ebay's "Vault"

As I recall, the main point of the ebay Vault was to stimulate ebay sales of trading cards etc.
Looks like ebay has thrown in the towel, and now the Vault is basically just......a glorifed storage unit. Anyone can send in stuff if it meets the qualifications, the stuff doesn't have to have any connection with ebay at all.
I haven't been following the Vault's progress closely, but when it was first announced, there was a lot of talk about expanding the categories that would be accepted. I don't know if ebay has concluded the demand isn't there for people to , say, house their designer purses in ebay's Vault, but the fact that they are now taking non-ebay related items suggests they've got a lot of empty space to fill up....
When ebay first announced the Vault, I admit I was skeptical, but I also felt it was a clear departure from "old ebay"---which had always been reluctant to make any real investment in storage, shipping logistics etc. And it did seem like ebay was signaling a real commitment to the Collectibles category (even if that was defined very narrowly).
But....as with so much ebay does....once the initial "excitement" faded, ebay seemed to forget about it. This has been a constant in ebay's history, and even former ebay employees have commented on it. Launch a new product, some new seller tool, make a big deal out of it for a few weeks or months and then....on to the next new shiny thing, and eventually: close it down because of low adoption.
It's like ebay stores. When the new CEO came on, for a brief time it looked like ebay was --- FINALLY----going to do something with stores. New design, new this, new that. But then........not much of anything.
I have to wonder, how long before ebay finally sells off the Vault?
I wish ebay success with the Vault, but I have a feeling it has not worked out as they had planned.

·3 years agoI see no problem at all allowing anyone to place an items in Ebay's vault. It has nothing to do with sellers who put things into the vault or buyers who buyers things from the vault. Not sure I am understanding your objection to the Vault. It is more or less with people who have too much $$ anyway.

OP3 years agoNot sure I am understanding why you think I object to the Vault. I don't. I also have no problem with ebay opening the Vault to others, that's ebay's choice. Perhaps my post was a bit too nuanced.
