eBay sales tax reports when due.
I have to file sales taxes collected in the State of California even though eBay collects them. Where and when can I find amount collected.

·8 months agoI know nothing about taxes.
In addition to my federal taxes, my accountant who does my taxes asks me twice a year (1st half and 2nd half) for sales stats just for my state.
I do a report for all sales, January 1st to June 30th and July 1st to December 31st.
Then I filter only sales from Hawaii and give him those figures.

·8 months agoOn your quarterly report, California sellers who have a resale permit must file it under taxes collected by others. You enter the dollar amount under market place facilitator on the drop down, and on the detail line, I usually say on line sales or ebay-on line sales.
As far as seeing the total tax amount on eBay, go to your hub under "performance", click on sales to see the total sales tax collected/paid by eBay on your behalf

·8 months ago@bashort Many states require you to file, even if it's a 0 report. Mine does. In fact, it was due a week ago. Luckily, the late fee is a percentage of what you owe, so a percentage of 0 is 0. That said, my form does NOT require me to tell them how much eBay collected, so I have no idea where to find that info. I lalso wonder why they would need it, I would think they would have that info.

·8 months agoYou're lucky...here in Texas if you are late it is $50 fee even if reporting $0

·8 months ago@r_lresale I am lucky & every year, I keep reminding myself to do it earlier, in case they institute such a change here! I'll be earlier this year then the last 2 😉 I'm certainly cognizant that they could make such a change 🤞

·8 months ago@simply-the-best-for-you Well lets just say those late fees do work. After having to pay money for nothing essentially I have been early and/or on time with my reporting lol

·8 months agoCalifornia requires that you report "sales tax" after July 1st. Sales Tax year is July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026. You show EBAY as "marketplace facilitator" who collected "sales tax" on your behalf.
When you file report with State of California, you do NOT report "5% sales tax" amount EBAY collected. What you report is total "SALE AMOUNT" $299.95. You need to figure out Total Sales (all USA locations) and Total Sales (California only).
$20,000 USA
-5,000 California
$15,000 Outside California
I keep a spreadsheet to track all my California sales, so information is available when filing Sales Tax report.
(right click) on weblink below to register to "create account" to report STATE SALES TAX
Online Services — File a Return
City of San Jose requires you to get a "business tax certificate" (business license) to sell on EBAY

·8 months ago@caldreamer Must depend on when you got your license because mine was always Jan 31 (having it from 2011 to 2020)

·8 months agoI'll assume you have an SREA# and have to file.
You can get a full transaction report on the 'payments' tab, then far left- 'reports'; change dates to 'last year' or '2025' and you see the 'total' the 'states' (you'll need to add up the Cali sales and deduct from total gross sales to find the amount that you will place on the 'interstate/foreign commerce' line.
Once you figure out the Cali portion of sales, tax due etc. then there's a line that says 'other deductions' and that is where you put '3rd Party ebay already collected' (and possibly the amount).

·8 months agoSince it is a tax, is paid by your buyer and is forwarded by eBay to the state treasury, surely the State of California does not collect income tax on it, right? (Can you tell my knowledge about income tax is minimal?)

·8 months agoThe OP's question has nothing to do with Income Tax. The OP is a registered merchant in California for the collection of Sales Tax for sales within California. This requires annual or quarterly reporting of gross sales and sales tax collected.
With eBay there is no Sales Tax collected by the seller but they still have to report their sales and tax collected (in this case zero if they exclusively sell on eBay or other marketplaces that collect sales tax on behalf of sellers).

·8 months agoI do not know about California but the Illinois department of revenue specifically states NOT to report sales tax collected by a marketplace facilitator (like ebay)

·8 months agoI just filed mine tonight. No you don’t have to pay taxes on it again, but you do have to report how much was sold and then there’s a another section where I think it was a deduction, and there’s a little drop-down menu that says website facilitator or something like that and you put the total back in there because eBay collected it.
It’s redundant, but that’s California.
stainlessenginecovers
·8 months agoBut it's ONLY redundant to those with an SREA license and ONLY sell on Ebay and/or Amazon. If you sell at your website, yard/garage sales, swap meets etc. then you would have a combination of 'taxes paid by Facilitator' and 'taxes collected by me'.
