problem for them.

That said, I went back and read the "best answer" on this thread and it's outdated so I am going to ask the mods to lock it - that's the entire reason old threads are locked (old info). The preferences in that response only half exist. Info I posted is more up-to-date.

·1 year agoThis policy really discourages me from formally "watching" any items at all. Now, before I click "add to watchlist," I think long and hard about reasons for watching and whether I really want to, since doing so opens me to offers and sometimes daily notifications about the item.
I also hate the lingering "offers to review" notification (4 days until offers expire). The only way to get rid of it is to either WAIT 4 days for the offers to expire or manually decline each. All this extra interaction with these functions takes away from my browsing time, ebay. Let users control their ebay experience and OPT OUT of these obnoxious advertisements!

·1 year agoBest way I figured to look at stuff is NOT BEING LOGGED INTO your account at computer. No tracking that way.
steve_stuff
·1 year ago"glance at someone's listing doesn't mean I want to be bombarded with offers"
Simple solution [She said sarcastically] - Before we open a listing to copy any/all info to be reworked and used in our listing, we first contact the seller and inform them that we have no interest in their item and are just stealing their copy.
Really we send 'only opened to copy' as the reply when we decline any/all offers.
gurlcat
·1 year agoYour solution (simple or not) is literally pointless and can only irritate sellers who take issue with their work being "stolen" -I personally don't care and eBay policy dictates that everything in a listing including photos is fair use, but I know it makes some sellers furious. And that's when they just stumble on the "theft" -you creating a message notification that they need to read, stating that you're going to be their competitor for selling the same item AND doing so by using their listing content ... you are bound to poke the wrong bear one of these days, just saying.

More importantly, there is nothing they can do with your tip-off about not being interested in buying their item. There is no way to opt your username out of their 'Interested Buyers' roster. They can't even see what usernames are IN that roster. How do you not know this? Have you just never played around with seller-initiated offers before?
Here I'll show you what the seller sees:
This item has 7 actual watchers right now
But if I click that Send Offers thing, I get this popup, which shows a higher number of "Interested" buyers who will receive my offer if I send one out. Incidentally this is actually one of the most extreme examples I've ever seen, where the 'interested' is essentially double the number of true watchers.
But look -there is no list of usernames from which I can 'omit' any. There isn't even an option to exclude viewer-only buyers, and send the offer to watchers only. eBay's software is what decides who interested buyers are; sellers have zero control over that.
I mean I guess theoretically you could request that sellers add your username to their blocked buyer list, but why should they have to bend over backwards to prevent annoying you, when you're admittedly stealing their work and (annoyingly) rubbing that in their faces???

·1 year agoAs both a buyer and a seller, I personally really like the feature. I think the majority of both buyers and seller on eBay expect a little haggling. Same for selling in person at shows. It's all part of the "experience". Most all my antiques dealer acquaintances price their items with a little wiggle room. We're not desperate, just logical. That's just part of it. It sounds easy enough to disable that feature so that should solve your problem.
As a rule, I have had very good success with sending unsolicited offers to people whom eBay has notified me that they are interested in my items. And I might add, those notifications to send offers are eBay's doing and not the sellers'. Sellers just get a notification to send a potential customer an offer. We don't know if you've just glanced at it, watched it or put it in your cart. I don't consider it stalking or "desperate" as some have suggested. You know the old saying, strike while the iron is hot. What better time to send an offer to a prospective buyer than just after they've looked at your item and before they continue their online search.
And BTW, as a buyer, I LOVE receiving these offers because sometimes they are very pleasantly surprising! So if you don't want to participate in "the experience" like so many customers do, just adjust your settings! Problem solved and everyone is happy. Happy hunting and selling to all!
station13thirteen
·1 year agoThe main point of this whole talk/complaint is that there IS NOT anyway to ADJUST eBay settings for those of us who don't want to participate in the OFFERS 'experience' and be continually flooded with them. PROBLEM UNSOLVED. Many of us UNHAPPY!
And like someone else mentioned, you can't even delete the **bleep** things. You seemingly have to wait for the offer to expire. In the meantime these unwanted offers fill up our eBay summary screen.
Just another annoying Ebay feature of which we have no control over.

·2 years agoThis procedure does not work in 2024 eBay for turning off buyer offers, that could be old information. What is the correct information. I am not selling, but only buying?
continentalcollectibles
·2 years agoUnfortunately, it used to be only Buyers who put the item in their "Watch List" would show up in the sellers send offers link " Listings Eligible to send offers" Link which is how it should stay as someone watching it is definitely interested in the item either to purchase or see what it eventually brings,
BUT eBay in their INFINITE WISDOM has decided that now just Viewing the item. now shows up in The Sellers "Suggested Actions" Send Offer link, it hard to think of the seller as a "Stalker" When he has no bad intentions by doing that, they are actually trying to give the interested Buyer a Discount and Create a Sale. Especially since it's not designated as Watch List or view. its eBay that encourages Sellers to send out offers to increase Sales,
I certainly don't understand their reasoning for doing that but would assume since views and Buyers in General have abandoned ship that they are wanting the Seller to think Look at All these Potential buyers you have! Ten-o-nine gave you great step by step instructions to opt out of them. Have a Wonderful rest of the week!

·2 years agoI also find it very annoying. If I wanted to purchase the item I would have. If I was not willing to pay the listed price I would not have bothered to look at the listing.
If the seller is willing to take less for the item why not list it at the lower price? I understand hoping to get maximum dollar for any item but why turn off future buyers who figure since you're willing to sell for less all of your items must be overpriced to begin with?
FWIT, I have not purchased anything from any seller who sent me an offer. I have purchased identical items at a higher price from sellers who don't annoy me.

