Heads up: changes to Seller Initiated Offers (SIO)
Recent & upcoming changes to SIO, the good and the bad.
First-
[Bug or intended?] eBay is forcing the default to "on" for automated offers and counter offers. As things stand today, sellers have to manually toggle off those settings every single time they send an offer if they don't want those settings active.
[Editing this post to add:] Several sellers in this discussion have pointed out it's also now defaulting to percentage off for single item offers when it formerly stuck to whatever setting the seller used last (percentage off or offer amount). Make sure to double-check all details before you send offers!
Hey @kyle@ebay , can you weigh in and confirm if that ^^ change is a bug or by design? These settings used to be sticky based on the seller's last used preference.
Click the ? icon on the bottom right of the page then select send feedback or report a technical problem if this change is problematic for you, or you can use the "tell us what you think" link on the bottom of the SIO pop up as pictured.
Second-
eBay recently launched an offers management dashboard. Currently only automated offers are included. Find it by visiting: Seller Hub > Marketing > Offers
Or click this: https://www.ebay.com/sh/mktv2/offers
Third-
eBay gave more info on that offers management dashboard at the May 7th Seller Check In.
Watch the video when released (eBay should post it on the Announcements page this coming week) if you want to see screenshots of what these changes will look like and get the full report, but highlights included:
The expansion to include all seller initiated offers on dashboard, not just automated, is currently anticipated for June.
There will eventually be more controls for automated offers including the ability to set duration for automation: 1 week to 1 year or custom duration.

·1 year agoHi everyone,
This thread has been closed at the request of the OP.
Thank you for understanding.

·1 year agoSomehow my last set of offers defaulted to automated. I caught it on the next batch, and now it's very easy to use the new Manage Offers page to go in and turn off automation in bulk
Nice upgrade.
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoI forgot to put this in the original post and it's too late to edit.
For those that did not turn off the offer confirmation page, eBay recently added a shortcut button for offers management.
It links to the page referenced in the second part of the original post (Seller Hub > Marketing > Offers).

·1 year ago@wastingtime101 Funny thing is, it could have been hours ago. I got involved in this & a few other threads & hadn't sent any for several hours LOL.
I actually didn't believe my eyes when I just had one go through normally, I had to triple check. Thank you for confirming, so I know it's global & I also pinged Kyle on my thread.

·1 year agoGuess what guys? GREAT NEWS!!! It's all back to normal now. I posted a thread here:
https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/SIO-s-Back-to-normal-defaults/m-p/35076980#M2562061
so that no one would miss seeing it on page 9 of this thread LOL.
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoThanks for the update. Checked on my end and confirming my defaults are also back to "normal" (no counters, no automation).
FYI @kyle@ebay - you can ignore earlier pings asking you if it was an error or intentional. Seems clear it was a tech bug, now fixed. ðŸ‘
P.S. To all sellers that read the original post and followed my suggestion to use the ? icon to report a tech error: thank you!
gurlcat
·1 year agoThe offer type also defaults to whatever the last one you used as well. I sent an 'Offer amount' to some watchers on one item, closed the tab completely, started over and opened the offer screen for another item, and 'Offer amount' was the default.
But I swear to dog my eyes are not used to seeing 3 different offer types but WHATEVER!! 🤣
kyle@ebay
Hey @wastingtime101 this is great to hear! I'm glad it all got resolved already.
gurlcat
·1 year agoSo incredibly glad my prior cynicism about the changes being intentional and permanent was WRONG! And this bug didn't even last very long at all.
Faith restored!!!
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@gurlcat I'm so glad, but I wouldn't go that far personally. We don't really know if it was a intentional & meant to be permanent or not. I put in my thread, I had been sending a c/p message in the 'Tell us what you think' with every single offer I sent the last 2 days. Around 50 times in other words. Took a LOT of time & effort on my part.
Maybe it was an unintentional change from updates, but it could also have been intentional & they saw all the angry posters here & changed their minds. My money is on unintentional, but I've heard from people already who don't agree with me. I'm pretty sure we'll never know😀 I'm just blown away that they fixed it on the weekend & I am working on sending a thank you with every offer now!

