Ebay International Shipping - a new Hub + GST

Today I had my 5th international sale for the new EIS program. This time , the buyer is in Australia. I had to ship the box to a hub in Commerce, CA and I also noticed that the buyer had to pay a GST tax. THere was a post last week about a buyer having to pay a tax. Perhaps that tax was the GST. I just wanted to give you folks a heads up since this program is so new.

Any purchases by Australians on eBay.com are subject to GST, been in effect for 3 years or so. The only exception would be items shipped to third-party forwarders in the US.

But the buyers in Canada did not have to pay it and when I visited Canada, I know that they had a GST tax because I recall seeing signs in the stores. I do hope that this program gets popular. Sales really stink this year.

The collection of GST on orders to Canada (except for EIS) don't get charged GST because the Canadian Government does not require it, the Australian government does.

EIS are providing a DDP service to Canada and thus must collect just like the old GSP.

Buyers in Canada pay GST/HST when they order from other Canadian sellers. I'm considered a US seller, so my buyers don't pay HST, but I still have to remit it (and calculate the HST portion of their purchase). I've got a spreadsheet for that.

When I was ordering stuff through GSP, I had to pay "import duties and taxes" along with shipping to Canada, but they did not say it was "GST/HST" on the purchase order, otherwise I might have been able to claim all that money back. (GST/HST registered businesses can claim any GST/HST paid... works out for me buying in Canada and selling to the US... I pay GST/HST and get it back, but don't have to remit much because 90% of my sales are US based).

@ms.rodriguez* Thanks. I believe Griff had mentioned that the Commerce CA shipping hub was coming a while ago on of the ebay for business podcasts....so now we know it is up and running.
