eBay sellers: the unsung economic indicators. You predicted the economic downturn long before Wall S
eBay sellers, the canary in the coal mine of economics. Your sales data and insights foreshadowed the economic slump, outpacing the predictions of Wall Street's top analysts.
eBay sellers should be an economic indicator.

·2 years agoThe stock market corrected and people in the Japanese carry trade got their tail feathers nipped (also only a matter of time). But like it's always 5 o'clock somewhere, the sky is always falling somewhere.

·2 years agoI know. I was being facetious.
A 1,000 point drop on the Dow is a big nothing burger.
Some sellers it seems get their exercise by jumping to conclusions.
Canary in the coal mine, indeed. That's a hoot actually.

·2 years agoHave come to the conclusion that the best of the best Economic Forecasters on Wall Street will project enough of the future ups and downs of economic events that at least one of them will be almost right (like close in the game of horse shoes but no points or cigar). Hint: Ya' cain't spend money like a drunken sailor and expect good things to happen. Gotta' save $$ for rainy day events that you didn't know were coming. This applies big time to to all government from DC to Dog Patch USA. And sales activity has never been on a continual northeast curve but more like the movement of a Duncan YoYo lots of ups & downs and sleeping and walking the dog frequently.
The best indicators of things to come are - used these over teh years to project sales activity of forklift trucks (capital goods)
1. Capital equipment sales & rentals and advertising expenditure - one of the first things taken out of the operating expenditures.
2. Home building supply sales - slow down - Home Depot, Lowes etc Look at the inventory level of bricks in a local brick yard supplier
3. New home construction slows down - speculation building slows or stops
4. Overtime time is cut in the trades and warehousing/manufacturing activities
5. Price roll backs start to happen more frequently at the retail level - right now CVS & Walgreens will be closing locations and are promoting nice discounts to entice buying to stay alive.
6. New automobile purchases sales slow but used stays strong but supply becomes limited for good used (e.g. off lease supply). EV care sales have slowed down e.g. Rivian halted construction of a new $3 billion assembly plant in Georgia - ground was excavated and it was delayed until future demand due to uncertainty of the demand or other reason unkown. This was an expansion. Home facility is in Indiana.

If you know anyone in this position, suggest they consider moving to Victoria BC.
We are so short of trades that building sites have signs offering $40 an hour for apprentices.

·2 years agoEven a broken clock is right twice a day!!!
The stock market has been down for 2 days. That doesn't mean that we are in an economic downturn, it means the stock market has been down for a couple of days. Why would you want to try and read more into that than is necessary.
Does that mean the sky is falling????
Ebay sellers regularly come to the threads to discuss their downturn in sales. This isn't a new thing, it has been happening regularly for decades.

·2 years agoWhat is, the clock? The stock market? If your talking about the stock market, 2 days down doesn't mean we are headed to a recession. The sky is not falling yet. Maybe it will, but the indicators are NOT there yet. Just many people are simply nervous about all the things going on in the US.
However it seems some want us to be in a recession? Not sure why and I'm not saying you are, but some sure do and it simply doesn't make sense to think this way. Some may be too young to remember what it is like to weather a real recession. I happen to vividly remember. It isn't good for the vast majority of us in any way.

·2 years agoYou must not understand the statement. The stock markets frequently go into correcting modes and that does not mean the sky is falling at all. I just listened to an analysis yesterday and that what they said and that was not catastrophic.

·2 years agoI normally agree with your posts...but in my opinion, considering the sites poor management and reliance on organic sales, I would say that likely has a lot more to do with slow/no sales then any economic factors - Especially when you factor in that with the high prices and inflation buyers are contending with, a lot of people are looking to spend less on essential use and wear items - you would think that would be a positive thing for a site with a large population of resellers -

·2 years agoJust chiming in, but I think there's so much incredible choice now. And we have TEMU and Shein, and now Amazon trying to imitate them - I think eBay is just having its market eroding. All the glitches do not help, though.

·2 years agoTOO many choices, too few buyer, lots of stuff.

·2 years agoTheir lack of insight in getting more of the market share with whatever strategy they must use is a factor. They are relying on sellers to flip the bill for advertising and off site traffic. Funny though with that. Offsite traffic is controlled by the search engines they only let so many sites take the top and they must rotate them and they must do this a fairly as possible. You cannot always dominate the search on the offsite adds.

·2 years agoHowever, i have frequently seen a seller who has their own website who deals in our product and their items are all over the first pages of google, ALL THE TIME. Their prices are astronomical, and they must PAY google a million dollars a year for that. LOL!

·2 years agoSan Francisco is so very very packed with tourists from every state and country...
I see families with 5 or 6 kids...speaking in foreign languages...walking up and down the street to and from the cable cars and hotels as I walk to the gym.
I drive a motorcycle and every other car is an out of state license plate...and I drive also almost every day to the post office. Everyone is on vacation.
Why San Francisco?...it was 53 degrees at 10AM today and made it to 68 degrees today.
Usually the rich play the stock market...and usually the rich complain when it tumbles.
Just a normal summer....

·2 years agoThe many amazing benefits of being an informed and knowledgeable citizen. It simply requires unbiased analysis, which is often too difficult for some.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, in his farewell address to the nation, talked about the importance of an alert and knowledgeable citizenry.
