ebay overcharged me for shipping
Summary: kal16072 experienced an issue with eBay overcharging for shipping, resulting in a loss of money after sending an item. mr_lincoln and others explained that the discrepancy was likely due to incorrect dimensions and weights used in the listing, emphasizing the responsibility of sellers to ensure accuracy. There were discussions on the financial impact and suggestions for using alternative shipping services like UPS or FedEx in the future. kal16072 acknowledged the mistake and appreciated the explanations, while other participants highlighted the importance of learning from errors in e-commerce.
ebay overcharged me for shipping how do I resolve this and get my money back. The buyer payed for the item and shipping but when I printed ebays shipping label I was charged more than the total sale. This means I literaly lost money. How can I contact an ebay person to resolve this.
for example the buyer payed 95$ total for my item and for shipping. After printing the lable ebay gave me I was charged 110$ meaning I lost both my item and my bank was charged 15$. The bigest problem is I had already dropped my pacage off at the usps store before realizing what I had been charged.
The ebay chatbot is also no help.

I have a couple of comments:
I think I can honestly say that we've all made mistakes as newbies. Ebay isn't as easy as they'd like you to believe. It's not just "photograph, list, sell, ship and rake in the cash." But hopefully, we learn lessons from our mistakes so we don't repeat them.
When you post on a public forum, you're going to hear from different people with different personalities, different posting styles, different cultures and different ways of expressing themselves. You won't always hear what you want to hear but most of the time, you're going to get accurate information and advice.
When you've erred, we (or most of us) aren't going to stroke you and make excuses. We aren't going to coddle you and place blame where it doesn't belong. But just because someone is blunt, to the point and calls you out on your negligence doesn't mean they aren't helping or educating you.
You're way more apt to get accurate advice by posting here as opposed to contacting ebay's offshore contracted customer service reps who read from a script and tell you whatever it'll take to get you off the line quickly.
I'm sorry you lost money on this transaction but if you learn from it so it won't happen again, it'll be an inexpensive education.

·3 weeks agoJust for future reference, using those same measurements, shipping would be about 1/2 the cost if you used UPS or FedEx.

·3 weeks ago@kal16072 Flipper is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful people on these boards. When he says something, you need to at least pay attention, but whether you want to use his advice is up to you. No reason to be snarky.
kal16072
OP3 weeks agoI'm sure he is. I didn't mean to be "snarky" either, just being blunt. My point was he gave no new information or advice. Clearly others have commented and explained what went wrong on the board, which is exactly what I was looking for when I posted here. His comment, after others had explained, seemed a little.. pointless.

OP3 weeks agoit was the trim molding. My reciet from the post office says the package weighed 4lb, I didnt even measure the box but it was probabley around 55x10x10. I didnt even look when I printed the label how much the charge was because I was in a rush to get it to the post office, thats my bad. So I wonder was my box diferent than what the shipping label covered so the post office adjusted the cost after the fact? The buyer payed 61.18 for shipping, I payed $101.86 so after everything else im out 7$. I might have to eat it. I definitely learned my lesson on this one.

·3 weeks ago@kal16072 Yup. Those dimensions and weight are about right for a USPS label costing around $100. Were those the dimensions and weight the exact same as you entered into the listing? It kind of sounds that the listing may have had data entered that corresponded to the item but not to the box.
When people get into sizes of boxes (especially 1 dimension over 48 inches) they will run into what is called, dimensional weight, in which case the actual weight of the package is somewhat irrelevant.

OP3 weeks agothanks for explaining

·3 weeks agoIf it is that trim molding, it is likely the dimensions that caused the extra charge - check your other oversized items NOW and adjust your packed dimensions and weight

·3 weeks agoTo answer your question on how to resolve this with ebay. You probably are not going to get the resolution you want. Given how ebay labeling works it is most likely you made an error someplace along the line.

·3 weeks agoWe need more information to determine what is going one. How much did the package weigh? What were the dimensions of the package? How much did you charge for shipping in the listing.
When you print a label on ebay it clearly shows what the charge is. How did you miss that?

First lets start with the fact that eBay has nothing to do with the final weight and size that a Seller puts on their listing. It is the Seller's responsibility to make sure it is right. Sure, eBay might have a suggested size and weight but my experience in seeing their suggestions is that they are clueless in most cases.
Ship the item and take the loss or message the Buyer and explain your mistake and ask if they would be kind enough to ask for a cancellation so you can Relist the item and correct your shipping error. They do not have to agree, they probably think they got a really good deal on the Ford Escape rear tailgate trim. I checked the sold item, there is not a single dimension on the listing but I suspect it is over 48" long. That length has surcharges. I see just over $ 61 to ship from your state to PA ... I don't think that could happen to be honest. If the Buyer agrees you can cancel the transaction using the reason "Buyer requested" and avoid a strike on your account. If you just outright cancel you will have to use the reason "Out of stock" and get a strike on your account plus risk Negative Feedback from your customer.

·3 weeks ago@mr_lincoln Note that the OP said the package was already shipped and dropped off with UPS. So no need to contact buyer and ask for a cancelation.
