Ebay to raise fees again. When will sellers get relief?
I was angered to read this morning that eBay is raising fees yet again. Another year, another 0.35%. Does eBay not care that people use their platform to make a living? This increase, paired with another unreasonable raise in shipping rates is making in harder and harder every day to make a living selling on eBay. eBay is a multi-billion-dollar corporation, yet they need to screw small businesses that use their platform out of another 0.35%. eBay once again proves they simply don't care. Before you know it, you'll be paying more fees than you'll actually get from the sale. In just the past year, eBay has also upped to promotion fees to be calculated on the final value instead of the sale price and raised the minimum to 2%. Wasn't that enough? Sellers are struggling with raising postage rates (which eBay fails to negotiate better rates with carriers; why haven't we got cubic rate yet?) and rising costs from wholesalers and other sources for inventory. Expenses raising at all levels gives small businesses little opportunity for growth. If eBay corporate really cared about its sellers, it would not be raising final value fees, especially for people (like myself) who already pay for a store subscription. There is literally no justification for it, so I am simply requesting that, a simple explanation as to why eBay has raised just about every fee there is and has failed to implement policies that help its sellers succeed.

·2 years agoI just listed some parts on eBay and lucky I noticed the fee when I went to edit it. I canceled it.
I AM DONE selling on eBay... $70 on $495 plus what Paypals cut.... plus sky high shipping..... NOPE NOPE...
Going to Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, and spacific forums with classifieds that the item appeals to. ALL OF THESE ARE FREE.... I am out as a seller....
I'll buy still, may be. However once 90% eBay buyer,. I am now less than 50% buyer on eBay, or less. I now go more and more to Local (Walmart, Target), Amazon and China sites that stores sell direct as first choice.
EBAY has has priced their self out of usefulness. I just will not pay these fees and with shipping cost it is hard to justify it.

·2 years ago@fly4usa
There is no longer a paypal cut. The ebay fees were consolidated with the payment processor fee (Adyen) when they stopped using paypal. Try to charge your buyers the shipping cost.

·2 years agoThe fees mentioned in the first post were raised in 2023 so it isn't a new thing.
As far as "Paypals cut', Paypal does not take anything since your sales are processed through
ebay's Managed Payments, not Paypal.

·2 years agoThe truth is eBay is never going to stop until they squeeze sellers out of every cent they want and there's nothing you can do about it except stop selling on the platform. Promoted listings is a joke which by the way if you don't promote you won't even make a sale anymore. I also received notice today that once an item sells the .30 cents per transaction fee per item is going to .40 cents per transaction. I really think they just sit up in their office and think of ways to squeeze more money out of everybody (obviously)....plus These guys are ruthless and I'm literally paying 33% for each transaction and haven't made a sale in a month. They decided to charge me another 6% because I no longer meet the guidelines even though I have 100% feedback and perfect everything else but sales have gone to nothing so I don't qualify as a top-rated seller anymore even though I don't get any business and they have jumped on the opportunity to charge me more. I literally maybe have sold a few items so far for the year so I stopped listing and only have about 40 items up for free advertising being most people that buy the items I sell already know how to contact me so I'm phasing eBay out of my life. Let's face it eBay is on the decline and the only people left on their platform are the ones that are going to have to pay the big bucks because there's nobody else to do it except the desperate people selling on eBay at this point. Like another person stated it's a business and as all businesses they don't care about the people they care about the bottom line and their stockholders. I personally don't care about their bottom line or their stockholders so it works both ways... I will try not to let the door hit me in the ass on the way out

·3 years agoFinances just come down to greed. The rich get richer & the poor get poorer. I don't blame eBay for all of the fees but I certainly blame them for taking a % of the shipping (which they DO NOT provide a service for) & for the % they take from the rotten government taxes. I always thought I would be happy to pay a flat 15% FVF if it was ONLY on the sale price. Not on the total. This was before the gov'ts decided to tax sellers on the sale. As usual, the gov't makes everything worse. No matter which political party is in charge, they waste money & find ways to take, take, take from us. As a Canadian, I also pay an extra fee on the exchange rate. eBay raises the rate above what it is really is so they can grab on to that little bit of a bonus. We cannot escape the greed unless we go off of the grid! lol Good luck to us all. 🙂

