·4 months agoI bought a used 2 year old rental car a while back, from a local Chevy dealer. It came to them from one of the big car rental places. I put 130,000+ miles on it in 11 years with very few problems, mainly basic maintenance. I gave it to my daughter as her first car, 2 years with no major problems. Only odd thing about it as a rental car is that it is missing some options that were standard on that model. I guess Chevy would build them really stripped for the rental companies.
I've worked for an equipment rental company for 33+ years, that is where the no maintenance horror stories are. Imagine equipment run the equivalent of a car going 100,000 miles without an oil change.

·4 months agoOh goodness yes. When I worked in hotels our airport van did 10,000 miles a month. At one point when it was time to replace a van the owner somehow got an unlimited mileage monthly rental that we rented for 6 months, putting 60,000 miles on it, and we never so much as checked the oil.

·4 months agoWe rented a car a couple of years ago to tour the eastern provinces ... put about 3500 miles on it. Good thing we got unlimited mileage. It was a newer Kia SUV and was a nice economy ride for 4 adults with luggage. I would have bought with no worries, knowing that the rental company had done all the required maintenance and it was in tip-top condition.

·4 months agoI wonder what happens when cops arrest the buyer for stolen cars? Does ebay handle or get the bad rap?
Hertz has many cases the cars they sold or rent were reported by their own office as stolen cars.
(Though i always thought the issue was franchisee was double dipping, report car stolen get paid and use car to get rented)

·4 months agoAccording this story...
https://www.npr.org/2022/12/06/1140998674/hertz-false-accusation-stealing-cars-settlement
... Hertz settled a lawsuit in 2022, paying $168 million to about 400 class action members after Hetz failed to rescind stolen vehicle reports before re-renting the cars, resulting in innocent customers being arrested.
There is nothing in that story about them selling those cars, or 'double dipping' by making insurance claims on those cars.

·4 months agoWhich means what? Hertz have been selling their rental vehicles for over 100 years. All they have done is add another venue to the way they sell off their old rentals.

·4 months agoI've rented cars and I know lots of people who have rented cars. Generally people are more careful about a rental than a vehicle they own themselves. Put a ding in a rental and it will cost you, put a ding in your own vehicle and you have a choice, spend money to fix or just live with it.
I don't think a used rental is any different from buying any used car, you never know for sure how it was treated by the previous owner. One thing for sure, a rental vehicle from Hertz will get regular maintenance service and repairs.
