First time seller
I am a first time seller. I needed to upgrade my laptop to run LLMs (AI) so I need to sell my 2021 model. As a first time seller can I list it for $1400? I thought I saw somewhere there was a limit ($500?) for first timers?

I would NOT sell that laptop here on eBay or any other internet venue, especially being a new seller. Scams run rampant and you are the target, trust me. Sell your laptop locally for cash, that way you'll get cash and avoid the outcome of possibly losing the laptop and the money as well. Don't do it.
Good luck

Everyone above gave great input and your running a risk selling anything online so make sure you weigh that out, wouldn't recommend a new seller to start out with a higher end laptop. You may be targeted by a scammer as well so figure how to prevent that if it does happen prior to selling but if you still feel confident in listing on eBay and get your account setup properly to do so ... I suggest the below tips for laptops/tablets
Being someone who has sold over $ 30,000 in used laptops&tablets on eBay (mostly Dell), I suggest you price fairly, describe everything to a T on the listing, as much information as possible, take as many pictures as possible to get all angles of the laptop, get insurance on the item, if the laptop sells make sure to drop the laptop off personally at the mail office and request a receipt. Use USPS expedited shipping, over pack the laptop, fill all air voids in the packing box and make sure it cannot move by shaking the box.
Ideally the laptop should be hovering in the air inside the box, lightly compressed. Also make sure to have a microfiber/silk/anti scratch cloth cover over the entire laptop if it doesn't have its original box/packing shell.
I've never been scammed selling a laptop/tablet and have prevented fraud a few times over the years, but yes they have tried
. Educate yourself on scams and buyers to look out for on ebay
. Review other sellers of similar products for your own market research
. Make sure to list all scratches, dents, dings, ANY DAMAGE and show clear zoomed in pictures of it
. Never sell a laptop to anyone in Florida inside the city of Doral. (Contact ebay if sold here, their well aware)
. Only sell to the lower 48 states in the US, assuming you live in one
. Take personal pictures (more the better) of the screws on the back the laptop and I'd suggest opening the laptop and also taking pictures of the inside internals - mainly looking at RAM and HD here but also how everything is staged inside and the outside.
. Take a picture of the laptop in the packing box before its covered up and also when its sealed with its shipping label
. Also taking a personal video of basic operations of laptop helps as well
. List all stats of the laptop and any extra components that come with it, including charging adapter
. The title listing specifics you'll want is : manufacturer and type of laptop, ram size, hard drive size, processor, and its OS.. an example header could be :
Dell Latitude 5285 2-in-1 Tablet, Intel i5-7300U 8GB Ram- 256GB SSD Win10 Pro
Good luck in selling your laptop in whatever way you choose to sell it!

·2 years agoEven experienced sellers do not know all of the scams used for high ticket easy to fence items, and compiling an online list would be a recipe book for crooks.
This is not to say that there are not laptop sellers who rip off their buyers, either.

The big difference is the buyers are covered 8 ways to Sunday through the MBG, their financial institutions and the current federal laws.

·2 years agoI'm no computer expert, I leave all that too my husband, he is my techie. But if you feel you can sell your current laptop for $1400, what kind of laptop is it.
I ask because I have a 3 year old Surface Pro that cost a couple hundred more than what you feel your current laptop is worth, and it does fine with Ebay and pretty much anything else I have a use for it. I'm sure you know what is the right thing to do for you, I'm simply curious.

As others have suggested: eBay + newbie seller + high dollar electronics = recipe for disaster
The scammers will be on you like white on rice. It would be prudent to sell this locally for cash at this point. It would be to your best advantage to learn about and recognize the typical scams pulled on such transactions. You can research the terms and read here to find out about the "usual suspects" and how the scenarios play out:
*Text me scammer
*Two types of change of address scammers
*How to recognize an international buyer who is using a Freight Forwarder, BEFORE you get taken by a phony claim.
*Fake tracking return scam
Also keep in mind that just about anything can be had on eBay at the seller's expense with the right kind of phony claim. Though you can somewhat lower your risks, it is best to never sell something here that you cannot afford to lose.

Add in a half dozen other type of scams, empty box, switcheroo and of course the worst a NAD chargeback. For the OP if they list this is a disaster waiting to happen.

·2 years agoAs all other responders have said. It's best not to sell your laptop here. Too many scammers looking to con a newbie. Sell it locally.

·2 years ago@tbear12345 : Like the above (and everyone else) says: Selling that here would be a recipe for disaster. Scammers would be lining up to take a shot at you. Sell it locally for cash.

·2 years agoThere are many horror stories on this board about new sellers who were scammed out their laptops or cell phones. Sell your laptop locally on Facebook or CL. You should start out on ebay selling less expensive items to understand how it all works. That way if you make a mistake it won't cost you much. Shipping in particular can be a little complicated at first. We all want you to succeed here on ebay!

My suggestion is to sell it locally for cash and not on eBay.
You are a new seller. You have no experience as to how eBay works.
Before listing, learn eBay’s Money Back Guarantee.
Do you know how much it costs to sell here? Selling it for $1400 doesn’t ever mean you’re getting $1400 into your bank account.
Are you okay with having your payment held for 30 days? Have you set up your checking account to accept payments?
Are you prepared should a buyer open a credit card chargeback on the Labor Day weekend?
Never list what you can’t afford to give away.
Selling it locally for $1200 cash is something to consider.

·2 years agoUnless you can afford to give it away, I wouldn't list it here.
There's a good chance you would loose the laptop and any payment made.

·2 years agoYour limit should be posted in your seller hub Overview page. Check that first before listing.
There's a few things before you sell such a costly item.
First you need to sign up with managed payments with a checking account ( routing and account numbers) for your payout. You may also be asked for your social security number.
Second when you do sell your funds will be on hold for approximately 30 days, you may be required to submit proof of ownership of the laptop.
Third, and this is very important as well. There are scammers out there who target new sellers selling laptops computers and other tech items. They will con you into taking the transaction off eBay. By asking you to call them send you fake paypal payment etc.
When you do really get a sale it will be in your items awaiting shipment. You will still be able to purchase a label even when your funds are on hold.
Come back here and ask any questions that you may have.
Good luck!
