Fees are now based on "Item Price," "Sales Tax" and now a new category "Other." What is the "Other" category? Why are charged fees for eBay collecting the sales tax from the buyer and now this new "Other" category. Sellers should only pay the final value fee for "Item Price" and "Shipping." I think sellers are being soaked by eBay!

·1 year agoMore and more states are charging additional fees on top of sales taxes to the buyers. So it isn't a fee you will pay as a seller, the fees are paid by the buyer. However sellers pay the FVF to Ebay for the entire amount a buyer pays.

At least Four Thousand Six Hundred Items sold and you're just now reading the complete description of the Final Value Fee (FVF) percentage?
"Other applicable charges" has been considered part of the Total Amount Paid By The Buyer for years and years.
There are actually five things that eBay adds up to arrive at the Total Amount Paid By The Buyer: (1) Item price + (2) sales taxes paid by the buyer + (3) shipping costs paid by the buyer + (4) any handling cost charged by the seller + (5) "other applicable charges."
The FVF percentage is applied to the Total Amount Paid By The Buyer.
I always see this word in outraged posts like this one griping about eBay's Fee Policies: SHOULD.
Well, I think no eBay seller should be allowed to list, let alone sell, anything until they pass a written test proving how well they understand all the fee procedures, including reserve fees, promoted listing fees, and international fees.
I also think no eBay seller should be allowed to list, let alone sell, anything with a "free" shipping charge until they pass another written test proving that they fully understand that they, themselves, will have to pay USPS or FedEx or UPS to actually, you know, ship a "free shipping" item to the buyer, with no reimbursement from the buyer or from eBay or from anybody else.

OP1 year agoI've been buying and selling on eBay since 1999 and have NEVER seen this "Other" category, but now it appears on two of my sales in two days. As this effects how FVF are calculated I think an intelligent person would question what it is. eBay customer service was unable to tell me what "Other" is. I only used "Fixed Price" listings. I need to know what this ABSOLUTELY BRAND NEW "Other" category is and how far up it could raise my FVF. Take your immature, unintellegint, snarky attitude elswhere.

OK. On two of your recent sales, in the calculation that is entitled "What your buyer paid" you see $0.29 described as a Retail Delivery Fee. You don't know what that means. There's an asterisk next to it. Did you look further down the page for, like, a footnote or explanation of what the asterisk means?
Way back in Message 7 in this thread, "steady2034" gave you the reason for those 29-cent charges: The state of Colorado imposes those charges on people living there and/or businesses operating there, with delivery addresses in the state of Colorado. Were those two delivery addresses in the state of Colorado?
Colorado first started charging this delivery fee on July 1, 2022.
Doesn't it seem logical or obvious, then, that these two recent sales with Colorado delivery addresses are the first two times you've sold to Colorado since July 1, 2022? That's the most obvious reason why those charges look "NEW" to you.

eBay charges different FVF percentages for different categories of items. I didn't take the time to look up what you sold, to find out what the FVF percentage would be, but here is the math for low, medium, and high FVF percentages:
6.35% (guitars): $0.29 x 0.0635 = $0.018415, rounded up to $0.02. Two Cents.
13.25% (most categories): $0.29 x 0.1325 = $0.038425, rounded up to $0.04. Four Cents.
15% (jewelry): $0.29 x 0.15 = $0.0435, rounded down to $0.04. Four Cents.

OP1 year agoThanks steady2304 ! I usually only look at "Transaction Details" for the bookkeeping. I will now use "Order Details" for bookkeeping. Two calls to eBay customer service and they were not able to tell me what "Other" is. I will have to adjust my "Fixed Priced" listings to protect myself from unpredictable "Other" effecting my bottom line.

The total amount of the sale includes the item price, any handling charges, any shipping costs collected from the buyer (some exceptions apply), sales tax, and any other applicable fees.
... but the link is subtle and is labeled "sales tax" which is not really accurate because sales tax is only one of the many taxes described on the linked page. It would be far more helpful if eBay re-titled the link to be more accurate, like "any other taxes" or "any sales tax or other taxes" or something link that.

·1 year agoSo far there are only 2 or 3 states which impose a "retail delivery fee" and the highest one is 50 cents per transaction, so the impact on your overall final value fees probably doesn't justify adjusting your prices or handling fees.
As noted in the other posts, there are specialized "other" fees such as for tires and electronics, which have been in place for much longer and which apparently don't affect the range of merchandise that you offer.

·1 year agoIt is something that to my knowledge just started happening in 2024. Some states have put an add on to Sales tax. For various reasons, but the most common one I've seen is for Roads.

Other could be those other fees some states are charging like road improvement or food delivery fee. Colorado, Minnesota and Washington charges this fee.

Not to mention other fees charged by the state where the item is going to be delivered.
In California we have a Tire Recycling Fee. It's charged to buyers of vehicle tires, and helps to pay for the recycling of old tires.
In other states it might be a White Goods Disposal Fee. That is charged to buyers of kitchen furnishings like refrigerators or ranges. Same process: buyers of a new refrigerator in that state pay a White Goods Disposal Fee for -- just what it says !!
In my experience, these "other" charges on eBay don't happen too often. I mean, are there really a lot of people who buy new tires for their cars from eBay ?