·1 year ago@kyle@ebay @fern*wood
Another aspect of this is that suddenly the Checkbox entitled "Don't Show Sent Offers Again" which controls whether or not you get the Confirmation pop-ups has suddenly reappeared on EVERY SINGLE LISTING for those of us who had turned it off months ago (in other words checked the box). At least it's happening to me, I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't recall having seen that since the day I checked it & never saw it again.
In addition, despite the fact that it is appearing out of the blue again even though I elected NOT to get confirmations, it's not sending me confirmations again, so why is it UNCHECKED & NOT sending confirmations? There's a disconnect somewhere. Meanwhile, probably due to that disconnect between the screen & the actual purpose of the checkbox, @fern*wood is trying to turn it ON for the first time & can't get it to work. It's really unclear what the programmers intended here, so if you could just pass it along, I'd appreciate it. Ideally it should take your prior setting & you should see it or not based on what your prior setting was. There s/b no disconnect between the screen display & the function.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@gurlcat On the main SH>Active screen, there are now 3 blue boxes center stage, right under the Expand you Business with 10K banner. I call them blue boxes, @wastingtime101 knows their official name, but I'm bad with remembering marketing-speak. If you select it from here, you'll only have 2 options as I showed in the screen shot above. Wasting is right, that it's b/c this is a bulk option too. I forgot it was bulk b/c I don't use it.
Sorry the blue is hard to see in my shot, I amped up the contrast to show it better.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@wastingtime101 Got it, you're right, the 'blue boxes' are a form of bulk offers, I tend to forget that b/c I don't use them, but they are. Sorry, I forgot the fancy marketing name you told me they're called.

·1 year agoNormally I just don't care about ebay changes. But I don't want counteroffers. Ever.
This is costing me time, and time is money. It is also costing me customer goodwill as I have to decline every single counteroffer I am getting from before I noticed the change. The 11,000 of my items that are trading cards are priced at exactly the point that makes them worth doing, including their promotion level and the offer level I send. 5 cents cheaper and they are not worth dealing with.
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoYeah and the extra frustrating part about that is there’s no bulk action to turn off counter offers after the offer is sent.
Hoping this is just a bug they can fix Monday or Tuesday but we’ll have to wait to find out.
sylvan_belle
·1 year agoAm I just slow on the uptake today, or what? After the initial shock of this change, and not immediately noticing the full extent of what was going on, I actually had to end several listings to rectify my mistakes. At the time, I noticed there were (I thought) two options: percent off, or offer amount.
Revisiting the situation, I'm now seeing three options: percent off, amount off, or offer amount.
I almost sent an unintentionally low offer - I thought I was sending an "offer amount," but it was actually an "amount off," and I almost offered an $850 item for $300.
What a hassle.
Yes, I think I will be taking a break from "send an offer." Too bad, because I actually liked this feature, but now I am thoroughly turned off by it.
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoThat part isn't new @sylvan_belle . With bulk SIO you'll only see 2 options, but with individual SIO you'll see all 3.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@sylvan_belle There have always been 3 options there. Though there is one screen where I know you only see 2 of them.
gurlcat
·1 year agoJust in case you're feeling crazy now, I don't recall ever seeing "Amount off" before either. And I am talking about piecemeal offers, not bulk (I never do bulk offers). I swear there were always only the 2 other choices. Now two very knowledgeable members have replied that there were always 3 and so I'll just have to accept that they're right, but I guess that means you and I are the same kind of crazy.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@gurlcat @sylvan_belle There are a couple of screens that only have 2, but the screen when you send an offer individually has always had 3. I know Wasting posted one of them, but I never use that one & I know I've seen a place where there are only 2 choices. If I come across it, I'll come post it here b/c I don't remember what screen it is. Oh wait, maybe I do. Let me go test something...
Ok found it! If you use the new 'blue boxes' on the SH front page, you only get 2 options. It's about how you navigate. See screenshot below. I think this is different than what @wastingtime101 posted, but I'm not going back pages to find it. My apologies if it's the same. LMK if you need a screen shot of the blue boxes.
gurlcat
·1 year agoYeah all I ever send is individual offers, and I have never seen it say 'Amount off'. And I couldn't have missed it because of a 'space' or 'size' issue, because it's right in the middle between the other two! I feel like there have even been discussions about these before, where it was always the problem of someone accidentally choosing the one (of only two) that they didn't mean to.

