ebay says unpaid items are now automatically canceled? is this right?
most of my items are BIN w/immediate payment due. i have few auctions & buyers pay but...i currently have an unpaid auction item. i called ebay because i heard if an item is not paid within 5 days it is automatically cancelled & the buyer receives a penalty.
YES I DID TWICE MESSAGE THE BUYER. NO SURPRISE. NO RESPONSE
I asked if i had to (manually) cancel due to non payment. the rep said no. the item will automatically cancel.
if this is correct how long has this been going on? I can't imagine ebay DINGING a buyer.

The automated non-payment cancellation system has been around for probably 15 years, maybe even longer. Although non-payments are extremely rare for me I did turn on this feature but set it to kick in on day 30.
This was to prevent me from missing the last date to file a non-payment. Even with this feature turned on you can still do it manually anytime between 4 days and 30 days after the transaction date.
Go to this page to set up automatic cancellation:

Turn it on and the time frame options will appear so you can choose the time at which it will kick in (4 - 30 days).

The buyer has a minimum of four days (i.e. 96 hours from the time of purchase) within which to pay. You can specify whether the Unpaid item will be closed at the earliest opportunity, or will close at some point up to 30 days after the sale. (Your choice)
The buyer will get an Unpaid slap on their record. Two or more Unpaids within 12 months, and they can then be blocked by sellers who have their tightest buyer requirements imposed. (You can block buyers with as few as two Unpaids over the past 12 months.)

·6 months agoUnless it's changed, you have to turn that option on and you can choose how soon (4 days or longer) for it to auto cancel the order.

·6 months agoI'm pretty sure they are only cancelled automatically for you by ebay if you opt in to that process under your site preferences. Otherwise, just do it manually after 4 days.