·2 years agoTo opt out of seller offers on eBay, follow these steps:
1. Go to the "Account" dropdown menu in the top right corner of the eBay homepage.
2. Select "Account settings".
3. Scroll down to the "Communication preferences" section.
4. Under "Seller offers", toggle the switch to "Off".
5. Confirm the change.
This will prevent sellers from sending you offers based on your browsing history. Note that you may still receive offers if you've previously expressed interest in a seller's items or if you've purchased from them before. To stop all offers, including those based on purchase history, toggle the "All purchase-related offers" switch to "Off" in the same "Communication preferences" section.

·2 years agoI think eBay has removed the option of “opting out of offersâ€! It’s so annoying. I can’t even casually browse eBay without getting an offer for something I am not interested in. This is desperate and selfish on eBay’s part. It takes the fun out of just online browsing.
buyer01923
·2 years agoeBay has eliminated any possibility of editing messages from sellers stalking buyers because they looked at their action. These are now the only two options to edit communications preferences:
Buyer:
Buying Activity
Edit your buying notification preferences and set your watched or outbid items for email.
Best Offer
Edit your Best Offer notification preferences. Be notified when your offer has been submitted or you receive a counteroffer.

·1 year agoThese steps were clear--I found the Communication preferences section. However, as of today, 11/24/24, there us no heading titled "Seller offers." ·2 years agoAs a seller, I certainly don't want to annoy buyers with unwanted offers.
That being said, if an item shows up in my "eligible to send offers" - I will send out offers because it appears to me like the buyer is open to offers.
I think Ebay needs to NOT make buyers eligible if they just looked at an item. That is crazy. It isn't fair to the buyer to get unwanted offers.... and it isn't fair to the seller because their offer annoys the buyer.
sextons-sweet-deals

chapeau-noir
·2 years agoYou can get offers without putting the item on your watch list - this is the problem. See upthread.
Blocking offers from sellers was discussed upthread.
GENERAL: I'm wondering if eBay has changed their criteria for sending offers - it used to be if the buyer viewed the item three times it became eligible for an offer. If that changed that, I can see someone actually getting bombarded with them.
This makes me think twice about sending offers to people who have items on their watch list (I don't send them on items with 0 watchers as I think this would be annoying).
sextons-sweet-deals
·2 years agointeresting.
I only send offers under my 'Listings eligible to send offers'.
fern*wood
·2 years agoThat seems to be the problem, ebay is making too many of our items eligible for offers when buyers just aren't into them.
chapeau-noir
·2 years agoLook down your list of eligible offers - if you see the watch count as "0", that person doesn't have their item on their watch list, yet have viewed it a certain amount of times - I always have quite a few of those mixed in. I don't send offers for those because I personally feel like it's kind of pushy to be hassling people at that level, but whether or not one does, I wonder if eBay changed the view criteria so that the OP and others are getting so many of these offers.
@sextons-sweet-deals
my-cottage-books-and-antiques
·2 years ago@chapeau-noir I've gotten some of these, and I've been meaning to look a little closer---yes, some are seller initiated offers, but I think in some cases ebay is sending me a message when the seller has lowered the actual price on the listing itself...so it isn't an offer, it's just a lower price...and these are not items on my watch list.
fern*wood
·2 years agoI'd like some clarification about this before I send out more offers. I would ask on the monthly chat if I knew how or when to do that.
chapeau-noir
·2 years agoI've gotten one or two of those notifications, too, and they say that the seller has discounted the item, but IIRC, they ARE on my watch list - I haven't gotten a notification in any other case. Are those items ones that you've looked at a few times? @my-cottage-books-and-antiques
Personally, I don't mind the offers and discount notifications, but I don't get a ton of them, either. It would bother me to be bombarded with them, though.
glowin_bewtie
OP2 years agoI never minded when sellers send messages that the price has been lowered on items on my watch list, but right now i have so many messages stating "because you have viewed this item, you have an offer", just from viewing something for a quick second. i shop around alot & enjoy looking at different items on ebay, but it's gotten to the point that I don't want to click on just anything anymore. i'm becoming an intentional shopper....all these messages/offers have taken the fun out of the "just looking for now". i might've come back to buy, but won't buy when feeling harassed

fern*wood
·2 years agoI like receiving offers for things I'm watching to buy, but I agree they aren't appreciated for items I just look at and don't wish to place on my watch list. Those are often things I'm actually selling and I looked for pricing. I've had a couple of my items sell where the buyer thought it was an offer for their item so they accepted the offer not realizing they just bought the item instead.
As a seller that sends offers to watchers, is there any way for me to limit them to watchers only and not grazers? Or is there any way for me to know when I look at my items to send offers on? I do occasionally see a zero watcher item indicating I can send an offer, but I always skip those.
mamacassidy
·2 years agoThis is not the fault of sellers. Ebay recently changed settings. Before, when I was shown items eligible to send offers on, it was only for an item someone was "watching". And many people who "watch" an item are waiting for an offer so they can get the lowest price.
Now, they tell you there are items that are eligible to send offers on even if someone just looked at the listing. Unfortunately, on the PC website, it doesn't show you if someone is watching or if someone just looked, so we have no idea if this person is interested in buying or not.
We send the offers so that we don't lose the sale on the few that actually want to buy.
Contact ebay and tell them your opinion. Maybe if they get enough complaints from buyers, they'll change it back. Maybe even tell them that this new system is not only annoying, but that it's making it less likely you'll even click on a listing if you know you'll be bombarded with offers.
winterpalace25
·2 years agoAs a seller, when I get ebay's list of suggested items for offers, there is a column for views and a column for watchers. Usually these days, the list will have 3-4 items with only views and no watchers, and 1 item with some watchers. It used to be all watchers and I would offer on all of I had the margin. Now, I only send offers on items that have actual watchers. I don't bother the people that just viewed.
