Here's a new one on me. Racial hate name in the Ship To: on recent order I just got.
Under my other main selling ID, I was preparing to mail out two orders to the same person. After printing out the USPS label and packing slip, I noticed the first and last name. Needless to say, it was not the buyer's actual name but a racial hate name. It shows on the USPS label and the packing slip. I Googled the address and found it to be a legitimate business in Florida. The name used was found on the internet as a hate reference, and stated there was no chance that the name was genuine in the whole world. The buyer had tons of positive feedback from other sellers. It's possible these sellers didn't notice the name after printing the label and P slip. I contacted eBay, and they agreed and were going to report this buyer. I was just shocked that anyone would do such a thing. I didn't know if anyone had experienced this before. I know this is a first for me in 27 years. I know I am being vague here with the name, but I would assume that if I posted this fake, disgusting name, a lot of people would be offended. They had swapped the first letters in the first and last name. NATE was the first name. You may be able to figure out the last name used. Just disgusting, in my opinion. Have a good evening.

·4 months agoReminds me of a David Chappelle skit.
Regardless, I don’t get too upset at stupidity – and this name is just stupid. I suppose that if you really want to, you could find a way to justify problem with the buyer’s address. For me, I suppose I’d look at it this way – will you sending or not sending the item change this person? Are you enabling something? Are you helping to heal a bad situation? I don’t think that you sending the package is going to make one bit of difference in this person’s outlook – I would go ahead and send it.
of course, this assumes what you think – that this is a fake name designed to insult others. I don’t necessarily agree – I think that plenty of people have this name. That would stink to have an order canceled or to be thought of is something that I’m not because of my name.

OP4 months agoThanks, but I don't need $1,700 that badly to support someone getting their jollies from racial hate. I also don't need my business name associated with this on the mailing label. If more sellers did the same, maybe people like this would get the point. To each their own. Thanks for your comment.

·4 months agoGiven the levels of outrage in the modern world, it is hard to respond with the level of disgust which should be required based upon your vague description.
If I found this name as offensive as you do, I would react as you have.
Unfortunately, time spent on the internet has deadened me toward people who I do not know's sense of what is offensive. I suspect there are others who are loath to share the outrage having been misled by some highly sensitive people online in the past.

·4 months agowhat is worse, selling to a racist or selling to a crook who is going to rip other people off with what they buy from you. I sell to plenty of crooks who make put together watches in the Ukraine and its OK
ebay does little with counterfeit sellers so whats the big deal about a racist troll
what about the dope slingers on ebay, are they also bad people

·4 months agoWhy don't you do an address search on the address to find the name associated with the address.
tarotfindsandmore
·4 months agoTo what end? What exactly is the OP going to do with that information? Dox the buyer? Not only is that illegal in many jurisdictions, but it's strictly prohibited by the platform.
Beyond all the obvious absurdity that posters are suggesting here, how in the heck do you know that isn't a legit birth name (maybe the buyer's family is a bunch of racists)? OP, you're treading on super thin ice here with your virtue signaling. Just be appropriately disgusted and move on.
tarotfindsandmore
·4 months agoShip your order, block the buyer, move on. Tolerance isn't about supporting people you agree with or approve of. If the buyer is a racist, that's his problem, not yours. If you take it upon yourself to "do something about it" by violating ebay policy, it will be your problem.
What are you hoping to accomplish by "taking a stand" here? You won't change a thing, you'll just **bleep** off your buyer who will then report you and you'll take the hit. Keep in mind, you are the seller. You are supposed to be the professional. As such, absolutely NO ONE cares how you feel about some random, sick, stupid bigot.
Here, in the real world, grown ups accept that there are many disgusting, ugly humans doing disgusting, ugly things. We keep our distance to the extent that we can, but, more importantly, we try to live our own lives with decency and integrity (and teach our children to do the same).

·4 months agoA sign of the times we live in,I have seen several T-Shirts that people wear in stores that are just disgusting, It's freedom of speech that has been taken to far that it offends others, As far as your order goes if the address is legit, I suppose you have to ship it, Or you can cancel the order, but what would you use as an excuse?
kibble-net
·4 months ago"Freedom of speech" is the freedom from government punishing you for your speech. It doesn't preclude private businesses from kicking you out.
If I owned a local game store, and someone came in wearing a red hat with rural America's favorite catch phrase, I'd kindly ask them to remove it or leave the store. Because that's my right as a private business. And if local citizens want to boycott my establishment because of this action, that's their right as well.
That being said, I'd write "problem with buyer's address" as a racially charged name in the address is indeed a problem for me. I would not be comfortable shipping something to someone who's openly racist or spreading hate. Florida Man can find another vendor to buy from, I'm ok with that.

