eBay Shipping Envelopes / Labels
Summary: pikeup45 expressed frustration with eBay’s "Shipping Envelopes" which they describe as mislabeled shipping labels lacking tracking and leading to delayed deliveries. They faced issues with non-delivery and a problematic refund process requiring a PayPal account. Other participants, including thriftyfiftyfifty and christworks, provided insights suggesting a misunderstanding of the service's conditions, as these are standard labels intended for specific weight and size restrictions, not actual envelopes. christworks, among others, emphasized correct usage and limitations associated with tracking, while ruby_c_took found the refund procedure unusual. Several participants with positive experiences, such as 1786davycrockett, offered advice on proper usage to avoid issues.
Don't ever, ever, ever, ever purchase an eBay Shipping Envelope / which are not actually envelopes, but rather Shipping Labels. You will be totally screwed if you do! We have purchased about (10) of them during the past 90 days, and here is our experience; first of all, eBay has the United Postal System service these labels on your packages. And the Post Office hates these labels! We have had multiple sub-station managers tell us directly. They tell us these eBay labeled packages are set off to the side, and the Postal Workers get to them when they get around to it. The Post Office does not scan in the label to their system, so your package is not tracked / and there is no acknowledgement that the package has been delivered / and, there is no way to find out where in the heck the package is in the system, none what so ever! We have (2) packages out right now that were shipped 60 days ago, and the Buyers still do not have their items. 60 days!!! These items should have been delivered within 7 days, because that is the Post Office's delivery time on the same package.
And then we went to eBay to get a refund on this mess. And they are telling us that we have to set up a PayPal account to receive our money. WHAT!!! These labels were never paid by PayPal. They were paid from our eBay account, and that is where the money should be refunded. There have been many times that eBay refunded us, concerning problems dealing with our listings. And that money went back into our eBay account. And there has been many times that the United States Postal System has refunded us money back into our eBay account because of over payment on shipping cost. But on eBay's messed us Shipping Labels, we have to set up a PayPal account to receive our money? That is not even sound accounting principles. You don't fund money back into an account that had nothing to do with a transaction. My bank doesn't do it / my brokerage account doesn't do it / heck, even the IRS doesn't do it.
eBay created this disastrous shipping label. And now to get a refund, they are creating more even more problems, by demanding that we set up an account with an entity that has nothing to do with this transaction. WOW!!!!
So stay away from eBay's ENVELOPES and/or SHIPPING LABELS / or you will be screwed big time!!! Because eBay has no idea what the hell they are doing on this.

·2 weeks agoeBay Standard Envelopes are not packages, they are letter mail, and are processed as such. The package stream and the letter mail stream are not the same, packages and letters are completely separate (and they are legally treated separately as well). Package tracking and letter mail tracking are on different systems and are not intercompatible, which is why they can't be scanned by a clerk or mailman.
Like all letter mail, ESEs are only scanned when they are fed through letter sorting machines. Your ESEs are being kicked out of the system and not scanned because they are not flexible enough, and/or not the right size and/or you are using padded envelopes. You must use regular letter-legal size envelopes, and they must flex around a coffee can or cereal bowl, if they don't flex they don't get scanned, they get kicked out of the system and go into a manual sort bin, and can disappear for a week or more.
The post office does not "hate" ESEs anymore than they hate any other form of letter mail. ESEs are metered mail. There is nothing to "hate", their job is sorting/delivering letters, they are letters. Pitney Bowes provides the postage, just like they provided postage meters to businesses for many, many decades. If the substation managers "hate" processing metered letters, they are definitely in the wrong line of work.
In complete fairness eBay doesn't fully explain what I just said on the ESE page and I wish they'd rewrite the information and instructions based on feedback from us. It would at least help reduce angry posts about ESE a little and help reduce support calls for eBay.

