Has anyone received one of these recently off the Community Board?
Summary: oldwestgold asked about receiving a suspicious direct message, and eburtonlab responded, clarifying it was a scam common on the eBay Community Board. inhawaii expressed skepticism about users falling for it, while buyselljack2016 argued that not all users are equipped to identify scams. Participants discussed difficulties in managing these messages, with advice provided by lacemaker3 on hiding unwanted messages. Multiple users shared experiences of receiving similar messages, indicating an ongoing issue with scam DMs despite eBay's previous attempts to address it.
I received this direct message today, as shown on the left, straight from the eBay Community Board.

·Sep 10, 2026 at 2:16 AMI just got two more of these scam DM's just today - I now have 7 of them that I cannot delete. One of them had the 3 dots on the right of the scammer's id. I clicked it so I could 'flag' it as others have suggested. It took me to the scammer's message but there were no options to report or flag it.
This is an on-going problem on the new forum. They have turned it off, made a fix, turned it back on and the same problem appears. I realize that many members like the DM feature, but I think it's time to kiss it goodbye forever.

·Sep 10, 2026 at 1:05 AMI received the same notice except the first 8 character of User ID are the same and the last characters are different. I'm not seeing a way to delete user IDs of those who've sent DMs.

·Sep 10, 2026 at 12:11 AM · Edited@inhawaii , If you click on "View all" under the messages, it will open up an expanded list of the messages you have received. [You can also see what date the last message was sent this way.]
Then, you can hover your cursor over a message, and 3 vertical dots will appear on the far right, next to the message. If you click on those, there is a drop-down list of available actions. One of them is "Hide conversation". That should remove that message thread from the list.

·Sep 10, 2026 at 1:27 AM@lacemaker3 Thanks for the info,Lace...........I know nothing about programing, so finding the "hidden" stuff is difficult.
I do note that Bevy found their way into our messages as the spam messages have changed.......the wording, format, and the fraud link has been inactivated. I doubt it's over tho.....

·Sep 10, 2026 at 3:25 AMThank you @lacemaker3 !!!
Great information.
And you spelled it out so nicely even an idiot like me could do it.

·1 month agoYes, I received like 10 of them today.
Anyone stupid enough to fall for that deserves it.

·Sep 10, 2026 at 2:27 AMSeriously................. ? Stupid..................?
not all eBay users are as clever as you are. Some could easily be alarmed and click links to respond when getting such a warning.
Theoretically ............ not sure if the %age is correct, but 49% of us could fall for it because we are below "average" intelligence. (on the stupid side of average)
I did not click on the one that I got, but that does not mean I am on the upper side of average :) ( I just did not see it for several days, and it had been discussed on the boards by then)

·Sep 10, 2026 at 3:27 AMI often admit to being slightly below average intelligence.

·Sep 10, 2026 at 12:18 PMIt’s not being clever, it’s basic online literacy.
We’ve heard for years, maybe decades now not to click on links in emails, messages, SMS, etc from people we don’t know and to even be wary when we think we know the sender.
Don’t get me wrong, the Bevy boards are a hot mess, but we dealt with potentially harmful links posted by fly by night members all the time with Khoros. Only difference is that they’re in DMs this time.

It is a scam. eBay does not send messages from user accounts with links to verify anything. That is something that scammers often do.
eBay recently shut down the community message feature for several days to prevent such messages, but apparently turning the feature back on allows the old scam messages with the scam link to be seen once again, even though new messages with links should be blocked now.
grann-4629
·Sep 10, 2026 at 2:19 AMObviously from my experience today and as others have reported, new messages are not being blocked.