I'm not trying to start a big fight over it though. It is now 3 choices, which doesn't even make sense because it's REDUNDANT. There don't need to be two "amount" choices since they're essentially the same thing and only someone with a severe math problem couldn't figure out how to just calculate their 'Offer amount' if they want to take 3 bucks off or whatever.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year agoBUt it's not redundant. All 3 are different & valid & commonly used. I get what you're saying, but math is not a lot of people's strong suit. It's been 3 choices, as long as I can remember, even before the current screen.
Also, not sure if you saw it it, I did find the screen where there are only 2 & I posted it above. I *think* this is a different screen than Wasting is talking about, but I didin't go back to find his posts.
ETA; And yes there have been discussions cuz sometimes people choose the wrong one & sometimes eBay changes the default on us.
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoIt's the same screen @simply-the-best-for-you , but I cut off the right side that showed the items. Screenshot you're looking for is up in the OP.
I've had all 3 options on individual offers since the beginning, or close to it.
Even on the app I get all 3 options.
But again - it's only on single items.
When you send bulk, one of those options disappears (with pretty good reason). Your screenshot with 2 options? That's 'cause it's a bulk offer - in other words, sending offers on more than one item at a time.
gurlcat
·1 year agoI don't know what new blue button you mean.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year agoBlue boxes. I'll post a screen shot.
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoThey're called Opportunities.
In the beginning they were called Sell It Faster banners, but later changed to Opportunities.
They appear above active listings in Seller Hub and they're FREAKING ANNOYING!!
Those stupid things you X out and they reappear later the same day and push your active listings further down the page.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year agoThank you. I was remembering the "sell it faster" that you told me. So hard for me to remember. That led to me getting a message that I started a thread about on a private board about, entitled "Congratulations, you Actioned an Opportunity". Bet @gurlcat gonna love that one about as much as I did LOL.

·1 year agoSo exciting to see eBay change a bunch of things that don't need any change and neglect the REAL things that need changed. AND while doing it screwing up everything else so I can't list properly or people can't purchase my items. GREAT JOB ONCE AGAIN EBAY!
an-57470
·1 year agoThis feels like a step backward in user control. If these SIO settings are now defaulting without remembering seller preferences, it disrupts workflow and increases the chance of sending the wrong offer. Whether it’s a bug or intentional, sellers deserve consistency and the ability to set their own defaults, especially for something as crucial as pricing strategy. Hope eBay takes this feedback seriously.
gurlcat
·1 year agoSure hope Kyle comes back (Monday?) to report that it's just a bug, but I have a feeling it's not. All signs point to them being fine with purposely tricking (unaware) sellers into losing their items for less money than they wanted, and (aware) sellers into having to do more labor, to avoid that outcome.
I bet they're getting a quantifiable sales boost just from millions of "oopsies" right now. But like so many shortsighted corporate decisions, the urge to do whatever it takes to get a boost NOW, this one could very well backfire and result in a major drop of sellers willing to use SIO's in the long run.
sylvan_belle
·1 year agoI think it is also ridiculous that on the seller dashboard "manage your offers," it only indicates the original price, and not the amount of the offer I sent, or the date sent. That is not very helpful. I have people messaging me all the time "you sent me an offer for $$ three weeks ago, and now I want to accept it." I used to be able to see all offers - dates and amounts - that had been sent. Not now. .
jjddmwi
·1 year ago@wastingtime101 Thank you for this thread, it has been very helpful. I always come here when I have a question / problem and this place usually has the answer. ðŸ‘
Kind of ironic, as I was reading this thread, I got a pop up from Ebay to take a survey about the Ebay community.... I almost never do them, but this time I decided to. I wanted to give the community a huge thumbs up because it is so helpful and to let Ebay know that I find their actual customer service to be the total opposite. Well... I took the time to complete the survey, but when I hit submit, I got an error that that it could not be submitted and got re-directed back to the Community. 🙄
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoSee above @devon@ebay for Community survey error. Thanks.
adamcartwright
·1 year ago@jjddmwi
I guess not allowing you to submit is faster than accepting your survey and then filing it in the circular file. 😤

