Ebay removed my sterling silver elephant earrings. Said aninals were not allowed in viollation
I had designer Susan Cummings' earrings bought at Neiman Marcus
Sterling silver earring with a head of elephants made of 925 sterling with a small amber bead above the head. eBay removes them in red as a violation of listing practices. I filed an appeal describing that they are real silver earrings...not made of any animal or animal parts. This is my email reply from eBay:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We reviewed your appeal of an action on your account. Upon further review, we’re unable to grant your appeal because the listings aren’t following our Animal products policy. Products made from elephants can?t be sold on eBay. For more details, see Animal Products policy.
What this means for you:
We need you to take action to avoid listing items like this again.
- Listings that didn’t follow this policy will remain removed or hidden until they can be edited to address the policy issue.
- Any restrictions or suspensions that may have been placed on your account will remain in place. Listings will automatically be restored and show up in search results after the end of any temporary restriction.
- Please ensure that you understand our policy so that you follow it in future listings. Listings that don't follow this policy in the future may result in additional actions, which could include: restriction, suspension, hiding listings from search, ending listings, loss of seller rating, and forfeiture of fees.
Here's a list of the items that didn't follow policy:
Item: 227347896896 Susan Cummings Elephant Head Earrings Dangle Sterling Silver Amber 2" Long 1990s
Reference ID: 2-105438007151
·4 months agoI tried to sell an old plastic model kit of a moon rocket and it was taken off because eBay said rockets can't be sold. They probably hire people with I.Q.s much lower than a 5 year old. .
·4 months agoAnd yet, eBay's own AI policy has gone by the wayside. Take particular note of Sec 3, point 2. Make sure to include a copy of this when submitting appeals.
·4 months agoAI " strikes " again. Sounds like it thinks there is ivory in them.
I suppose an elephant carved out of a block of Ivory soap would also be removed.
In place of elephant you could use a Pokemon like Cufant or Phanpy .
·4 months agoSo why is it if I ask google AI "do sterling silver elephant earrings contain any elephant it answers
"No. Sterling silver elephant earrings are exclusively made from 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (like copper). They do not contain any actual elephant parts, hair, or byproducts."
If I was involved with ebay AI development and implementation I would be to embarrassed to admit it.
·4 months agoJust shows how stupid Ai really is. Too bad EBAY sellers have to suffer because of Ai stupid mistakes.
·4 months agoI think the only risk to relisting immediately is if this happened because someone reported you (although I can't think why). But if that is the case, they may be on the lookout and ready to report again...
This is my theory when someone makes a post about how their auction was flagged while dozens of other sellers are selling the same thing.
·4 months agoAnother ‘site’ has banned small Amber pieces/beaded items.
Apparently, some parents would let their babies teethe on small Amber beaded necklaces or bracelets. Sadly, this was never good practice, as it was a serious choking hazard, and lawsuits commenced.
Perhaps the bots are similarly programmed.
·4 months agoYou can't sell dog collars on eBay because they are collars made out of dog.
·4 months agoSounds like the AI is mistaking the Jewelry for being made of ivory because it has the word "Elephant" in it. I'd avoid relisting those earrings for a while; you didn't do anything wrong since they aren't actually made of ivory, but it's better to avoid the wrath of the algorithm, especially now that it already thinks you're violating policy.
the ebay message indicates you can relist by editing the policy issue
w/o seeing your listing, only the title, i would eliminate the word 'head' and 'amber'
·4 months agoJust my $.02, but a more likely trigger is probably "elephant." I've listed all kinds of items (bicycle parts, mainly) with "amber" (lenses) or "head" (lights) for years with zero issues.
·4 months ago@a_c_green 2c understood
and i listed elephant earrings and other jewelry that sold over the years with the word 'elephant' LOL
must have been something under item specifics and or description box or just an 'intelligent' AI bot
·4 months agoThinking about this some more, some listing words are probably more, um, "sensitive" in some categories rather than others. Jewelry could be made out of ivory, so "elephant" in a jewelry category is more likely to trigger screening there than in areas such as children's books or stuffed animals.
OP4 months agofiled the appeal, and they completely removed the entire listing...going to relist, make another listing with different wording...
·4 months agoWhat is wrong with amber? It has nothing to do with animals. It seems to me that the trigger word is elephant. "Products made from elephants can't be sold on eBay."
It also seems pretty obvious that the appeal process is pointless. I doubt very much that any human was involved in the appeal. It is so absolutely ridiculous.
dm772012
OP4 months agoSee the word elephant in listings a lot...no different than listing an item that has dog in the listing. I didn't write out ivory or real ivory...
stuff4divas
·4 months ago@ccomic nothing 'wrong' with the word 'amber' to me, but who knows what bots/AI think?
i've sold many jewelry items with the word 'elephant', since that's what they were, w/o issue
possible the issue was within the description box or item specifics or just a dumb bot/AI
·4 months agoGood point. It is definitely the biggest weakness of AI. It can do the most incredible things, but it can also make the most spectacularly poor decisions, and apparently lacks any sort of "common sense" filter, like "how can silver ear rings be made out of elephants?"
·4 months agoeBay has used automation to incorrectly remove listings based on keyword and category combinations for decades.
Not all automation is "AI".
·4 months agoAdvice would be is not find another website to list your item on. Ebay has made the decision to remove your listing and there really isn't much you can do about it. If you decide relist this item you risk a suspension.
dm772012
OP4 months agoalmost done with eBay. AI will be the downfall of our globe
OP4 months agoMy earrings were listed for 1 year. I decided to unlist and relisted recently to this insanity of removal of real sterling...not actual animal or animal part.
·4 months agoThis is getting ridiculous. EBay continues to turn over the reins of decision-making to AI, including the appeals process. They are bent on creating a self-governing platform that requires very little or no human interaction. What a shame.
·4 months agoI agree.
I have been there with listings taken down with artificial intelligence.
And also requesting a feedback revision(s) through eBay...where instead of eBay looking at it...eBay artificial intelligence just sends it to the buyer now.