·3 years agoebay is doing everything they can to survive... Why do you think they are pushing promoted so hard, it's because thats the only thing holding them afloat right now with the amount of people leaving the platform from all of the eronious errors and glitches daily.. it's becoming laughable at this point. Ebay used to be a great platform to sell on, not so much anymore. ·3 years agoMaybe they need to develop a strategy to keep good buyers on the platform, and attract new good buyers to the platform. All that really comes out from them are new ways to take more money from the sellers they have a hard time backing when problems arise.
They have to come up with something other than "we will take more money from sellers," but not do anything tangible to retain and grow the number of good buyers here.
The only strategy apart from this was courting so called high value, high dollar item sellers, as the thing that would save the site. However they don't back these sellers when buyer fraud occurs, so this strategy will not work, as those sellers have wised up and won't sell those items in quantities to save the site. Not while ebays policies enable and encourage buyer fraud. So this only other strategy will not work for them. Couple this with the well known problems with the various Authenticity services they use causing seller problems, discussed on the boards, and its not going to work for them.
Things aren't going to go well, and its ebays choices and strategies doing so. Everyone here always says most of the problems a business faces is mostly their fault. They tell individual sellers that all the time. Well Ebays problems they are facing are mostly their fault as well. They aren't exempt from the general rule people feel fine applying to other businesses so readily.

·3 years agoWhen it's all said and done they're probably making $1.00 if that. It's unforgiving how expensive selling is now. On small items the Post Office takes the biggest cut. The lowest price I can sell at and make money is $6.00. And when I say "make money" I mean like .20 cents.
I sold an item at a competitive price $6.21 beating the competitor by .01 and my take away from that was .52 cents. That's what ebay paid me out of that sale. Out of that my cost for the item was .13 cents. The mailer was .07 cents. The protective wrapper was .04 and a thank you card was .04 that's .28 cents out of .52 leaving me with a grand total of .24 cents profit to which the government takes another .04 cents for income tax and PA state takes .01 cent. So I'm left with .19 cents to feed my kids and pay bills. Mind you, the buyer paid $6.21 plus sales tax. Out of ALL that, I make .19 cents. And my competitor thinks $6.22 is a good price.
Sellers need to stop being so low on price. Anything under $10 is a crime. Minimum price should be $10. Instead we have to deal with people who can't do math trying to sell something as low as they can, and for what? The lowest guy doesn't have to set the bar that low.
Then we have the people who use postage stamps instead of FCM with tracking. They really cut into the good sellers because they don't care about metrics. They just want to have the LOWEST price. Selling things they can ship with a stamp for $2.99 with free shipping. Gimme a break. Shipping without tracking should be banned on ebay. Tracking should be mandatory now that the USPS includes it with all mail except stamps.

·3 years agoIn my opinion, I would call it a surety that ebay will continue to raise fees at the current rate and likely faster as time goes on until or unless they figure out a way to increase revenue by some method other than digging into their users back pocket...
Continuous rate take increase is unsustainable and creates a viscous cycle - The more a venue company digs in the short term, the more they lose in the long term with both buyer and seller dissatisfaction due to higher prices and exorbitant fees - and the more they lose, the more they dig... The only way off that merry-go-round is ingenuity and bold moves that create true equity, value and fairness in business - Not "We Heard You" so we're raising our fees - Any growth-based actions that are contrary to their default of rate take increase will likely hurt in the short term, but will also very likely payoff in the long term - So far it seems no one at the helm is able or willing to get off that merry-go-round...

·3 years agoOMG! The sky has finally fallen!
We now have to increase our prices by 3 1/2 cents for every $10 in selling price! A whole 3 1/2 cents! WOW, that's a really big deal-breaker!
In reading thru the first 47 posts here, I've been shaking my head at the prospect of Armageddon over a fee increase of only one third of one percent. You'd think it was being interpreted as 35%.
Keep things in perspective instead of "when in trouble, when in doubt, run in circles & scream and shout". The answer to this extremely minor fee increase is to ACCEPT > ADJUST > ADAPT. That's what the successful sellers do here. I haven't even touched on the mitigating downward fee changes also in the announcement.
If having to raise prices by 3 1/2 cents for every $10 in sales price is too much to handle, or your business model is not capable of absorbing a fee increase of only 1/3 of 1%, perhaps online selling is not for you. Get a grip and some perspective.
Cheers, Duffy

·3 years agoEBay is a publically traded corporation and as such their ONLY goal is to maximize their value to their shareholders. If they fail to do so they will cease to exist. There are a couple of general ways to maximize profit the first is to cut costs and the second is to increase revenues. Ideally both at the same time.
Most costs are going up everywhere and I have not issue with the increase business is business but I started diversifying off of eBay long ago and have found several sites that have fees as low as 3% and a number of local forums that have 0%. Sure they may not have the buyer base eBay has but that base means nothing if you cannot be market competitive and move/sell your items.
Imagine what the FVF's would be if eBay had not introduced PL. The revenue from PL has probably negated a FVF for awhile now but that well my be drying up also.

if you have a store the FVF is 125
I have a store for the large discount on FVF
my savings with a store are 16.6%
dropping the FVF fee 2.5 percentage points equals a 16.6% savings in fees

·3 years agoThey won't slow their role until sellers band together and shame them on social media through viral posts. Negative publicity is the only thing these big companies understand. They absolutely hate it and will do what's needed to avoid it. So probably nothing will ever happen because most sellers are too oblivious or self-centered to organize and do anything proactive to make their voices heard. Your point being?? The % is actually less for high dollar items at some point depending on the category. For most items.
So on a 10K item FVF's on the first $7,500 would be $993.75 and for the remaining $2,500 it would be $58.75. Total FVF's $1,052.50 or as a percentage of the $10K it would be 10.52% of the total sale.

