eBay just stole $481 dollars from me!
I listed an expensive radio for sale. I allowed EBay to auto fill the title, and it was mistakenly listed it as aGarmin 430W…..instead of what it was…just a Garmin 430.
It sold quickly for $3500. I am new to selling and said yes to that auto-label address thing for shipping.
I packed up the radio but when I saw the guys address, it also said “430W†in the item description.
I contacted him immediately, he said he didn’t want it so I cancelled the sale.
I never saw any money at all! eBay just charged my bank account $481 dollars!
What the hell is that? Who do I contact to get it back?

·2 years agoA couple of notes. First as others suggested need to know what reason you used when you canceled the order. Second you are a new/infrequent seller and are listing a high dollar item, you do not accept returns and are a potential high value target for scammers.
As a new/infrequent seller if and when the item sells again eBay is probably going to hold your funds for up to 30 days. You need to fully understand the eBay MBG and that not accepting returns does not translate into no refunds.
The item is electronic and probably highly susceptible to shipping damage. When you purchase the shipping label make sure you add additional insurance to cover the full value of the item should it get damaged in transit. Double box and over pack this to an extreme. Not sure what you mean by the "auto-address" label thing. You are shipping this through UPS, not that there is anything wrong with that and for this item it is probably cheaper than USPS. However, you should be aware that UPS is infamous for unilateral surcharges on shipping labels purchased through eBay. I would recommend you use a shipping facilitator like Pirate Ship, which has the same or better discounted shipping rates than eBay and has shipper protection from unilateral surcharges provided the dims and weight of the package were correct when you purchased the label.
If you had purchased the shipping label you need to cancel the label to get refunded for that cost. Always remember the #1 rule as seller on eBay and that is to NEVER list an item you are not prepared to take the financial loss on.

"It was mistakenly listed" is a passive sentence. You mistakenly listed it as a Garmin 430W.

You needed to cancel it as "buyer requested". It sounds like you canceled it for a different reason that did not return your fees.

·2 years agoWhen you canceled the sale did you check the box that "Buyer Requested to Cancel" ? What reason did you give for the cancelation? That would make a big difference as to whether ebay charges you that $481 fee.

·2 years agoI think that is the Ebay fee for the item you sold. Blaming Ebay doesn't seem correct here - I emphasize with you but you are responsible for your listing, even with the stupid autofill. Your job was to make sure the listing you put up was correct. I'm not certain of the exact reqs, but ebay will sometimes keep its fee from a refund.
Sounds like you did the right thing contacting the customer in advance. It would certainly be worth your time to contact ebay - everyone here says you have to do it through twitter or facebook. That is a lot of money to most of us and aperfect example of why we don't want Ebay having access to our bank accounts.
Ebay needs to do a better job with new sellers. It is not a flea market or yard sale, but ebay still pitches itself as such "sell your old stuff" with pictures of happy young people in trendy clothes like it is easy or safe or something.

I absolutely agree. eBay allows these new sellers with NO selling or e commerce sense to list high dollar items, with of course "no returns" and the wolves are out there just looking for listings like this one to snatch up and screw the seller. I thought new sellers were supposed to have limits set, which they should really implement & enforce.
New sellers do not take the time to read up on policies, rules etc and this is the end result. IMO it's a mess.
