Extreme winter storm
How are you going to deal with the epic winter storm that is supposed to spread across 30-40 States starting tomorrow? I imagine too many will see a large impact on sales? They figure 235 million will be affected by it. We are supposed to get our dose of it, In Ontario on Sunday. Only 8 ins. here. However, MANY days of windchill making it feel before -3F during the day & -14F at night.

·8 months agoI had time off until Wednesday but may extend it to Friday. Our problem is the ice. If it was only snow it would not be so bad.

·8 months agoWelp, I have to rescind my prior response because after I wrote it my throat started to get scratchy on the 23rd. The next morning I woke up with full on RSV, thanks to my great grandson, so I had to put the store on vacation mode. As my nan used to say man proposes, God disposes, but he sure didn't do it with the snow! We got 12" here in Staten Island. Not bad but slow going for the postal people today as much of NYC shovels out.
I hope that you all didn't get hit too bad!

·8 months agoIm just below Erie Pa and we get lake effect snow so its always snowy here. The cold however makes it 10times worse and cars don't start, ice don't melt, roads stay covered etc.. I do my best but people need to understand this stuff when they order so far no one has been hard to deal with this season.

·8 months agoGuess I won't be mailing anything today with over a foot of snow on the driveway and the snow plow just came by and added another foot at the end. Hope eBay will take these things into account like they used to do and not hurt my account because of it. BUT I guess we are just at the mercy of this brilliant company!

OP8 months agoSaturday was pretty good on MP. I had 3 pick ups. Sold 7 items. 3 others contacted me about purchases. The morning will be ok here, so I'm hopeful there will be more before the roads get nasty. I have not heard much about the storm in the States. Hear few details. I'm sure there will be plenty to check out on YT.

·8 months agoIf I am stuck inside due to the storm, and we are going to get it, I will be looking on eBay. If I am lucky enough to have power that is.

·8 months agoI did notice lately that I have cold weather items going to the South and warm weather items going to the North!!!

·8 months agoNo problem shoveling the snow. The problem is the plow putting the heavy ice chunks in front of my driveway, I clean that up using more strength, and then they come and do it again, making me re-shovel the area. There should be fines on snow-plow drivers who continually block driveways with street ice/snow (I mean we pay high property taxes just for that not to happen).
As for eBay, no problems at all. Saturday and Tuesday are shipping days like nothing happened. Just put handling time to 48 hours.

·8 months agoI am too. I put myself on time away then caved in and turned it off due to collapse of sales and surge of listings in "eligible to send offers" file. I caught up on mail so the soonest I have to deliver is on Wednesday. I am sure the PO will be open, the fun will be the condition of our side streets since it will be icy on top of snowy. And no immediate surge to 40 degrees to melt it all which is more typical than days of frigid temps.

·8 months agoThat will be the worst part. The below freezing temperatures expected throughout the week. The snow and ice that falls won't be going anywhere. I shut down until Wednesday. Selling collectibles, I don't have regular sales but when they come want to get them out.

·8 months agoWhere I live, seeing 15 to 20 F below zero is what we expect. There's blowing snow outside, about 2 inches in my driveway and it's so bitter cold I'm not going to deal with it until tomorrow afternoon (when it's going to only be 5 or 10 below. (Trying to say in F degrees for our US friends, although I'm not good with that - for the Canadians I mean -17C right now and -12C tomorrow).
I didn't go out today because the roads are terrible and I had to go to work so I stayed in at lunch instead of driving around the city getting my car stuck on ice in the bitter cold. (My car now has non-clumping kitty litter, Alaskan Ice melter, and a small shovel in case I get stuck again, it's hours to wait for a tow truck here).
I told my buyers of last night I wouldn't ship until Monday, they're all responding that they're putting up with a storm this weekend too (I got complaints from Texas and Wisconsin from buyers who identified where they live during the storm). Hopefully I will be able to go out Monday after all this drama, but I'm going to hurry up and pack orders and keep in contact with buyers.
On Monday I work at home, but will go out to mail stuff so long as the main roads are clear. That's the problem here right now, even the main roads are slippery and cars are getting stuck. I was a little stuck at an intersection and missed the green light as a result... guy behind me wasn't too thrilled, but my wheels were spinning and I wasn't moving very fast.
Driving around is all too much stress... perhaps I should take a taxi and let the driving be someone else's problem.

