Ebay, PLEASE Move The Kron Jobs Along?
Summary: cyberontix expressed frustration over eBay's slow processing of ended listings, which were stuck at 98 out of 200 for nearly half an hour. Other participants speculated on potential causes, including system delays and increased activity. While some offered explanations about eBay's processing dynamics and suggested checking on another device, others noted the need for patience. Eventually, the listings were processed after 40 minutes, with concerns about eBay's infrastructure contributing to delays. The discussion highlighted broader issues with eBay's system reliability.
Really disgusted. I ended 200 listings in order to do Sell Similar in bulk (the algorithm has been burying us for weeks and sales have been non-existent every weekend for the past month, so we do what we gotta do), and it's been stuck at 98 ended listings for nearly a half-hour. So what eBay, did I lose 102 listings? Can we PLEASE move the process along?
This place just gets better and better every minute.

·1 month agoThat's actually indecently long and there's no excuse for it, IMHO. BUT since it's generally no more than maybe a minute for a task like that, I'm wondering if it's instead an updating problem.
Can you check it on another device?

OP1 month agoThanks, they finally showed up after an inexcusable 40 minutes. I think it's more about parallel server striping and whatnot, like I think they're using fewer mainframes/minis and things and going with cheaper clusters and whatnot. This isn't the first time, but it was definitely the worst ever.

·1 month agoWhen eBay had a splashy video about how they're making their own servers now my heart sank.
But usually the updates, even for a couple of hundred listings, are pretty brisk, so hopefully this won't happen too often. A lot is traffic which may be loading up post Labor Day.

OP1 month agoLol I knew the replies would mostly make it about grumbling at me instead of the platform. Don't go changin', folks.

·1 month agoThis is a HUGE site with over 2.5 BILLION active listings at any one time. That is a whole lot of data to track and process. Ebay has never ran in REAL TIME since back in the beginning when it was much smaller. Ebay typically has a flag on this kind of stuff saying it may take up to 24 hours for the changes to post. That has been there for a very long time.
Now usually it happens much faster than that, but just sometimes it takes a few hours before the site is Re-Indexed and all listings for everyone get updated.
With that said, If you close a listing, no one will be able to purchase from it, even if the site has not yet Re-Indexed and is visible in searches. We are protected in that way. Once the buyer clicks into the listing and tries to purchase it, they will find out that it is no longer available.

·1 month ago"...it's been stuck at 98 ended listings for nearly a half-hour."
This is due to an annual increase in system activity experienced during this period, which has caused processing delays.

·1 month agoThis is one of those times when this is actually true.

·1 month agoI'm not sure they use "cron jobs" for this, might be.
But with eBay, there's sometime big delays because of multiple systems communicating between each others. Sometime there might be heavy load / queue.

OP1 month agoThey're definitely running cron jobs. They were before, but there's been an obvious drop in database speed of late. Reliability has dropped too, with more dropped listings and other such bugs.