·1 year agoIf eBay doesn't reverse the default setting for automated offers or at least allow the seller to set their own default to either on or off, it all but guarantees that I will stop using the send offers function... which means less money in my pocket AND eBay's.
Stop messing with stuff and implementing barriers for sellers!
adamcartwright
·1 year ago@revenue-collector
Unless this is fixed, I won't be sending offers from my phone anymore -- only from my computer.
With the phone, it's too easy to rush and make mistakes.
Which means I won't be sending offers as frequently.

·1 year agoThis is so stupid, it seems every change ebay makes it becomes harder and more time consuming to sell here. Why? What in the name of all that is holy would make ebay do this? I have already had to end listings and relist multiple times because I realized it was sending percentage off offers. And I am sure if I miss one and somebody buys one of my items at some ridiculous discount when I cancel the sale ebay will ding my account….STUPID
gurlcat
·1 year agoI can give the *ostensible answer. It's the same reason they're now putting this above our Active listings in the Hub, and even if you 'x' it out, it comes right back the next time.

And it's the same reason they show you mostly the low-priced examples of similar items that sold, in that little popup thing when you're about to enter your item's price.

And the same reason they're always pushing us to send offers, create coupons, etc etc etc.
That is, they know they have a rampant over-pricing problem, millions of listings that will never sell at the current price, which eBay is hosting in their servers for very little or no money. In short, there are a lot of sellers ruining it for the rest of us. Now granted, sometimes a seller may keep something listed at an outrageously high price for a reason (like they're out of stock but expect to get more). But even that is sort-of abuse. And more often the situation is sellers simply having unreasonable expectations, like pricing their items based on active listing prices they see here (or on Posh or whatever).
In other words, the blind leading the blind.
And then there are sellers knowingly abusing the system. Here's a perfect example that just came up a few days ago. -Note the listing price compared to the actual price the item sold for, VIA SELLER INITIATED OFFER, mind you.
You see what they did there? Listed the item for a high price (honestly so high I'm surprised they got any watchers to send offers to!) and then got the sale by sending an offer, probably the amount they intended to get in the first place.
So basically you can picture some board meeting where the ole' topic of vastly overpriced items came up again, and somebody was like, "Hey let's make it so they can accidentally get the item sold a lot cheaper" (not in those exact words .... or maybe, heck I don't know maybe they do talk like cartoon villains when we're not there to hear them). 🤣
ekmadonna
·1 year agoAND They Keep Defaulting all my offers to a PERCENTAGE OFF instead of a SPECIFIC OFFER AMOUNT. I changed and toggled off both but EVERY LISTING I go to send offers on Keeps Reverting back to their settings. I got burnt on this once today. I am not thrilled to say the least.
adamcartwright
·1 year ago@wastingtime101
Thanks for the update.
That first one is really disrespectful to sellers, IMO.
It's a waste of my time to be unchecking boxes with every SIO. I get that they're trying to force us into automated offers, but enough with the manipulation.
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoI agree. I'm really hoping that's a bug they will fix and not an intended change. Whether it's a short-lived bug or not, I wanted to put sellers on alert to look out for it.
gurlcat
·1 year agoI sent an offer for only one listing a few hours ago, totally did not look at the toggles. Sure glad it's just the one!!

