Getting in trouble for selling items you don't have
See it on here every day, sometimes more. Somebody gets canned because they are cancelling orders on items they don't have.
I've always been skeptical of the stories. Thinking, "yeah, you screwed up somehow, not eBay".
BUT, I cannot figure out where/how I screwed up.
I sold a fuel pump, couldn't find it, had to cancel.
I recognized it as a listing that I recently ended, and "sell similar".
Researched it and sure enough, that fuel pump sold two weeks ago.
The listing that sold 1st was listed 5/01/26 (it was ended, sell similar listing).
The listing that sold 2nd was listed 2/22/24 (obviously not ended...or ????)
My method is simple.
From active listings, I END the listing.
Then I go to inactive listings, and SELL SIMILAR.
It's not possible that I can "sell similar", a listiing that was not ended.
Any ideas on where I went wrong?

I do it all the time with active listings, so it is possible.
Instead of being inactive was the listing out of stock? You can create a listing using sell similar on that too, so you would have two listings - one active and one out of stock with a sale date.

OP4 months agoSorry, The way I do it, it's not possible for ME to sell similar without the listing being ended.
I ONLY sell similar from ended (inactive) listings.
Never used the Out Of Stock. Have no idea even how to do that.
Only thing I can think of, somebody mentioned above. Is that I accidentally listed it twice back in 2024.

Am I looking at the wrong listings or was the 1st sold one revised on 3/28/26 prior to being listed on 5/1/26 while the 2nd sold had not been revised even once since it was listed on 2/22/24? ...plus a 3rd copy in active listings that was put up on 5/21/26? I must be looking at the wrong listings.
redlinear
OP4 months agoMore than likely wrong listing.
The listing in question is on a different ID

·4 months ago@redlinear Out Of Stock- it's a program you can use on ebay that allows the listing to stay 'alive' with ZERO available.
Not sure if everyone or sometimes 'some' of us were 'put in that program' automatically needing to 'opt out'....but I just thought it was a possibility that kept that listing alive??

The 2024 listing date means it was never "ended".
It could not have been in inactive unless it was Ended.
jonathanbrightlight
·4 months agoA possibility that occurs to me is that you could have accidentally double listed it originally, one copy of it was ended and relisted multiple times over the years while the other was untouched, and thus you now have one original listing and the other that is a newly relisted copy of the duplicate listing from 2024.
redlinear
OP4 months agoMaybe...at least that is possible

·4 months agoMake sure you delete after ‘sell similar’
tobaccocardyahoo
·4 months agoThere are so many ways for a seller to cause this problem.
My history of having items I cannot fulfill is items that I have relisted. The initial listing had a quantity of greater than 1, and when I relisted, I had only 1.
Add time to compound my errors and it can be very disconcerting and confusing.

·4 months agoMaybe eBay could automatically warn about ended relistings with a message like, "You ended this listing on 00/00/26. Are you sure you want to relist?"
It gives you a moment to think it over, like the opposite of the “Are you sure?” warning you see when deleting something.

·4 months agoThat's an excellent idea, But do you think ebay will implement it?
krazzykats
·4 months agoProbably not... sigh... I think having more control over what you want to see and what you don’t, would help. I’ve always hated ads constantly being shoved in my face for things I’ll never use. Same with products I’ll never buy, use, or even care about.
Sometimes I just shut off all digital devices for the calm......lol!

·4 months agoNo, but do you automatically delete your ended listing after you’ve ’sell similar’ it?
I do, and I only do one at a time, but I also usually run around 310 listing only.
Sometimes when I am ending a listing that is 2-3 months old and expiring to relist as ‘sell similar’
a copy can end up in my ‘Drafts’ listings.
Sorry this happened to you- I know you know to message your customer and see if you can fix it.

I think that is exactly what happened to me recently, when I was doing a bulk end/sell similar.
Somehow, two of the listings got listed twice.
I only noticed it by the active listing count being higher than I remembered.
Ran a dupe check and discovered two dupes.
I think they were somehow saved in Drafts and I must have listed them from there, as well as listing them from the bulk editor screen.
redlinear
OP4 months agoIt never got ended though. The listing date was 2/22/24.
If it was never ended, how did I "sell similar" it from inactive listings?
I'm confused
klhmdg
·4 months ago@redlinear
I sell similar from inactive listings all the time.
IF you do not delete the listing from unsold it stays there and can be relisted.
Sell Similar doesnt remove the listing from unsolds.
redlinear
OP4 months agoCorrect, I "delete" as soon as the sell similar is done.
BUT, if I had missed one. And accidentally "sell similar" to it again. The listing date would be new.
That's my confusion. That old listing date.

·4 months agosreu3058 - This my friend is an excellent point. We here in New Jersey always double check & triple check that we have deleted "unsold" items that we have relisted as "sell similar." We also do this one at a time so as not to confuse ourselves. Also, new "drafts" that have shown up of items that have gone to "sell similar" need to be deleted as well. It can be very easy to make a mistake and one must be extremely careful. Thank You - sreu3058 - for sharing this.