OP2 weeks agoLike I have said on multiple replies to individuals commenting on this thread, we received an okay from eBay directly that we could use these envelopes; envelopes that are 6" x 5" x 1/2" in dimension, and shipping items that weigh less than 2 ounces. And these padded envelopes that we are using are extremely flexible! We can easily fold it in half with no problems. They are just slightly thicker than a regular first class mailing envelope.
And the Post Office does hate these eBay Shipping Labels, because the Post Office is getting blamed for all of the headaches and problems associated with the defects of those labels. Ebay screwed up on this disastrous idea, and are trying to make the Post Office look bald because of it.
I have had (2) eBay reps tell me, that eBay has gotten 1,000's of complaints about these Envelopes / Labels. And they also said that eBay is stepping back, to evaluate this Envelope / label they put into the market place, to try and make it more in line with the other shippers out there.
We used these eBay Labels to ship (20) coins to our Buyers. 19 coins were delivered. But it took 5 to 8 weeks for those coins to arrive at their destinations. It takes the Post office 4 to 5 days to do that. And that one coin that never got delivered; please tell us how we can track this envelope down without tracking numbers! Neither eBay / or the Post Office have any idea where that package is. Nada! And eBay doesn’t have any desire to help us out. They just throw up their hands and say we hope it gets delivered at some date. WHAT!!
And please note that each time we mailed these coins using an eBay Shipping Label, we went to a Post Office. and presented them to a front counter person, who scanned the envelopes in and gave us a receipt for each envelope. And we asked the front counter person, after getting a receipt, “will these envelopes be delivered through your system?” And they answered “YES” each time. But they did it while rolling their eyes!
Maybe there are some eBayers who have had good luck using these eBay Shipping Labels. But myself, and thousands of other eBayer’s HAVE NOT HAD GOOD LUCK!
So I would say to every eBayer out there who is thinking about using these eBay Shipping Labels; run as fast as you can away from these disastrous Shipping Labels / run 180 degrees in the opposite direction. And then wait until eBay gets their act together and starts demanding that the Post Office put tracking numbers on these labels, as well as giving the eBay community a realistic delivery date for the items they are shipping.

·3 weeks agoI'm going to ignore the rant about ESE which I have no experience with and can't comment on.
However, I do think it is strange that they want your PayPal account for the refund. That they would specify PayPal over a bank account is odd since eBay and PayPal severed their relationship years ago and since payouts and refunds go to bank accounts now. Perhaps try another customer service rep about the account for the refund? Something about that just doesn't seem right.

·3 weeks agoI've used this method over 8,000 times and can count problems on one hand.
To do this use a 9 x 5 business envelope. When putting a card in, you must secure it to one side so that envelope so will bend in the middle all the way. Single cards in a top loader work fine at the .78 rate. Thicker top loaders or more than 3 cards need to be sent at the 3 oz. rate of 1.36 because it will appear rigid. NEVER use a padded envelope or cardboard envelope when sending this way. If you do it will be a concern. Also don't go beyond the size stated above. I've even sent 10 card insert sets using the 3 oz. rate and they go fine also. As for the tracking yes its not as good but if you run into a snag just explain it like this : the new version of a 1st class stamp. Its only tracked at the sorting center on my end and your post office on your end. Just like the old fashion postage stamps, its not tracked at the door. It shows delivered when it arrives at the customers post office. It actually gets to the home within 2 days of that if not the same day. It depends on how good the customers carrier is. If your so dead set against it, so be it. You will only be hurting yourself because others will be selling the same thing cheaper than you. And if using this method to the T - with no issues. As far as complaining postal workers, if it wasn't for eBay a lot of them never would have been hired for lack of volume, they have today. They need to appreciate the hand that feeds them. Every company has employees that complain. They are called losers in the lounge. Best way to keep yourself from turning negative is to walk away from someone like that. If you listen to them, you will become one of them just like you are right now. To be in business for ourselves, we have to stay positive and look for solutions, not negatives. That is what eBay did for all of us when they came out with the program. Go with the flow.

·3 weeks ago · EditedI am not a fan of Ebay Standard Envelope Service.
I tried it and had too many problems.
This issue was my packaging, it is too rigid for the USPS sorting equipment. I refuse to reduce my packaging's rigidity because I do not want to risk the merchandise, even if it is insured.
If I lose some buyers because of my shipping cost, I can live with that.
I read all of the descriptions of the service, I am mystified that coins are viewed as an acceptable category, but it some sellers appear how to pack them so they have success.
Other like myself, have their orders jam the sorters.
I find no relevance to the fact that it is considered metered mail. I do not drop it at the PO, it goes into a USPS pickup box and the metered mail is not separated from the stamped mail.
Some times parcel rate mail goes through the letter scanners if it looks like it is letter sized, so I avoid any packaging which looks like a letter.

·2 weeks agoSo you are charging your customers an extra $4 to "insure" safe delivery of an $8 item, that was designed to be sent totally loose in the mail and that would be insured against damage under the standard envelope shipping anyway, an item that you probably had a buy cost of around 10 cents in?
Seems like a large amount of money just lit on fire to me. Sure you have 100 year old postcards, but the world has way more of them than the world seems to want, otherwise the postcard categories wouldn't be flooded.
tobaccocardyahoo
·2 weeks agoI am preserving an item likely to be 75 - 175 years old, and insuring that it does not enter into the hands of someone who fails to value it and its history.,
I make a judgement as to value, and most postcards are valueless, and the flooded categories make that abundantly clear.
The limited postcards I offer are usually bought by collectors whose primary interest relates to the subject - cross collectibles, and when they sell, the sell for more than most of the postcards listed on Ebay.
I need not offer anything which I do not think has merit, and need not sell anything to be used in collages or other crafts projects. And I am willing to wait for a buyer who cares because a buyer who cares will have a hard time finding another of many of the items I list.
Flipping is not a part of my business strategy.