But hey I just noticed something. -Did the Counteroffer thing always have a quantified 'variance' like this "by up to 25%" ? I don't recall ever seeing any numbers in the explainer there, but then I detest back and forth haggling so I've not looked at that thing in a long time.
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoYes, that's been there as long as I can remember.
gurlcat
·1 year agoAnd I assume that overrides whatever minimum dollar amount I set up in my BIO settings ..... because eBay. 🤣
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoCorrect. Seller Initiated Offer operates independently from listing settings for Make Offer (buyer initiated).
gurlcat
·1 year agoWell the moment I get a ridiculous counteroffer that I didn't even want in the first place -that's the moment I end the listing and sell-similar it. They can play whatever stupid games they want with the settings but they can't make me play too.
gurlcat
·1 year agoWelp, all the more reason I'll be glad when that Offer Dashboard is fully running, so I can get a better idea of just how useful SIO's are (or aren't). As I mentioned recently, I've been wanting to see some numbers of which tends to be more effective for me, allowing BIO's or doing SIO's, because I do both, but I'd rather not.
And if SIO's are going to be this irksome, I'd rather stop messing with them at all. I have BIO's down to blissfully hands-off perfection, by having my minimum and auto-accept at the same dollar amount, so I never have to see lowballs or even ponder whether an offer is minimum 'enough.' Just hear that CHING, baby, that's all I want.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year agoJUST A REMINDER TO EVERYONE...
that it ALSO changes the DEFAULT TYPE of Offer to PERCENTAGE OFF. Sure enough, I already got caught. I remembered to do my 2 sliders but totally forgot to change my Offer Type back to the Dollar Amount & I sent one lower than I intended.
@kyle@ebay Please note that in addition to changing our slider defaults, this ALSO changed the default TYPE of Offer being sent & it's really easy to miss that. Esp b/c those of us who do a bunch go flying down the list & instead of offering $25, you can easily accidentally offer 25% off!
ekmadonna
·1 year agoGot burnt by this earlier today. Listing sold within a minute. at 20 percent off which was never my intention.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@ekmadonna Same! Minus the sale part LOL. At least this time around we get the pop up. You can see on fairly recent threads that I've had a problem with these being changed on me repeatedly in the past & most of the time without even the pop-up & to add insult to injury, I don't see those slider options on my screen without scrolling. Well, now I see one of them, in the past I saw neither of them, so it's really hard to remember they're even there if you don't see them. When this kept happening to me in the past, I sometimes didn't clock it at all & I was sending out tons of offers at PERCENT OFF instead of OFFER AMOUNT. Usually how I figured it out though is that I was suddenly getting tons of Counteroffers when I don't allow them EVER & each time, I'd be like 'oh no, eBay must have changed my defaults again' & sure enough I'd go check & that would be exactly what happened ðŸ˜
Between the extra 8-10 clicks that were added months ago & now this, it went from me being able to whip down the list at 10 seconds a piece to probably 45-60 seconds for each one. Barely worth it.
jenpicked
·1 year agoYes, please find out about the automatically "ON" toggle for counteroffers. We send hundreds of offers a day, and this is nuts. All day today, we've had to "remember" to toggle that back off. Sure it's a hassle, but what's worse is then it looks bad on the seller AND ON EBAY AS A WHOLE if you are not open to counter offers, when it sure looks like you've said you were because of that toggle.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@jenpicked Esp since many of us don't even see those 2 options on our SIO screens! Some of us have to scroll down to even see them & so a lot of sellers don't even know they're there. At least today we got popups to alert us. I can't tell you how many times I got the bug where they were reset & the only way I found out is b/c I suddenly started seeing counteroffers. I hope @kyle@ebay sees jenpicked post b/c it's just more extra work for those of us who send hundreds. The last thing I need beyond the 8 extra clicks they already added in the whole Offer screens is now to add 2 more toggles that have to be done for every single offer. Honestly, I will probably stop sending offers if this is an intentional or permanent change. Way too much time & effort for so little return.
gurlcat
·1 year agoNot making the last toggle choice 'sticky' is unacceptable, period. But just wanted to say, about whether you can see the toggle status might depend on your computer's current 'text size' setting. Like on my Macbook pro, enlarging text is performed with 'Command +' and shrunk with 'Command -' . I use it these all the time, especially on eBay because of all the things I'm afraid of missing if they're enlarged 'out' of a visibility window.

