Ebay fees prior to sale?
Hello
I received an email from Ebay saying that they were going to charge me for an auction listing I had that didn't sell. I usually list "Buy It Now" but thought I'd try an auction. Is that a standard thing? The email I received didn't state what the charge was even for. It says "There's and upcoming charge to your bank account for $5.00 that we wanted to let you know about. You'll see this charge after 3 days.
When I click on the link in the email it takes me to the item that I listed as an auction and says "Reserve price listing fee." How can I avoid this in the future? Which types of listings do they charge for prior to a sale?

·1 year agoThe fee for putting a reserve in an auction listing is $5 or 7.5% of the reserve price, whichever one gives eBay more money.

·1 year agoYes @sierra_sky56 , that is a fee you have to pay even if the listing doesn't sell. It does tell you that if you read the screen when you select it.
You might consider not using a reserved price. Not because it cost you money but because buyers really don't like it. If there is a minimum you want for your item, start the auction at that amount.

·1 year agoIt told you on the screen when you were creating the posting, just before you listed it at the bottom of the listing. Ebay doesn't hide fees, but often times sellers don't look before leaping because they assume they know what will happen.

·1 year agoUsing a reserve does cause a fee to be owed, whether the item sells or not. In the future, don’t use a reserve, but start the listing at the lowest price you’re going to be happy with if you only get one bid.

·1 year agoReserves are for suckers if they're selling on eBay; they can be useful in real auction houses, but here not so much. For the rest, what Glorybells said.

·1 year agoI think in the beginning when eBay started, and everything was auctions only and rare collectibles were just beginning to find their way to eBay, reserves had a good purpose. I’m talking about in the 1996 - 2004 years. Before Buy It Now was introduced, and the site became flooded with the previously very hard to find items. eBay has evolved drastically over the 26 years I’ve been here, and in the modern version of eBay, you’re right, @evelyb30 , they have little to no use, except maybe in extremely rare situations.

·1 year agoClarification: To sellers, they have little to no use. But to ebay, they're a money-maker! Why eliminate something that makes money for them whether an item sells or not?!

Easy. Stop putting a "Reserve Price" on your auction listings.

·1 year agoYou are charged for a reserve whether it sells or not. So if you want to do auctions make sure you do not have a reserve.