·3 weeks agoI have shipped over 20,000 of these, overall less problems than with normal packages.
It is just metered mail, it gets put in the regular mailbox. If someone is having major problems with these then it is they that do not know what they are doing, not ebay, this is essentially the same postage you have been able to purchase online from Pitney Bowes for about 25 years now.

I see less and less of that every year. I am sick and tired of all these keyboard warriors and there better than thou attitudes. A way for all you warriors out their to gauge what you are typing is, if you wouldn't say it to the persons face, dont put it online either. All the negativity I see is unreal.....Anyways, thank you for letting me rant about that, Im sure I'll get some nice replies about it.
To address your issue now, I agree with you about how confusing it is by eBay calling it an envelope not a label. I have never used the service, so until this posting, I thought it was an envelope you received for mailing an item too. I never looked into it before, so I feel that was a fair assumption.
Next, you are correct again with the tracking issue. I did go up to the help section and did a search for "ebay standard envelope" and it does state in the description several times about the service having "integrated tracking". There is one section that talked about you not getting a "scan as accepted" for the package. But it didnt really detail the differences in the scanning details for this service and advantage ground.
Finally, further down the article, it does give a description of the envelope sizes allowed. So, after reading that, you can conclude you supply the envelope. But, why even create a situation where the name of the service can be so easily misinterpreted in the first place? Which I believe was your point on that situation.
With your 2 undelivered packages, it does say you can open a case after 30 days of mailing the package. But your window for opening a case closes at 90 days.
I hope this helps a little bite.

Most (if not all) of the coin items which you've shipped out during the past few months have been listed with underpaid USPS Ground Advantage as the shipping option -- are these the items which you have attempted to ship out with the eBay Standard Envelope (ESE) labels?
If so, you are offering your buyers a more expensive shipping service, while erroneously believing that you can ship these items at the cheaper ESE rates -- thus cheating your buyers out of the higher grade mailing service.
As others have previously mentioned, the ESE is only a shipping label, which needs to be taped to a plain #6 or #10 envelope. It is legitimately contracted business metered mail; but needs to be mailed properly in either the "Metered Envelopes" slot in your post office lobby, or in any USPS "blue box."
Do NOT hand the ESEs to any USPS counter personnel, as many of them seem to believe that the ESEs are "counterfeit" or "phony" or "illegitimate," and these counter employees may not handle the ESEs properly, or may deliberately dump them into the "dead letter" section.
Many eBay sellers (myself included) have mailed thousands of ESEs properly through the mail for years, with no problems and no complaints from buyers; but it is VERY important to read and understand how the ESEs work, and how they are to be handled and packaged, especially when attempting to receive a refund (which has NOTHING to do with PayPal, by the way -- you were given bogus information from somebody!).
pikeup45
OP3 weeks agoYou are correct about one thing; eBay calls these things "Shipping Envelopes" but they are nothing but a Shipping Label with no tracking attached!
I contacted eBay by phone before using these labels, and even sent this representative a photo of the padded envelope I was going to use. And he told me point blank that this envelope was A-Okay to use, and was in compliance with eBay's rules and regulations concerning this label.
The only problem we have with these labels is this; it takes months for the items to finally arrive at the Buyer's address. And, there is no tracking, and no notifications that the item was delivered. USPS does not scan these labels for tracking! No matter what envelope you use.

·3 weeks agoPadded mailers DO NOT qualify for ESE/letter mail. They are being kicked from the letter steam and sent non machinable. This is why they take so long and aren't tracked. You're lucky they haven't been arriving or returned with postage due tbh.
An ESE that is properly packaged to meet USPS letter mail regulations in a REGULAR PAPER ENVELOPE will go from ME to CA in 4-5 days with tracking on both ends. Every time.
I would suggest reading eBay's ESE help and guidelines pages on what's acceptable for the service rather than asking some guy in India who's paid to close calls not learn the intricacies of the USPS's regulations..

