·1 year agoNot new at all. You offered something and a buyer(s) wanted it but you reneged. Ebay still wants the fees lost.

eBay didn’t single you out because they thought you were going off site. This would happen to every seller who stoped a rolling auction.

·1 year agoIf it had a bid, yes they charge the FVF for the amount it was at. That got added because some sellers were canceling auctions if they did not like the price the item was at. In the final 12 hours, you can only cancel bids, not the auction. It was too easy to start at a low price and cancel the auction in the final seconds. eBay stopped that.

·1 year agoI think it's a good thing eBay charged you for canceling out an auction that had 3250.00 on it already in bids. seems shady no matter what and leads to customer frustration. If i was setting policy I'd ban your account out if it happened more than once.

OP1 year agoDuring the auction I was told my item might not be as I described. Because of the price, to avoid a problem, I closed the auction to do more research on the item.

·1 year agoYou should have let the auction complete, and then explained to the winner the issue and ask them if they still wanted the item or if they would like to cancel.

FIRST you cancel all the bids.
THEN you end the auction.
Otherwise you're going to get charged (like you did).

·1 year agoThat's not a workaround. Ending the auction early will incur the penalty fee regardless of when or how you cancel the bids.

·1 year agoIf there are active bids on the auction, you have to pay the Final Value Fee.

OP1 year agoNo reserve. I closed the auction, it had bids. I made a mistake in the auction and closed the auction. I received no money.

·1 year agoWhat was the listing number? I cannot find any Completed (but not Sold) auction that could trigger a $433 FVF.

OP1 year agoIt says do you want to relist (it does not show a listing number for the original auction, they must just kill it) and has my starting bid of $65. It was bid up to $3250 when I closed the auction because of the error..

·1 year agoeBay doesn't care whether you received money. They have implemented a major disincentive for sellers to cancel auctions. As noted above, there is a penalty fee for canceling an auction after it has received bids. The penalty is the amount that would have been the final value fee if you had sold to the high bidder instead of ending the auction. There is no way for eBay to know the reason for you closing an auction that still has time remaining.
One of the reasons which I've read in the past is to prevent sellers from removing items from active eBay auctions (with bids) in order to sell them away from eBay, in order for the seller to avoid paying Final Value Fees.
It sounds as if eBay may have suspected that that was your intent -- that one of your bidders may have requested an "off eBay" sale, and that you closed the auction to sell "off eBay" to that buyer.
It will be interesting to find out how this "phantom" sale will effect your 1099-K for next year's taxes.

·1 year agoThere will be no effect on their 1099-K because they did not receive any payment for this transaction.
They will, however get to deduct the $433 penalty fee as a valid expense.

·1 year agoDid the auction have bids? If so, it's not new for eBay to charge a fee based on the highest bid.

Did the auction have a reserve? If so, that's a non-refundable listing upgrade charged when you list whether or not the item sells.
