Ebay's suggested Promo rates
I had to laugh when I just created a new listing, and ebay suggested a promo rate of 15.5%.
Decided to run an experiment by jacking up the price accordingly and going with their suggestion.
I'm pretty sure it'll end in disaster, but I'll let it run through the weekend and see how it goes.

·2 years ago15 percent promo plus 13 percent FVF eBAY GETS 28 percent of the items listed price. Hope you got it cheap because if you jack up prices way beyond competition IT WONT SELL, AND you and ebay make nothing.

·2 years agoDo these really work and do I have to pay more them? I don’t see the point of promoting 5 dollar and some cent prices for Yugioh cards. As for the books that I have to pay 25 cents to relist unsold items, I’m not sure how that would benefit me if I still have to pay the relist fee for the books. I found out that some categories let you relist for free and others require the 25 cent fee. If the promo option doesn’t require more fees, I might consider relisting the books more often. I’ve been slowing down relisting the books to slow down the fees. I do relist books that got a watch but didn’t sell in case they want to watch against and possibly buy. If you’re interested, I can send you the list of books I haven’t relisted yet.

·2 years agoThat is something that each seller has to decide for themselves. There is no one size fits all answer.
Yes if you use Promoted Listings you have to pay more in FVFs to Ebay. How else would that work? If sellers didn't pay more for using Promoted listings, then everyone could use it for free. Then every listing would be Promoted which would render the option absolutely useless.
If you feel paying more in FVFs to promote your listings, then you should do that. The seller sets the additional FVFs they are volunteering to pay if the item sells from 2% to 100%. Ebay suggested rates are just that, suggestions, the seller decides how much more they are willing to pay for a sale.
This page will give you the options within the Promoted Listing tools Ebay has available.

Given your long experience as an eBay seller, I wonder if you realize that you need not pay for relisting unsold items.?
Since you don't have a Store, you can list up to 250 item every month without a listing fee.
Is the 25c because your automatic relists of Fixed Price items push you over the 250 listing limit from time to time?
How much are you paying on average per month for those 25c relists?
You could open a Basic Store for~ $25 a month, have up to 1000 Fixed Price listings monthly, and get a small discount on selling fees plus a quarterly discount coupon for branded shipping supplies.
I am unclear on Best Offers with Stores. I use them on slow moving goods when they item has had Views , which happened in the last 30 days, but not on Watches, since those are basicallypermanent and might have happened last year.
Auctions make up less than 15% of transactions. Most Auctions, like yours, opt for either Best Offer or Buy It Now, which cut off the auction.
Books in particular are long tail items.
I sold a book yesterday which has been in stock since 2012. I have paid nothing to list it in those 12 years.

·2 years agoThat may been the case then, but when I relist unsold items, it says $0.25 fee shows up then. The yugioh cards and art pieces say relist for free at the bottom. It goes by category.

Listing fees over the 250 free listings per month is 35 cents for each listing.
For a Basic store to be helpful to any seller, they need to be listing over 300 each and every month. A Basic Store is $27.95 without a 1 year commitment and $21.95 with a 1 year subscription.

·2 years agoAt this rate eBay's business model is to just hope their remaining sellers are stupid enough to donate money to their dying enterprise. Doubt it serves any considerable returns in sales.

·2 years agoI posted an item and promoted it 15 % and it sold in about 3 hours and did not get charged the promoted rate.
I don't know when it kicks in...but it was a win for me for something around $100.+.

OP2 years ago@12345jamesstamps That's fantastic! I think it's worth experimenting...
I've done it before for a hard-to-sell item that I just wanted to get rid of, with great results.

·2 years agoItems like that I donate and take the tax write off instead of paying Ebay so much in fees I'm lucky to break even.

OP2 years agoGood option for people who itemize instead of taking the standard deduction.

·2 years agoHow long ago did that item sell? Sometimes it takes a while for ad fees to show up, but it's possible you just got an organic sale and it didn't go through the promotion. Edit: I think when things sell quickly like that, it's because people have alerts via saved searches, so they're not seeing promoted listings in their search, they're getting a message that a new item has been listed for their saved search and they go right to it.

Tried a few different promoted percentages (since it became a thing) and have found higher did not mean anything, but it sure doesn’t hurt to try something new.
Hope it works in your favor!! ðŸ˜

Thx -- Well, I've had the same results as you.
After 4 days, with two pretty similar items:
13% promoted item -- 2 views and 1 watch
Non-promoted item -- More views, more watches >> SALE

·2 years agoDoing listings over the last couple weeks I’ve noticed eBay has suggested outrageous rates. Had to actually laugh myself. There is no way I’d just say “okay eBay, let’s do an extra 18.1 %†on top of my fees of 13.5% for a pair of everyday jeans?!?
Yes I promote, as I’m in a very saturated category, but never will I go with insane suggestions. Do what works for you! eBay has already shown many of us, that a higher rate just lines eBay’s pockets, NOT the sellers.
Hope your experiment works, but I wouldn’t hold your breath!

·2 years agoThey funny thing is most sellers don't realize they are paying way above 13.5% profit to Ebay when you total up 13.5%(or 14.5%) of Price + Shipping + Tax. It can be 25...40...60%. Heavy item to ship will always bite you in the end.
rockyroadtradingpost
OP2 years agoI totally understand that -- it's nuts.
Just running an experiment to compare views with a similar item.

You're both right, and I understand all.
Just for fun -- I'm just interested in seeing how many more views it gets me, if any, compared to a similar non-promoted item.
It's an item I can afford to play around with.
I'll report back.

·2 years agoEbay makes suggestions / recommendations on all kinds of things, all the time. I simply ignore them and I go with what I know or think is best for me and my listings. Ebay will recommend starting prices too and in my experience they are rarely accurate.
vintagecraze50
·2 years agoYes it is ONLY a suggested rate, but it’s way way out of this world to list something unless the item was acquired for the right price. Yes, the starting prices ebay suggests are WAY off for what we sell most of the time.