·3 weeks ago@pikeup45 Sorry you are having issues, but I will continue to use eBay Standard Envelope where it makes sense. I've never had an issue.
From reading your post it sounds like you've been using the label and sticking it on the item you are sending, rather than actually putting it into an envelope. I do hope you will come back here and let us know if that is what you are doing.
The envelopes are not packages. They are the equiliavent of a letter. When done correctly following eBay's policy, nobody at USPS has to do anything with them. You dump them in the mailbox, and eventually someone dumps the stack into another bin and on to the sorting facility where they are machine processed.
Tracking is indeed limited. It won't get the first scan until it goes through a machine, which may be a day or two after I drop it in the mailbox. The delivery scan happens before the buyer actually receives it. I've found this to often be the same day, but sometimes it is a day or two later. For a while I sent buyers a message letting them know about this, but now I don't even worry with that and nobody ever messages about it.
eBay is not the sole creator of the label. eBay cannot just say, "Hey, USPS, take this label!" The USPS and eBay worked together to come up with a shipping solution for certain inexpensive items that could fit in an envelope that was machinable.
pikeup45
OP3 weeks agoI am using an envelope. I even explained the dimensions of that envelope in my original post. And I also have verbal confirmation from an eBay representative, that these envelopes we are using to send these coins in, does fall into the terms and conditions that eBay established for these Shipping Labels.
christworks
·3 weeks ago@pikeup45 No where do you state in your original post the dimensoins of your envelope. You've also edited that post since I made mine.
If the post office won't machine them it means they are too thick and they do not meet eBay's qualifications. Even if the envelope itself is within the guidelines, it can be too thick or not pliable, which makes it non-machinable and that will cause problems.

·3 weeks ago · EditedI use various Ebay branded shipping supplies all the time. The ones I use I have no issues with at all. Maybe it is just the type of product you chose to use that didn't work well for you. Maybe try something else that may work better for you.
I'm not at all sure you got valid info from whomever you spoke with.
Shipping charges are developed from the information the Seller supplies during the process. If the seller makes a mistake, high or low, that in turn creates the need for refunds or additional charges. Ebay does NOT set your package size, method of shipment or weight, the seller does all that.
Now if you are complaining specifically about the Standard Envelope program Ebay has, I have heard many issues on the threads with that process. Sorry.
pikeup45
OP3 weeks agoThis is not a branded shipping supply you purchase through the app store or anywhere else. When you are in eBay "MANAGE ORDERS AWATING SHIPMENT" page, and you touch the "GET SHIPPING LABEL" tab, it takes you to all of the standard shipping companies / USPS, UPS and FedEx . . . . along with a selection from eBay called "eBay Shipping Envelopes;" which is not an envelope at all, but rather a Shipping Label established by eBay that you can purchase to ship your item with.
So you have (4) shipping entities that you can choose to ship your items with when you go to purchase a Shipping Label; USPS, UPS, FedEx, and eBay / as long as your envelope fits a certain size and weight. Which ours did.

·3 weeks ago · EditedYou’re not telling us anything new…eBay Standard Envelope isn’t new either and many Sellers have been using the service for years. Honestly you should have read how the Program works before you even tried it. It is not traditional tracking, does not get an acceptance scan, and is scanned primarily at Distribution Hubs. You should stop using it because you don’t like it…many do. P.S. Can’t believe you thought it was a super special envelope rather than using a “standard envelope” like the program Title says.
pikeup45
OP3 weeks agoWe never thought this was something super special. We always thought of it as a wonderful way of sending items at a great price, that were small and didn't weigh a lot. And we knew it wasn't an envelope. You find that out when you print the very first "eBay Shipping Envelope" on your printer. You get a shipping label off your printer, not an envelope!
And "YES" we did read up on this funky Envelope / Shipping label before ever using it. We even contacted eBay about this Shipping Label / sending our eBay representative a photo and sizing information of the padded envelope we were going to use. And he told us point blank that this envelope we wanted to use conformed to eBay's rules and regulations.
But what the information about this Shipping label didn't mention, was the fact that USPS does not issue tracking information. Nor did it mention it would takes weeks and weeks and weeks for our items to arrive at the Buyer's address. Nor did it say we had to establish a PayPal account to get any kind of a refund if something goes wrong.
This eBay Shipping Label is a mess!! If you have any kind of a problem with this label, you contact eBay. And when you do, eBay says to contact USPS. And when you contact USPS about the problem, they say to contact eBay. And this back and forth has happened to us on many occasions, along with thousands of other eBayers. And that is why they have pulled this service from many areas of the country, until they can get a handle on all of the issues and refunds they are giving out.
But we are never using this messed up Shipping Label again! We are tired of the Post Office hating us / our Buyers hating us / and eBay getting upset at us because we are calling them out on this ridiculous Shipping Label. We would rather pay the extra money, have a tracking number, and know our Buyers will get their item in a few days, rather than a few months!