·8 months agoSince most of our items have longer processing times, and I'm in NYC, I'm not too concerned. It will be business here as usual. NYC Sanitation is all ready to get the streets cleared so our pick ups will hopefully continue within our shipping time.
Good luck everyone!

·8 months agoI am going to deal with it by ignoring it. My 5 day handling time will absorb any delays.
It is already have some effect here. Mail carrier picked up and delivered hours earlier than normal. Today's shipments missed the pickup. I am not taking them to the PO.
flp
·8 months agoI keep a 5 day shipping schedule also. Expected to get 12-18" over Sunday into Monday. Any sales I get will go out on Tuesday. Even though my carrier has on 2 occasions walked through snow to deliver mail, that much snow is too much as we won't even be plowed out until late Monday.

·8 months ago@sakic92710 ,
It’s -13F degrees outside with windchill of -35F degrees now. Doesn’t seem to be affecting me. Usually sell 40 to 50 items on average day and have sold 41 already and it’s still very early.

·8 months agoI expect Mon-Tues to be shutdown in the DC/MD/VA area and possibly Wednesday before it is safe to venture out. The post office will be closed or limited services. I took time away until Wednesday.

·8 months agoHi Everyone, With a one day handling time & only 150 items listed we here in N.J. were going to just "end listings" and "relist" when things get cleared up a bit. But, we do have a question will the listings thay we have offers out also end? Good Luck All!!

·8 months agoI had to extend my handling time to 3 days because of a non scanning sub so good until Wednesday. Rural with big hills here and the new PO vans don't do snow. Suppose to get 12" here in MO, so probably won't have mail until Wednesday at the earliest but if necessary I can run up and get it scanned at PO. My biggest worry is the major back up this storm will cause in the aftermath.

·8 months agoOf course it's no big deal to some. It depends on where you live. Do you need to drive? Do you lose electricity often? I'm guessing not. If I was within walking distance of the things I need like medical care, food or something as simple as mail service, I might not be too concerned either. Glad you can enjoy the snow, but no need to make light of others.
jewelbiz
·8 months agoGee fernwood,
I had absolutely no idea that my little post was making light of others.
Was not my intention at all!
fern*wood
·8 months agoYeah, I probably should have said no need to make light of of the situation rather than others. I have warm clothes and boots too, but sure don't want to wear them walking miles through the snow to the store.

·8 months agoI looked up your home town.
Kinda cool what I found pictured.

·8 months agoI live several miles out in the country. I've never lived in a town in my life because I grew up on a farm.
It frustrates me to hear some claim it's just snow, as if there is no need to be concerned at all. Yes, we get snow most years, but the extreme amounts and temperatures are dangerous, and unfortunately there will be deaths.
grann-4629
·8 months agoYou made the choice as to where you want to live knowing the potential hazards and possible inability to get supplies when you need them because of inclement weather.
There are people near me who live in what is called a 'flood plain'. They have been flooded before, and rebuilt in the same area. Even when they are denied insurance, they stay. Perhaps a little head-shake is needed here!
People are told to evacuate from a fire zone, and don't, thus risking the lives of rescuers.
Sometimes the risk is worth it ... sometimes it isn't. Unfortunately, common sense cannot be legislated so you have to decide on the level of risk you can tolerate from things like snow.
You're not entitled to leniency from the court for killing your parents just because now you're an orphan.
Sounds like you have been doing this for awhile ... keep it up and stay warm and safe and take it easy on those icy roads.

·8 months agoThe mid-west provinces in Canada have a lot of homeless, a lot of isolated communities, and losing power can last for days, provisions can run out. They're going to see 40 below this week. (F or C, it's the same temperature on both scales).

·8 months agoI always like to mention to people that I'm within walking distance (15 miles) of the hospital I was born in. By the way, my grandfather walked from West Virginia to Idaho at 14. Coal miner family. Mean daddy.
PS New Yorkers always think that the rest of the Country is just camping out I heard.