I would be curious to know, although eBay is never going to disclose this, how much the move to MP actually increased their revenue. By eBay's own admission the move to MP had one purpose and that was to increase revenues. So they got the 2.9% PayPal fees and in exchange have inherited the sales tax collection and remission, the 1099 issuance, the chargeback issues, and whatever else comes down the track.

·3 years agoThe grocery store raised the price of eggs again. If they really cared about the little guy, they wouldn't do that. The gas station raised the price per gallon again. If they really cared about their customers, they wouldn't do that. And don't get me started on my utility company. Man, my heating bill is huge. Why don't they care about me and give me a break?

·3 years agoAnd Exxon just reported record profits and certain crowds blame the government for the actions of Big Oil even though blaming the government for high gas prices last summer is blaming the tail instead of the dog.

·3 years agoLOL - so you are ignorant when it comes to economics and government policies? Okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!
m60driver
·3 years agoI don't think I am particularly ignorant of economics having read back in high school what is still perhaps, in my less than humble opinion, the best introduction to economics, Richard Heilbroner's The Worldly Philosophers. I can discuss the differences between say the Chicago or "freshwater" economics ( think Friedman) relative to "saltwater" economics (think Keynes) although I prefer the works of the "renegade" economists. So I daresay I do not feel that "ignorant when it comes to economics ".
And what the heck is "Okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!"? Something get stuck in your throat?

·3 years agoEbay to raise fees again. When will sellers get relief?
Never.
Before you know it, you'll be paying more fees than you'll actually get from the sale
Never.
I am simply requesting that, a simple explanation as to why eBay has raised just about every fee
Because eBay is a for-profit company.

·3 years agoit was just discovered that Amazon takes more than 50% from sellers. I'm sure ebay sees this as well and thinks its an invitation to squeeze sellers further. So while they are a for profit company, they aren't looking at the long-term health and growth of the platform, just short term gain.

·3 years agoI'll take the earlier fee increases if you take the UK eBay shop prices.

·3 years agoThe thing that irritates me the most is that they take effect in 2 weeks. They should at least be required to give 30 days notice. UK seller fees increases don't take effect until April so why are US sellers treated differently???

·3 years agoThe post office is offering Ebay Parcel Select. They also have UPS. All of the shipping fees available to me on Ebay are the same as Amazon and they are considerably lower than Etsy.
This is YOUR business not Ebay's. My landlord raised my rent with my new lease. He cares about his bottom line, not mine. Adjust your prices, find lower cost merchandise, etc.
Etsy has higher rates and Amazon should follow shortly as the new CEO is determined that the online business makes money.
Simple explanation...Google raised their rates, salaries are rising, operational costs are up. Doing business is more expensive.

·3 years agoWhat you don't seem to realize, is that large corporations get a massive break on shipping costs. On top of that, if we have to absorb these added shipping costs, along with added fees from Ebay, it makes is not very competitive price wise, as most people will then just by locally. As an added note, when another poster commented that "meh" fees go up and essentially I just adjust by raising my prices, how long does he think he can keep doing that. Local retailers and big corporations will eat his lunch. Theoretically, Ebay should not have to raise the percentage, because as the cost of goods rises, their take increases. I think many online sellers will quite in coming years, as due to these added costs, we can no longer compete with big corporations and local retailers (who don't have shipping costs and other fees).

·3 years agoMeh. Promoted Listings are optional. Fees stayed the same for a long time. They likely won't decrease, ever. Shipping is always going to rise steadily. We know that.
I increase pricing when and if I need to.
Moving on with online selling in 2023.

·3 years agoeBay can do what they want - it is their platform. BUT, the argument that rates need to continue to increase is incorrect. eBay takes a percentage of sales - meaning that growth in items sold + inflation can cover their increasing costs without raising rates. Reminds me of when the City of Columbus pitched higher taxes for the police force. The story was that they hadn't seen an increase in rates in several years. BUT, what they failed to mention was that Columbus is a relatively good economic engine - a lot of business growth and people moving into the city. Their budget was up every year b/c of increased tax receipts - the "haven't raised rates in a decade" was **bleep** from the beginning.

·3 years agoTrue. Even the amount of sales are also dropped but they don't care. They just need the same profit or more profits. So they do so. -_-