To show what I mean, here's what it looks like when the text is big enough for me to read without my glasses and a full arm's length away. -This is like you describe, no toggles visible.
Now with just one 'Command -' I can see the Automated toggle.
And with one more 'Command -' I can see both toggles. (But then I also have to hunch in close to read the smaller text, hey gotta keep my dowager hump growing!)
If you have a PC it's probably a whole other key combo, but I'm sharing just in case you didn't know it was possible to do this kind of thing. And yeah, we shouldn't HAVE to, because our choices shouldn't be commandeered by a company resetting them to the ones they think "best" every dang time. But anyway .....
ittybitnot
·1 year agoTo show what I mean, here's what it looks like when the text is big enough for me to read without my glasses and a full arm's length away. -This is like you describe, no toggles visible.
@gurlcat
Thank you for taking the time to post the screen shots in your message #12. It was interesting to note that the SEND OFFER button was visible even when the preselected default buttons were not.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@ittybitnot Just FYI, it's not just text size that will do it. Screen size as well, possibly different browsers, there's a variety of possibilites. I don't adjust my text size & I've always had this problem. I did adjust my screen size however, ages ago, which is probably my reason. Still a standard screen size & only a tiny change from 'normal' but enough to make a difference. That's why I crow about this all the time here. A lot of people don't even realize those 2 questions are there! Now they give us the pop-up warning, but that's fairly new. When the options have changed in the past (I've had it happen about 10 times), there was no pop up, so suddenly I'm flying through my SIO's & I'm sending percent off without realizing it & I don't realize counteroffers are turned on, b/c I don't see it until suddenly I start getting a bunch of counters. Ughh.
ittybitnot
·1 year agoJust FYI, it's not just text size that will do it.
@simply-the-best-for-you
I appreciate the clarification. Now that you mention it, I recall when my previous monitor died. I had an OLD smaller 'spare' in the closet with a rather square shaped screen that was resurrected for this unexpected turn of events. I remember having to scroll 'side to side' there for a while ...LOL.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@gurlcat Thanks. I don't wanna quote the whole thing, but yes, I'm well aware of what can be causing it. It's more likely the screen size, but same idea.
FYI, it is CTL/+ - or 0 to go back on a PC too 🙂 But that's not my issue as I only use those in brief limited circumstances.

·1 year agoThose 'choices' ALWAYS had to be toggled 'off' when sending any type of offer- as of last Winter when I was doing it every 2 weeks or so. At least 5 times, always had to make sure they were 'off'.
simply-the-best-for-you
·1 year ago@stainlessenginecovers That's true on the mobile app. It's not true & never has been the web side. I send around 50 offers a day, every day mainly from the web. There was however a bug that would occasionally revert them though, so if you weren't doing it daily, it's possible you were affected by that bug. Normally I can go months without changing them.

Do you know if there will be the ability for sellers to set the duration of the offers sent? (actual time of the offer before it expires)
wastingtime101
OP1 year agoIf you're referring to SIO lasting for 4 days, this came up at the Seller Check In and we were basically told this will not be an option.
eBay understands it blocks sellers from revising their listings, but didn't seem to think it's enough of a problem to change the offer duration - not even with the push for more sellers to use automated offers.
eBay understands the Time Away issue (sorta) and basically said sellers need to plan for that, obviously not factoring in sellers don't always have 4 day warnings for weather events, emergency situations, etc. Not to mention sellers that don't require auto-pay on offers which means their buyers may have an additional 4 days to pay.
In my opinion, the 4 day window wouldn't be so bad if Time Away extended handling time on SIO like it does for fixed price listings.