·4 months agoWill the US postal system deliver mail with just an address (no name)? If so, just cover the name or change it to suit your feelings ... send a message back!

I would never tamper with the label eBay supplies.
No message needs to be sent.
Just ship and move on.
Yes, this particular buyer is likely a troll, but I hope the USPS didn't withhold this other guy's mail.
tarotfindsandmore
·4 months agoThe USPS won't withhold anyone's mail on the basis of a name. Neither will any of the other carriers. My son (a loader for UPS) regularly sends me pics of the horrible/funny/absurd names he sees on the packages he loads. NO ONE CARES. The sum total of the OP's response to this label should have been 😳 😞🤢.
I do feel kind of bad for some of the owner's of these names, but that's about it.

·4 months ago@tarotfindsandmore
I was joking and responding to a query as to whether the USPS would even deliver to someone with that name. Of course they wouldn't.
When I graduated high school, you wrote your name on a slip of paper and handed it to the teacher, who would read your name off of it as your crossed the stage. A bunch of boys changed theirs to funny prankster names, rock stars, etc. Robert Jones became Robert Plant, etc. It was pretty funny and lightened up a pretty boring part of the ceremony. Not sure fun like that is allowed anymore.
tarotfindsandmore
·4 months agoOh I know, I just used your post to highlight the ridiculousness of the OP's post. It's just a name.
I went to school with a girl named Debbie Dripps, for real, and every year in home room the boys (and a few girls) would snicker when the teacher would call "Ms. Dripps?" when taking attendance.
As usual, you and I are on the same page. 🙂
grann-4629
·4 months agoThat is hilarious ... something my kids would have done! My partner, who worked in schools for over 30 years and did more than a few grads tells me it probably wouldn't work anymore as all of the teachers know the names of the pranksters in their school these days.
Fun, for the most part, is not 'politically correct' these days and has therefore taken a big hit ... there's lots of proof right here on your home forum!

·4 months agoOffensive speech — even hate speech — is protected speech. The point of those protections is to limit government punishment for speech that may be unpopular or offensive. A private business, however, can set its own rules and remove users or content, so long as it does not violate applicable discrimination or civil rights laws. If eBay wanted to disallow the use of fake names, they certainly could. It's probably not in their business interest to do so, because the fact is a simple search in the right places will show you the legal names and addresses of people by the very name @oldwestcoins says is on their order. With all due respect to the OP, they are making an assumption because the name in question and similar variations are valid, legal names and are tied to addresses in Florida, Pennsylvania, Washington, Rhode Island, Maine, and California.

Meanwhile, your bestie buyer Joe Friendlee pimps out his wife and kids, but he's got a nice name so its ok.
Some people are offended by Christian or Moslem or African names.
Some people need to be offended all the time so they can feel some kind of moral superioriry over everyone. I'm sick of it.

·4 months agoShip to the buyer and move on. Yes you will have some buyers who will use another name in shipping on the shipping label. That is the buyers issue not yours. If USPS or any carrier has an issue with it the item will get returned to you as the seller and that is when they will need to correct that issue.

·4 months ago@oldwestgold or @oldwestcoins Is the "address name" different from the "buyer name" like I had on this order below ('Michael S.' vs. 'Craig N.'). Of course it's perfectly fine for a buyer to edit the shipping name and address, like if they're sending an item as a gift or whatever.

I'm just asking if the "offensive" name is also the Buyer name on your order screen.

·4 months agoI don't disagree that it's disturbing to see that the buyer is using a racially charged name but if that's the name shown on the order and ebay says to ship, you should just ship it.
oldwestcoins
OP4 months agoI understand that. But people should not be able to use a different name like this on their own. Company names, obviously, are acceptable. And no, I don't believe I should help feed hate in any form, just because I am "required to" under eBay's policies. Any selling platform should have zero tolerance when it is brought to their attention. I have blocked the buyer. I don't need their money.
albertabrightalberta
·4 months ago@oldwestcoins
No, they shouldn't be allowed. But that's not your concern. Let ebay handle it.
You have a buyer, they paid for the item, ebay told you to ship so you ship!
If you cancel, you need to choose OOS/damaged and incur a ding on your account.
Do what you want to do. It's your account.
Frankly, I'm not sure why you came here to post about it if you aren't going to accept advice and plan to do what you want to do anyway.
I'm done here.
oldwestgold
·4 months agoRacial hatred like this should be everyone's concern. Let eBay handle it? How can they unless you tell them?
A ding on my acct isn't your concern. I have been here 27 years and understand how things work. A few ding don't mean anything, just like on this board.
Frankly, I don't know why you had to reply. You offered nothing.
I hope eBay reviews your mentor status, or you should look up the definition.
I'm done here.
